| | Adam Lambert For Your Entertainment CD (2009)
Multiple Offenses songs
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American ...

| | Cliff Richard Sings The Standards CD (2003)
Multiple Offenses album
$13.59 Cliff Richard's SINGS THE STANDARDS collects together recordings of vocal classics from the 1930s through 1970s performed by the UK rock 'n' roller. The set includes Richard's interpretations of everything from jazz ("Twelfth Of Never") to bossa nova ("Girl From Ipanema") to soul ("You Keep Me Hangin' On").
Listening to Sings the Standards, it's hard to imagine that Cliff Richard was ever considered an Elvis-styled rebel. After the success of 1959's Cliff Sings, more and more ballads geared toward an easygoing audience started to appear. With 40 albums released during the '60s, they had to padded with filler, usually less than inspired readings of well-recognized songs with overly dramatic backing. Quite a bit of it ends up here, stripped of rock & roll and with orchestras taking the place of the Shadows. This doesn't mean there's not some fun to be had. "Fly Me to the Moon" goes from a schmaltzy bossa nova into a Tom Jones-styled robust swing session. "Save the Last Dance for Me" has a smooth hip sway about it and the robotic female background vocals turn the camp way up. "Blowin' in the Wind" is just plain wild with the sensibilities of Bob Dylan, Johnnie Ray, Herb Alpert, and Mitch Miller all coming together at once. Amidst ...

| | Yoshida Tatsuya Vrresto CD (1998)
Multiple Offenses songs
$5.99 Drummer and leader Tatsuya Yoshida shares writing credits with his bassist, Hisashi Sasaki, on about half the tunes on Ruins' fifth LP of new material, though you'd be hard-pressed to notice a huge difference. In general, their sound is less harsh than on earlier albums, though they have remained one of the most consistently spastic bands in rock history. Vrresto expands on the budding improvisational tendencies of 1995's Hydermomastgroningem, though occasionally at the expense of maintaining the kinetic momentum of the songs. In some ways, this record represents Ruins' transition from punky progressive rock addicts into brawny representatives of the avant-garde. That ...
