| | Cheap Trick Greatest Hits CD Cheap Trick Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
This is sort of a "greatest hits" package since Cheap Trick has scads more great songs that could easily have made the cut. But if you have to narrow it down to 13 tracks, there's nary a dud in the bunch here (even the much maligned power ballad "The Flame" works in this context). The bottom line is that Cheap Trick's blend of Anglo-influences (Beatles, Move, Who) and American attitude made them one of the most inventive rock bands ever, and in Robin Zander they possessed perhaps the genre's most criminally underrated singer--essentially he's Robert Plant with subtlety and minus the macho posturing. Overlooked gem: a cover of "Magical Mystery Tour" which appends the psychedelic coda the song always deserved (complete with a brief sample from "I Am the Walrus").
The greatest failing of Greatest Hits is the fact that much of Cheap Trick's best material didn't come near the charts. "I Want You to Want Me," "Surrender," and "Dream Police" either climbed the charts or scraped them, as did the fine singles "Ain't That a Shame," "Voices," "If You Want My Love," and "She's Tight," but many of their stone-cold classics -- including "He's a Whore," "Oh, Candy," "Downed," "Southern Girls," "Auf Wiedersehen" -- weren't successes. What were successes were pleasant arena rockers and power ballads like "Tonight It's You," "The Flame," and "Don't Be Cruel," and that's what forms the basis of Greatest Hits, along with an extraneous new rendition of the Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour." Casual fans who only want the hits will be satiated by this collection, but the album misses the point of Cheap Trick, and thereby doesn't work as either an introduction or retrospective. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Despite the fact that much of Cheap Trick's best material didn't come near the charts -- many of their greatest songs, including "He's a Whore," "Oh, Candy," "Downed," "Southern Girls," and "Auf Wiedersehen" were never singles -- the Greatest Hits compilation remains a good sampler since it contains such classics as "I Want You to Want Me," "Surrender," "Dream Police," "Ain't That a Shame," "Voices," "If You Want My Love," and "She's Tight," along with pleasant latter-day arena rockers and power ballads like "Tonight It's You," "The Flame," and "Don't Be Cruel." Even if it misses many great songs, the compilation will satisfy casual fans who only want the hits. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Greatest Hits album
$8.69 In 1978, Pasadena's Van Halen released its debut album and shook the rock world to its foundations. VAN HALEN, featuring the fiery fretwork of Eddie Van Halen, and the talented howling of David Lee Roth, gave a kick-start to the moribund heavy rock genre. As Kiss turned disco and Black Sabbath sank in a morass of drugs and alcohol, Van Halen adopted a blues base, added a metal sheen, and created a sound that remains influential today.
Michael Anthony's thumping bass line, followed by Alex Van Halen's hi-hat and Eddie ...
| | John Fogerty Centerfield CD (1985) Remastered
Greatest Hits CD music
$6.49 "Put me in coach, I'm ready to play." These are lines familiar to any baseball fan, for John Fogerty's "Centerfield" has become the unofficial song of our national pastime. Those lines also signaled Fogerty's return to the music business after a ten-year absence. The music is mighty familiar, as Fogerty works the same terrain he mined for gold with Creedence Clearwater Revival from 1968-1972. The riff of the opening track, "The Old Man Down the Road," sounds so much like the Creedence hit "Run Through the Jungle" that Fogerty was sued by his former record company for plagiarizing himself. (He won the suit, the court upholding a composer's right to sound like himself.) "Old Man" was a Top Ten single, and this album reached number one itself. "Big Train (From Memphis)" is a rockabilly salute to Elvis, while "I Saw It on TV" takes us on a trip through the '50s and '60s "from Hooter to Doodyville," via the boob tube. "Searchlight" recalls "Keep On Chooglin" and the other extended one-chord jams of the Creedence days. Fogerty also lashes out at his old nemesis Saul Zaentz, head of that ...
| | Who Ultimate Collection CDs (2002) Remastered
Greatest Hits music CDs
$15.09 Initial pressings of THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION included a limited edition bonus disc featuring four previously unreleased tracks.
Recorded between November 1964 and June 1982. Includes liner notes by Matt Kent and Andy Neill.
When it comes to a ground-breaking, iconic band like the Who, dubbing an anthology THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION is no small claim. The kicker here is that it happens to be the truth. Without venturing into the realm of the box set, there's never been such a definitive batch of Who tunes all under one roof before. Virtually all the bases are covered here, from such attitude-laden mid-'60s mod anthems as "My Generation" and "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" to the conceptual expansiveness of TOMMY-era tunes ...
| | Very Best Of The Eagles CDs (1994) Remastered; Digipak
Greatest Hits songs
$21.29 THE VERY BEST OF includes a 46-page booklet with pictures and track information.
"Hole In The World" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
This 1994 greatest hits package (released in anticipation of the band's wildly successful reunion tour and album) supplants THEIR GREATEST HITS 1971-1975. It adds seven songs, but unfortunately deletes "Already Gone," one of their best rockers.
What's most interesting about THE VERY BEST OF THE EAGLES - apart from the presence of obviously classic songs like "Take It Easy" and "Hotel California" - is that it demonstrates that the band's esthetic was fully formed from day one. Despite the fact that the songs here span nearly a decade, listening to them back to back you could almost believe they were the product of one marathon recording session.
The Eagles' founders Don Henley and Glenn Frey were forthright in their desire to bring then-emerging country rock to new heights of commercial success. Formed in Los Angeles in 1971, they learned from their observations of the scene around them, and subsequently took their music to the top of the charts. They stayed there throughout the '70s, becoming synonymous with the sound of Southern California rock.
The band's first ...

$14.79 Black Sabbath had put itself back on track both musically and commercially with the 1980 album HEAVEN AND HELL, as the addition of new vocalist Ronnie James Dio was the shot in the arm Sabbath needed. A follow-up was released one year later, MOB RULES, which follows in the same mega-decibel approach as its predecessor. While it is still a vast improvement ...
