Change Your Mind' CD music
$12.69 Since the turn of the decade, organ combos have made a bit of a comeback. So, maybe the time has come for the Java Men, a group hailing out of Louisville, Kentucky. But, they are an organ combo with a difference. Rather than aping the groovin'-on-a-hot-summer-night sweaty prototype, they play a breezy, energetic variant on it. Todd Hildreth ...
| | Michele Rosewoman In Side Out CD (2006)
Change Your Mind' music CDs
$17.75 In her liner notes, Michele Rosewoman says that she has a passion for "obscuring the obvious." The music on The In Side Out is never close to obvious, evolving constantly without ever becoming overly comfortable. Some selections use complex time signatures while others have a floating feel to them. There is a vocal folkloric piece, some freer stretches that end up not being as free as they sound, and plenty of dynamic solos along the way. Tenor saxophonist Mark Shim and altoist Miguel Zenón solo brilliantly throughout but one should never overlook the alert and unpredictable playing of bassist Brad Jones and drummer Derrek Phillips. As for Michele Rosewoman, her occasional work on electric piano is intriguing, as is her admitted love of funk and R&B. There is also a liberal amount of her distinctive acoustic piano work, improvising within her own mysterious structures. Rosewoman's music is highly original, never going to predictable places even when it is funky, and it reveals more layers and surprises with each listen. ~ Scott Yanow
MICHELE ROSEWOMAN BIOPianist/Composer/EducatorWith the October 3, 2006 release of The In Side Out (Advance Dance Disques AD 0353) -- Michele Rosewoman’s first new recording since 2000 and the fifth featuring her ensemble Quintessence – the acclaimed pianist once again makes a powerful creative statement that showcases the breadth and depth or her musicality and affirms in no uncertain terms her position as one of the most original and innovative instrumentalists and composers on the current global jazz scene. Ms. Rosewoman is heard here with a core ensemble featuring the powerful front line of saxophonists Mark Shim and Miguel Zenon augmented by special guests Dave Fiuczynski on guitar, Josh Roseman on trombone and Pedro Martinez on percussion. Self-produced, The In Side Out is undoubtedly Rosewoman’s most multi-faceted recording to date, morphing from acoustic modern jazz to sophisticated funk to dynamic electric fusion to ecstatic Afro Cuban jazz. As on her previous recordings for Soul Note, Enja, Evidence, Toshiba/EMI and Blue Note, Rosewoman expands jazz’s horizons while remaining firmly rooted in the music’s illustrious tradition. In fact, the new release represents the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the 20-year history of this highly acclaimed ensemble. Ms. Rosewoman was born in Oakland, CA where ...

| | Judi Silvano Riding A Zephyr CD (2003)
Change Your Mind' album
$12.69 Judi SilvanoVocalist, Composer, LyricistOriginally from Philadelphia, where she studied flute, piano, ballet and modern dance before attending Temple University on a vocal scholarship, Judi Silvano moved to New York in 1976 and earned a reputation as an improviser, first as a dancer and later as a jazz vocalist. She has collaborated with such jazz artists as Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Gerry Hemingway, Bill Frisell, has sung with Gunther Schuller and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Manny Albam and Robert Shaw in addition to leading her own ensembles since 1990. Voted three times as one of the Top 10 Female Vocalists in the Down Beat Reader's Poll, Silvano has earned wide acclaim for her talents as a vocalist, composer and lyricist. "Not only is she an excellent singer, but she also composes. Judi Silvano details the lyrics of her songs in a clear fashion that reveals the songs' romantic side, without falling into false elegance or affectation. Ellington would have loved her, that's for sure." (Michel Bedin, Jazz Hot Magazine, France) "Silvano stands out for her upbeat spirit, the pure range of her imagination, and her ability to generate excitement. Silvano is an artist, painting with the broadest brush, creating colorful harmonies and textures, and evoking the best performances from her accompanying musicians." (Jazz & Blues Report) Her original compositions can be heard on her four CDs as a leader: Dancing Voices (JSL Records, 1992), Vocalise (Blue Note Records, 1997), Songs I Wrote Or Wish I Did (JSL Records, 2000), and Riding A Zephyr, her duo album with pianist Mal Waldron (Soul Note/Black Saint Records, 2002.) What the reviews are saying: "On Riding a Zephyr, Silvano and Waldron wrap around each other with ease and fluidity, blending their instruments in a manner that makes the session feel like the meeting of two old friends." (Jason Koransky, DownBeat Magazine) "Waldron creates textures bathed in deep emotional beauty, setting the mood for Silvano who wraps herself round it for a stunning piece of work. Silvano has a pliable voice, the timbre deep and warm. On "Finding My Love" she builds the atmosphere convincingly, making loneliness a wrenching experience." (Jerry D'Souza, AAJ) "Throughout Riding A Zephyr, Waldron lays down his distinctive rumbling bass chords with his left hand and doesn't play more than is needed with his right. Silvano's singing is a good match; for she aims for the heart of a song and hits her target. (Alan Lankin, JazzMaTazz) "Riding A Zephyr ...
