There are few soneros out there who can claim the same level of pedigree that produced Yumuri. Born Moisés Valle, alongside brothers Orlando (Maraca) and Luis, one can only imagine how musical that house must have been. He met the salsa world head on in 1984 when he joined the very popular Elio Revé Orquesta (which, incidentally, gave him the name Yumuri), affording him the opportunity to share the stage with such vocal greats as Cheo Feliciano, Rubén Blades, Ismael Miranda, and Tito Nieves. Known especially for his amazing range, comfort in the upper registers, and improvisational ability, it was not long before Yumuri split from Revé to pursue a solo career, backed by his famous brothers. Though his 2002 release Tiene Bilongo does not feature both of the other fabulous Valles (Maraca does appear on the record), there's plenty of talent to go around. The record draws from Cuba's next-generation players, and was recorded for the island's premier record label, Ahi Nama. Yumuri still maintains a strong fan base in Cuba and around the world, and it's no surprise, after hearing his clear-as-a-bell voice and diesel-powered band. Yumuri's new album was produced by his famous and talented brother Maraca, and he pumps this CD up with more Latin swing than ever - it's very commercial salsa with a Cuban edge. Yumuri toured as the singer of Cubanismo on their first tour of the U.S.

CHICAGO has a long and varied history; it began life in the '20s as a play about a showgirl named Roxie Hart, the character whose name was used as the title for a '40s movie inspired by the show. In the '70s, Broadway composers Kander and Ebb (CABARET, NEW YORK, NEW YORK) wrote the songs for a musical version focusing on the '20s-jazz angle and capitalizing on the murder-and-sex theme, and Bob Fosse fleshed the whole thing out to great success. The late-'90s Broadway revival of the show was even more successful and gave rise to a film version featuring Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, movie stars not known for singing.
The film turned out to be a huge hit, and the actors handle their vocal chores admirably, as borne out on this soundtrack disc

For a band who only released three albums in their lifetime, the Stooges left behind a whole lot of scraps, wreckage, and unfinished business. There are literally dozens of discs which have emerged in the years since the band's inglorious collapse which document live shows, rehearsals, studio outtakes, alternate mixes, and various other Stooges audio fragments, and the really remarkable part is nearly all of it stems from the James Williamson era of the band, 1972 through 1974, when the band recorded the Raw Power album before eventually lurching to a halt.
