Adhering more to a classic Euro-metal style than many of their peers, Kamelot's Siege Perilous nevertheless captures the mournful, epic feel of much '90s Scandinavian metal. ~ Steve Huey
Kamelot includes: Roy Kahn (vocals); Casey Grillo (drums).

Kamelot Siege Perilous Songs Siege Perilous Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Not as strong, but still good The songwriting and production are not as good as future releases but it has some good music on it! khan's work doesn't show here It's true that ever since Khan joined the band, Kamelot improve with every new record they make. I can almost say that most of their songs are from good to excellent. But not on this record. I think Khan's influence doesn't show on this album. Of course Youngblood's performance is excellent and there are some great ideas in there. But the songs are not as good. Just listen to Epica and then to this one. There are million miles apart songwise! The cd still has nice moments but it's not enough. If you want to enter the world of Kamelot, start with The fourth dimension and after Submitted by iivorian (cyprus) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
With Roy Kahn singing, you cannot go wrong. I believe this is the first cd with Roy Kahn (of Conception fame) as the vocalist. I love Kamelot, but I will try and be honest. The production on this cd, I believe is a bit weak most noticeably in the vocal area as they seem to be a bit buried. Lyrically not as well done as "Epica" or "Karma". Instrumentally the CD is very strong, Thomas Youngblood is a very underrated guitarist, his rhythms and riffs are excellent and his leadwork is comparable to most other metal guitarists. The rhythm section is solid if not spectacular. Khans voice is excellent. Beautiful, emotional, are two words that come to mind. If you are looking for Grrr or operatic look elsewhere. In all honesty I would subtract a 1/4 star. The mix and lyrically not quite 4 star material. If you love power or prog metal you will enjoy this CD. | | Mr Big Big, Bigger, Biggest! The Best Of Mr. Big CD (1996)
Siege Perilous music CDs
$10.49 This compilation of the pop metal band's hits includes "To Be With You" and "Nothing But Love."
When it came to classification, Mr. Big always posed a bit of a problem. On the one hand, the band had a big-league virtuoso lead guitarist (Paul Gilbert) who just loved to shred and a hotshot bass player (Billy Sheehan) who regularly topped guitar magazine polls. On the other, all of Mr. Big's hits were sappy (if tuneful) AC-lite through and through, thanks in large part to the mainstream pop sensibilities of lead vocalist Eric Martin. Big, Bigger, Biggest! captures this dichotomy fairly well. Songs like "Colorado Bulldog" and "The Electric Drill Song" are showcases for Sheehan and Gilbert to unleash their chops in a fierce flurry of notes, whereas "Be With You" and the cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World" are pure ballad heaven. On occasion, like on "Take Cover" and "Green Tinted Sixties Mind," both impulses come together in something approximating harmony. And the three new tracks are not half bad either. The question never has been whether Mr. Big has the musical talent to play like Van Halen -- the band does (and on tracks like "Stay Together," one of the previously unreleased songs, the resemblance is uncanny). The pity is that the group hasn't been able to consistently match its playing talent with as strong a ...

$9.69 Arguably, the Scandinavian countries have become to the death metal/black metal field what Chicago is to the blues -- not the place that gave birth to the genre, but definitely the place that came to dominate it. While death metal/black metal didn't get started in Scandinavia any more than the blues were invented in Chicago, the list of important death metal and black metal bands that have come from Sweden, Norway, or Denmark is endless. That said, one can give props to the Nordic countries without neglecting what the rest of Western Europe has to offer -- and in the Netherlands, one of the more noteworthy death metal/black metal bands of the '90s and 2000s has been God Dethroned. Lair of the White Worm doesn't break any new ground for the Dutch moshers, but it's a respectable, ...

$17.09 Privately pressed on the Brown label in 1973 in a limited edition of 250 copies, this English folk album was incredibly scarce before its 2006 CD reissue. Though that CD reissue appeared on a label, Radioactive, that usually targets rock collectors, this isn't a folk-rock record, though it has some of the elements of the more traditional wing of early-'70s British folk-rock. Instead, it's kind of like hearing a band such as Steeleye Span, but without any rock influences. The stern yet moving vocal harmonies are there, often in the male-female vocal blend typical of both folk-rock and traditional groups indebted to the U.K. folk tradition. The instrumentation is based around acoustic guitar and fiddle, the singing is sometimes a cappella, and the material is very traditional in nature. Unfortunately, the packaging on both the original LP and the CD reissue (assuming the CD reissue simply reproduces the original artwork) makes it not only impossible to ascertain if all the songs are traditional in origin, but doesn't even list the titles of the individual tracks. If you're willing to put up a certain level of mystery, however, it's a nicely done traditional folk album, though with the slightly ragged feel ...

$27.25 Although they may not go by the Savatage moniker, Jon Oliva's Pain reflects the aforementioned band's knack for anthemic metal with a heavy progressive edge. Also, comparisons to Savatage are inevitable when you have the group's longest-tenured singer, Jon Oliva, at the helm. Their third full-length overall, 2006's Maniacal Renderings, ...
