Frank Sinatra's studio recordings have been collected in comprehensive box sets issued by the various record labels for which he recorded (RCA Victor [when he was a singer in Tommy Dorsey's orchestra], Columbia, Capitol, and Reprise) and there have also been multi-disc collections of his V-Disc recordings and radio shows. That leaves his work in television and film, a more challenging prospect for compilation (at least, legally) since so many different companies are involved. Yet Reprise has managed to do the job here for the singer's movie performances, gathering together soundtrack recordings made for films released by Paramount, MGM, Columbia, RKO, Universal, Warner Bros., United Artists, and 20th Century Fox between 1940 and 1964. The chronological sequencing provides a portrait of Sinatra's musical development that parallels his studio recordings during the same period. He first turned up on screen in the Dorsey band in Las Vegas Nights, released in 1941, not acting, but merely singing the previous year's breakthrough hit "I'll Never Smile Again," albeit under a dialogue scene by the film's principals. After he went solo, he began making tentative appearances in films like Higher and Higher that traded on his bobbysoxer appeal. With 1945's Anchors Aweigh, he graduated to big-budget movie musical stardom at MGM, but by the end of the decade was making forgettable pictures for RKO. At the end of the third disc, one begins to hear the mature Sinatra, singing standards in his familiar '50s style, emerge in the tracks from 1951's Meet Danny Wilson, and the rest of the '50s are triumphant, with the Rat Pack movies of the early '60s providing a coda. The seven-hour, six-disc set is more than complete, containing outtakes and promotional spots in addition to the actual soundtrack recordings for a box packed with material Sinatra fans will eat up. ~ William Ruhlmann
Contains 6 CDs with cinematic performances, promos and interviews 'The Voice' sang in nearly 50 different films, newsreels and radio/TV spots released by Paramount, RKO, MGM, Columbia, Hearst, Warner Bros., Universal, United Artists, UA/Capitol and Goldwyn from 1940 to 1964. Virtually every track available on CD for the first time. Rarities include a 1948 radio interview for MGM's The Kissing Bandit and Take Me Out To The Ballgame and a 1951 promo spot for Universal's Meet Danny Wilson. Packaged in a beautiful fabric-lined 5 1/2 w x 11 5/8 h x 1 7/8 box, contains a 120 page perfect bound deluxe book with a preface by Leonard Matlin, and liner notes by Sinatra historians and musician Michael Feinstein. | Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The gap in the Sinatra library has been filled. This Hollywood box set has been rumored for years and finally it's here. Obviously it's not designed for the casual Frank fan. For the rest of us it's an absolute must! Chuck Granata and company have done an excellent job of hunting down Frank's complete work from the movies. Depending on the sound sources the audio quality varies, but there's enough rare material to make the set well worth the price. To hear Sinatra in true stereo from 1944 is definately an ear opener! Chuck's comments in the book that comes with it make also worth the cost. He even talks about some of the recordings they couldn't find. I am told this will be an ongoing search, but for now this set will definately entertain and inform you about probably the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. Absolutely Fantastic! This is the greatest collection of Mr. Sinatra's movie career songs, with many never having been recorded. Some, however, are repeated, but too much of Mr.Sinatra is never enough! A must for the Sinatra adict, and the book along w/it is teriffic. It's complete movie history, all concise in story and song. The packaging is elegant as well! Purchase it now! Submitted by a reviewer (Marthasville MO 63357) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Missing Sinatra Link All of Sinatra's studio and the bulk of his live performances have been released. Everything except for his unique recording he made for film. Often, Sinatra would change his interpretations of his familiar songs. This set is designed for the collector of Sinatra's music, or a collector of film music. There are some incredibly rare items on this set, some are fabulous, others sub par, but all combine for a fascinating study. More important, is the top notch remastering of the vintage material, some have been remixed in stereo. The liner notes are top notch and reveal some interesting and surprising facts about Hollywood and music making. If you are a collector of Sinatra's music, this set is essential. Interesting, but ... For a Sinatra completist like me, this attractive box set is a must. But for the non-compulsive Sinatra fan, any other Capitol or Reprise box set would probably be a better choice. "Sinatra in Hollywood" contains songs from his movies, snippets of dialogue, excerpts from trailers and other promotional material. Out of the context of the movies they are in, not all the songs are that good, and the other stuff is interesting to hear ... once. Time magazine called this set "Sinatra's pocket lint." While I wouldn't go that far, I see the point. His songs, sung a certain way for the movies, can't compare with his studio recordings, and just about all of them have already been released. On the other hand, even at his most mediocre, Sinatra is better than most singers at their best. Submitted by a reviewer (Danvers, Mass.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
hard to find songs finally on CD Beware, the first three CD's do have bad sound. Lots of crackling noises and recorded in mono. The gems are the CD's with songs recorded after 1950.
The price is pretty steep but if you're a Sinatra fan you might consider buying this collection because it contains hard to find songs.
I would have preferred the newsreels and radio spots to be at a seperate CD or at least at the end of a CD. Now the are scattered through the "normal" songs. But nobody asked me....so this is the only place available for me to complain.
