Star One is the latest project from Arjen Anthony Lucassen (the man who almost single-handedly is Aryeon). Lucassen seems to like to assemble groups of musicians to record his works under various band names. Such is the case with this project. The group here has cut loose with their first project, entitled Space Metal. With a title like that, one might expect to hear a more hard-edged version of the space rock sounds of bands like Hawkwind. That is not, however, the case. Instead, Lucassen and his cohorts (Ed Warby, Sir Russel Allen, Damian Wilson, Dan Swano, Floor Jansen, and various guests) make music that is more like a cross between Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Deep Purple. Of course, the neo-symphonic modes for which Lucassen seems to have such a fondness also appear. The result is an intriguing combo that seems a bit contrived and sterile at times, but certainly should please fans of the prog metal genre. ~ Gary Hill

| Space Metal Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews New Age Prog music !!!!! Wow this music is absoulutly fantastic for a new age/progressive rock fan.... This is as good as it gets for a true prog music lover. IT is outstanding in terms of guitar riffs in corporation with an element of trance. This music creates a dreamlike imagery that makes the world just drift by. UNBELIEVABLE just listen to it and make up your own mind... one thing is for certain though this band is on to bigger things than just worldwide poularity. $$$$!!!!! Interesting Music, Mixed Bag Vocals As always, Arjen and his selected crew of musicians are creative, distinctive and very tight. Great progressive metal instrumentation, as you would expect from A.A. If you like Ayreon, you will like this...there is no real difference in style. Only issue I have here is with the majority of vocals which are sung in the traditional higher pitched "heavy metal" voices, sometimes backed with a small choir of female vocalists in harmony but with a discordant component. Gets bothersome to me, others may like it. Definitely give this a try if you like progressive or heavy metal. You'll enjoy the creativity and talent of Arjen. Quite A Surprise... I was told to check out anything by Arjen, and Star One turned out to be a great starting point. As a metalhead brought up on everything from Dio to Grip Inc. to Dream Theater, I can truthfull say that "Space Metal" can be included in the upper-echelon of metal concept albums. Everything is simply amazing; even the songs that can be considered so-so (compared to the rest, that is) are still better than any mainstream metal you can find. This is one CD that you can buy without hearing a single song and still love. Submitted by Patrick (Dry Fork, Virginia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$15.05 Symphony X is certainly an anomaly: an '80s-style fantasy metal band who came along in 1994 (after Nirvana and Pearl Jam's success had seriously rearranged the rock landscape) and ended up acquiring a loyal Gen-X following (especially in Europe). In the '90s and 2000s -- a time when other young headbanger ...

| | Great White Recover CDs (2002) Deluxe Edition
Space Metal
$10.79 Seemingly since the dawn of time, countless veteran rock artists have issued an album's worth of cover songs at some point during their career. And in 1989, everyone's favorite Zep influenced hair metallists, Great White (who at that point were at the peak of their popularity), laid down an album's worth of cover tunes. Instead of trying to immediately cash in on the success of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," these recordings were shelved -- until 2007, with the release of the double-disc, 25-track, "Deluxe Edition" set Recover. As with the vast majority of these all-covers sets, only the most diehard of Great White fans will need to hear the group "rock" out to lightweight readings of the Cult's "Love Removal Machine," AC/DC's "Sin City," or a bluesy -- and two-thirds acoustic -- Rolling Stones medley (which includes "Bitch," "It's Only Rock and Roll," and "Women"). The second disc includes new recordings of such Great White favorites as the aforementioned "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and "Rock Me," as well as a reading of Van Halen's "Unchained," which sees Great White singer Jack Russell do battle with Dweezil Zappa. The inclusion of five (!)Zep covers that close the set will only confirm the claim that Great White was a Led Zep clone once and for all. Great White fanatics will appreciate Recover. Everyone else should stick with the far superior original versions. ~ Greg Prato
