Chisel album
$19.10 NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). Sidling up nicely next to these heartfelt interpretations are some of Stewart's finest original songs. Teaming with spiritual brother Ron Wood, Stewart offers up the cheeky "Italian Girls" and "True Blue," a track that goes along at a mid-tempo clip before exploding into a heartfelt rave-up.
Most notable is a collaboration with Martin Quittenton on "You Wear It Well," an irresistible addition to the Stewart canon. Although the Sam Cooke cover is the one spot where the soulful Scot would be expected to indulge his R&B jones, Etta James's "I'd Rather Go Blind" is where Rod brings it all back home with a slow-burning vocal that ...
| | Sting If On A Winter's Night... CDs (2009) Digipak
Chisel CD music
$14.19 It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which isn't necessarily such a bad thing: the austerity is genuine, not affected, and the cerebral nature of the album is fascinating, albeit mildly so, as this is as sleepy as it is thoughtful. And it's that thoughtfulness that ...
| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
Chisel music CDs
$13.84 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his Island albums too. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings of "Lucky Day" and "I'll Shoot the Moon" from 1993's Black Rider, and a killer -- though equally revamped -- version of "Singapore" from 1985's Rain Dogs. Musically, the performances are flawless, as is the sound on this set. The killer stage band includes Vincent Henry on woodwinds and harmonica, guitarist Omar Torres, Patrick Warren on piano and keyboards, Casey Waits on drums/percussion, and Seth Ford Young on bass. There is also a guest appearance by Sullivan Waits on sax and clarinet; Tom ...

| | Daughtry Leave This Town CD (2009)
Chisel album
$15.45 When he was recording his debut album in 2006, Chris Daughtry didn't have the time to assemble the real rock band he so desperately wanted to have, so it appeared under the band name Daughtry without featuring any of the musicians who later became part of the group. That's not the case with LEAVE THIS TOWN, Daughtry's second record: all five members are glowering on the album cover, floating like specters over an abandoned Californian street. The five rockers serve as visual evidence that Daughtry is a band, not a person, and such reminders may be necessary because LEAVE THIS TOWN doesn't differ much in feel or form from DAUGHTRY. Overall, LEAVE THIS TOWN isn't quite as studio slick as DAUGHTRY, which was fueled by Chris Daughtry's desire prove that he belonged in the big leagues; here, he's achieved that goal and he's happy to stay there as long as possible, giving the people what they want in the form of furrow-browed rockers and brooding power ballads, all saved from their self-conscious sobriety by arena-level hooks, hooks that come from Daughtry and a variety of co-writers including Ben Moody and Nickelback's Chad Kroeger. Daughtry brings these big hooks down to human scale, injecting warmth into his phrasing. Daughtry the band has no desire to make anything other than good, basic, black-and-white modern rock and they do so efficiently on LEAVE THIS TOWN, a sophomore album that's every ...

For hardcore Bobby Darin fans, the four-disc AS LONG AS I'M SINGING box set provides the ultimate career summary. For some artists with discographies of the same length, such a box might be overkill, but Darin was such an eclectic, mercurial singer/songwriter that it truly takes four discs to accurately document all of his stylistic shifts. The first disc concentrates on his pop/rock & roll period, which began in the 1950s and found him turning out such frothy, up-tempo hits as "Splish Splash" and "Dream Lover." Disc Two covers his transition into Sinatra-style swing material, a mode that was deeply unfashionable by the '60s, but was nevertheless embraced and successfully perpetuated by Darin with the likes of "Beyond the Sea" and "Mack the Knife." By the time the fourth disc rolls around, we're presented with Darin the folk-rock artist, delivering both effective interpretations of songs by kindred spirit Tim Hardin and credible self-penned introspective tunes in a similar vein. AS LONG AS I'M SINGING does a stellar job of navigating the disparate phases of Darin's work, focusing on the energy and creativity that made the man a star.
Compilation producers: Jeff Bleiel, Nik Venet, James Austin.
Engineers include: Tom Dowd, Nik Venet (disc 4, track 26).

| | Quicksilver Messenger Service Happy Trails CD (1969) (Import) Germany; Remastered
Chisel songs
$15.75 If the quintessential San Francisco Sound is defined by lengthy improvised guitarwork and near-telepathic interplay, then HAPPY TRAILS crystallizes the genre on record. Extemporizing mightily two Bo Diddley songs ("Who Do You Love" and "Mona," the quartet introduces new realms of expression to rock music. Guitarists John Cipollina and Gary Duncan offer contrasting textures and sound, goading each other to greater heights. Largely recorded live in concert, HAPPY TRAILS encapsulates an era of experimentation, employing images that embodied the outlaw chic of the hippie subculture. Its strengths are not, however, ...

| | Yolanda Adams Day By Day CD (2005)
Chisel CD music
$6.25 With its heavy R&B leanings, DAY BY DAY is easily one of gospel singer Yolanda Adams's most accessible and energetic records. However, this doesn't mean that her messages of praise get lost in the potent pop-tinged production; in fact, Adams is as passionate as ever about her faith, as revealed on the formidable opening track, "Victory," which immediately shines a spotlight on her powerful vocals. Renowned producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis contribute to a trio of tracks here (most notably the buoyant "Lift Him Up," featuring Donnie McClurkin and Mary Mary), while gospel-crossover icon Kirk Franklin oversees two songs (the smooth jam "Tonight" and the Quiet Storm tune "Show Me"). As always, Adams expertly walks the line between secular and Christian music, ensuring that fans will be entertained and uplifted regardless of religious ties.
Personnel: Yolanda Adams (vocals); Donnie McClurkin, Mary Mary (vocals); Gregory Curtis (various ...
| | Front 242 Geography CD (1982) (Import) Import
Chisel music CDs
$36.79 Listening to Geography in the 21st century is a surprising experience in ways; one can tell exactly who's making the music, but things were still incredibly different at the start for Front 242. That said, the edge of the band is fully present, but the sheer amped-up level of brute aggression isn't. As a self-consciously modernist electronic body music act, though, Front 242 made a good debut, with a lot of the familiar elements of the group -- de Meyer's disembodied, passionless voice, Codenys and Daniel B's ears for threatening atmospherics -- in place. The Depeche Mode comparisons are understandable (check out the synth stabs and general pace of "U-Men" for a good example) but not perfectly accurate. Lyrically, Front 242's focus is mostly turned well away from love and religious imagery in favor of cryptic threats, though the THX 1138-sampling "GVDT" is calm and playful enough to imagine David Gahan singing it. A good demonstration of where Front 242 was at can be heard with the first two songs. While "Operating Tracks" adds enough white noise and full percussion slams to indicate the future, "With Your Cries" isn't all that removed from what Kraftwerk had already done. From there the quartet keep bouncing back and forth, sometimes offering up flashes of real inspiration but often indulging in the kind of random noodling that gave early-'80s industrial/dance music something of a bad name. That a number of the tracks are fragmentary instrumentals doesn't help, though they can make for nice enough mood music, and the rough recording quality actually helps in that regard. The 1992 reissue does a great job in pumping up the sound and giving it a fresh edge, while also including three rare tracks. "Ethics" is a nicely murky B-side, but the real fun comes from both sides of the group's 1981 debut single. To say they're both derivative of early Cabaret Voltaire would put it mildly -- even guitars are heard! -- though it is interesting hearing the original version of "Body to Body." ~ Ned Raggett
