WORD OF MOUTH was Jaco Pastorius' the first solo group recording, and it does a good deal to substantiate the widely held claims concerning the bassist's genius and wizardry. As a technician, Pastorius was untouchable, and his radical, melodic approach (he seems to play both rhythm and lead at once) forced a generation of bassists to reconceptualize their relationship to the instrument.
Pastorius' skills are on full display on this recording, as shown by the first cut, "Crisis," which lives up to the feeling of its title as a mind boggling, rapid-fire bass line tears through a tapestry of fragmentary instrumental sounds. The pieces that follow are stylistically varied and hop from Bach ("Chromatic Fantasy"), to the Beatles ("Blackbird"), to revisited swing ("Liberty City"). While the orchestrations toward the end of the album get somewhat heavy-handed, Pastorius' fluid agility and the contributions of top-drawer players such as Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette and harmonica player Toots Thielmans make WORD OF MOUTH a must for fusion fans.
Recorded in 1981 at the height of the bassist's career, six years before his untimely death, Word of Mouth showcases Pastorius' compositional skills, as well as a starstudded big band including Jean 'Toots' Thielemans, Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine, Don Alias and Jack DeJohnette. Word Of Mouth album
$7.25 This album appeared within the same year as WAKA/JAWAKA and continued Zappa's exploration of the possibilities for composing and arranging material for a big band with a hefty brass and reed section. Both albums were produced during the period in which he was recuperating from injuries sustained when he was thrown from the stage during a London concert the year before. THE GRAND WAZOO still sounds like a fresh and equal marriage of Zappa's already developed and apparent musical sensibilities with large ensemble jazz writing. The couple vocal numbers utilize the singing as another melodic line, and are knitted into the whole fabric rather than laying on top.
Unfortunately, after this pair of 1972 albums, Zappa never revisited this particular approach again--his touring bands were never on this scale and his large-scale writing was directed towards orchestras.

| | Jean-Luc Ponty Enigmatic Ocean CD (1977)
Word Of Mouth CD music
$8.39 Arguably Jean-Luc Ponty's finest record, ENIGMATIC OCEAN benefits from the two-pronged attack of Ponty's engrossing violin playing and guitarist Allan Holdsworth's equally majestic command of his own six-string and its accompanying devices. Compositionally, the tracks move from fast and furious fusion to moments of blissful restraint.
The lovely "Nostalgic Lady" features Holdsworth in peak form, coloring in the foreground with pastel shades of guitar synth, while former Journey drummer Steve Smith caresses Ponty's sultry violins with graceful strokes to cymbal and snare. The multi-part ...

Word Of Mouth songs
$12.65 INVITATION is a 1983 live album by the innovative jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius.
Electric bassist Jaco Pastorius' Word of Mouth big band made two recordings for Warner Bros. during its short life, of which is this is the superior one. The large ensemble (five trumpets including Randy Brecker, five reeds with solo space for Bobby Mintzer on tenor and soprano, four trombones, two French horns, Toots Thielemans on harmonica, drummer Peter Erskine, percussionist Don Alias, and Othello on steel drum) performs a variety of superior material. Although Pastorius takes his share of solo space, and ...

| | Warren Zevon Envoy CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Word Of Mouth CD music
$10.45 While moderation was never Warren Zevon's strong suit, his efforts to clean himself up in the early '80s resulted in two of his finest albums, 1980's literate but corrosive Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School and the following year's explosive live set Stand in the Fire. It seemed as if the wired chaos of Zevon's personal life had been channeled into his art on those LPs, but after another bout with the bottle and another attempt at sobriety, Zevon tried another approach at merging his music and his life on 1982's The Envoy. On The Envoy's best songs, Zevon tackles his dangerous appetites head on; "Charlie's Medicine" is a chilling requiem for a drug dealer who used to sell him dope, "Jesus Mentioned" is a spare but curiously moving meditation on the death of Elvis Presley, who "went walking on the water with his pills," and the ragged but right "Ain't That Pretty at All" is an unlikely but powerful recovery anthem in which he howls "I'd rather feel bad than not feel anything at all." When Zevon confronts his own demons on The Envoy, the album is intense and compelling stuff, but unfortunately there aren't enough of these moments to prop up the rest of the set, which is smart and literate but not especially exciting. Novelist Thomas McGuane co-wrote "The Overdraft," a hard-charging rocker that unfortunately doesn't make much sense, while the languid "The Hula Hula Boys" plays like a joke in which the punch line got lost, and the two love songs, "Let Nothing Come Between You" and "Looking for the Next Best Thing," manage to sound at once heartfelt and like lesser variations on themes he'd covered with greater strength before. ...
| | 3rd Force Force Field CD (1999)
Word Of Mouth music CDs
$11.99 Additional personnel includes: Grant Geissman (guitar, nylon string guitar, slide guitar); Craig Chaquico, Brian Hughes (guitar); Richard Hardy (flute, bamboo flute, clarinet, saxophone, horns); Paul Taylor (soprano saxophone); John Klemmer, Bryan Savage (saxophone); John Halbleib (trumpet, flugelhorn, horns).
Anyone not hip to the diverse genre sounds coming out of Higher Octave these days can find the perfect sampler in 3rd Force's vibe-intensive Force Field. While the electronic keyboard trio of William Aura, Craig Dobbin, and Alain Eskinasi provides thick, acid jazzy grooves that range from dreamy and laid back ("7th Heaven") to shuffling hip-hop, trip-hop, and aggressive blues, some of the label's biggest names have a ball strutting their own stuff as the lead melodies and harmonies. Grant Geissman in particular gets opportunities to go easy on the nylon string (playing off the distant call and response of saxman John Klemmer and John Halblieb's muted trumpet), swampy on the slide guitar (the thickly percussive, dark and haunting "Bridge of Dreams"), and joyously funky on electric. Brian Hughes' brisk electric strings take center stage on the throbbing "Something Special," while Craig Chaquico's snappy acoustic flow weaves in and out of Richard Hardy's wistful sax harmony on "The Closer You Get." Ozzie Ahlers interjects a few lively piano solos on two of the Chaquico-led tunes, but it's just for name value; Dobbin's sparkling ivory tenderness is just as grand. Sax wise, 3rd Force seeks the smoky cool of Bryan Savage and Paul Taylor, whose soprano lines form a call and ...
