If you're looking for some potent jazz, look no further. Pianist Herbie Hancock's V.S.O.P. - LIVE UNDER THE SKY is about as heavy as it gets. This release features the legendary mid-1960s Miles Davis lineup, minus Davis, of course. In the great trumpeter's stead, however, is the fiery Freddie Hubbard.
Recorded live in Japan during the summer of 1979, this double album features Hancock and his group combining the funky groove of hard-bop with the seeming lawlessness of '70s fusion. No one player outshines another on this record, though many of the sparks that ignite the music come from drummer Tony Williams, who swings elegantly, but fills the gaps in between phrases with thunderous tom-tom rolls and piercing cymbal smashes, his playing spurring each soloist on to higher vistas. Even though most of this material is hard-hitting, there is some sensitivity on LIVE UNDER THE SKY, too. For example, bassist Ron Carter's tune "Tear Drop" is dark and subtle. On this selection, Carter's bass solo is abstract yet easy to follow. Towards the end of the chorus, the drums fade out, leaving room for Carter and Hancock to create an intimate musical dialogue. This is drummer Scott Amendola's second recording as a leader, although his first, recorded in late 1999, was an independent release and not widely distributed. Amendola's debut on the West Coast Cryptogramophone label (with better distribution, hopefully) has him retaining four-fifths of his quintet, with label regular Nels Cline newly added on guitars. Jenny Scheinman continues on violin, Todd Sickafoose remains on acoustic bass, and Eric Crystal is once again on saxophones. Amendola wrote or arranged all the compositions on this CD, and he definitely has an interactive group sound in mind. Solo space is quite generous (the eight tracks are seven to eight minutes long on the average) but the blend of violin, sax, and guitar also makes for a great ensemble sound, and the musicians frequently comp behind each other, providing additional texture and ear-pleasing counterpoint.
Jazz musicians of Amendola's age, disposition, and talent are anything but rigid when it comes to interests and influences, and Cry is not only tight and passionate, but also highly eclectic. As a drummer, Amendola never seems to be striving for any specific effect, but he has a great sense of dynamics, and is always deep in the groove. He's a percussionist who seemingly can't help being funky (quietly or exuberantly) no matter what he's playing. His bandmates are equally versatile. JOHN WALKER was destined to become a musical superstar and icon of the 60’s Hollywood and London rock and roll scene. The combination of JOHN’S musical abilities and drop-dead gorgeous looks proved irresistible to promoters, managers, agents, and fans around the world. By the time he was eighteen, JOHN had given guitar lessons to younger friends in his Calfornia neighborhood – Carl Wilson, Brian Wilson, and David Marks – who practiced their new surf music in JOHN’S family garage, incorporating some of the guitar riffs JOHN had taught them in their music, and who went on to form THE BEACH BOYS.
