Hospital label managers Tony Coleman and Chris Goss proved some enviable A&R skills in picking up the 22-year-old Lincoln Barrett for an intern position at their acclaimed drum'n'bass imprint last year. His debut album for the label brings together a veritable slew of singles with a scattering of new material -- the sound of which is perhaps best described as knees-up party music, funk elements touching up an ever-present filtered and almost disco back end. Accessible, danceable, and listenable -- something for the summer. ~ Kingsley Marshall

True Colors album
$13.45 It's been a long road for Chris Goss and Tony Colman's Hospital Records. Originally established in 1996, its jazz and rare groove influences held the label very much at the fringes of drum'n'bass while more mechanical material dominated the nation's dancefloors. However, as the music evolved, so the melting pot of Hospital became increasingly in demand, with the irresistible "Song in the Key of Knife" a significant turning point in the popularity of the label. Their debut full-length, Pull the Plug, built upon these 12" accomplishments with a well-rounded body of work that succeeded, where so many others had failed, in blending soul and funk at a frenetic pace of 170 beats per minute. This sophomore outing again demonstrates the sheer width of field open to drum'n'bass producers. Although Colman has since flown the studio solo, he shows no letup in the quality control here -- from the breathtaking opening through to the vocal ...

| | High Contrast High Society CD (2004)
True Colors music CDs
$12.29 High Contrast's 2002 debut was entirely unpretentious. Its giddy rookie drum'n'bass skitters went ballistic into vintage vocal sample atmospheres with nary a pander to the electronic music community's savagely permutational itch. In '04, after a year of stellar remix work, Contrast (aka Welshman Lincoln Barrett) returns with High Society, a remarkable statement-maker that drops its share of can't-miss dancefloor moments, but also revels in posing hyperkinetic percussion against gently swelling, almost melancholic basslines. This dynamic in the emotions and music makes Society as much an album as Contrast's first recording was, but also highlights where he's grown. Grime-hopeful Nolay spits hollow-point bullets over the snare reports, snyth cues, and bass pulses of "Angels and Fly" -- it sounds like Future Sound of London backing the boastful, malevolent transmissions of a pirate radio MC. But "Angels"' post-millennial tension is at sharp angles to "Just Say," a collaboration crossing Contrast's usual percussion slap with sunny guitar drop-ins, dubby horn samples, and the soulful patois of garage/dancehall vocalist Spoonface. As catchy as these tracks are, extended drum 'n' bass workouts like "Lovesick" and "Racing Green" keep the rhythms interesting by periodically suspending them in favor of chopped-up and filtered disco and soul ...

| | Madlib Beat Konducta Vol. 3-4: India CD (2007)
True Colors CD music
$11.79 As prolific as he is talented, producer extraordinaire Madlib moved east for his second Beat Konducta installment, In India. Unlike Vol. 1-2, which was themed around an imaginary film, Vol. 3-4 has no clear overarching purpose, and the 34 tracks connect to one another only because their samples were all taken from Indian records from the '70s and '80s. And it's here that Madlib's high output works both positively and negatively for him. On one hand, he's able to offer an extraordinary amount of different sounds all tabled around a unifying idea (the sitar, the tabla), from the very RZA-esque "Smoke Circles" to the percussive "Freeze" to the fuzzy, layered vocals of "Dancing Girls Theme." But he also relies almost solely on his own innate and insane amount of natural skill, without always thinking much about the finished product, too excited about the next thing he's going to create to even remember what he did a few minutes before, and this carelessness shows up now and again, weakening the overall effect of the record. Cuts like "Masala," "Another Getaway," "Dark Alley Incidental Music," and "The Rip Off (Scene 3)" seem hastily thrown together without much consideration for either the album as a whole or even the tracks themselves, a little too droney and atonal to do much more but loop around tiredly. Of course, this same kind of approach, this flexibility, can also produce some pretty great work, and fortunately most of Vol. 3-4: Beat Konducta in India falls into that category. "Accordion for Raj," for example, ...
