Still on the Move is a somewhat revised and expanded version of the 1992 Ace CD compilation Lonnie on the Move, which was itself a slightly revised reissue of a mid-'70s double-LP compilation album of 1960s Fraternity recordings. It's "somewhat revised" because it actually eliminates two tracks from Lonnie on the Move, "Soul Express" and "Jam and Butter." That's because those are actually different titles for the same recording, and also because that recording appears under its proper name, "The Freeze," on another Mack anthology on Ace, Memphis Wham! Still on the Move also adds a bunch of tracks that haven't been included on reissue comps before, among them sides from rare mid-'60s Fraternity singles and five previously unreleased alternate takes. Determining what previously appeared where is a complicated enough exercise to make you wish, actually, that you didn't even know about those other compilations. What's important is that, when combined with the other two Mack Ace CD anthologies, From Nashville to Memphis and Memphis Wham!, Still on the Move provides all the 1960s Mack Fraternity recordings you could possibly want. What's more important is that this is very good rock-R&B-country-soul, not quite as good as his best 1960s Fraternity stuff (as heard on the Memphis Wham! comp), but not far off that mark. His idiosyncratic vibrato guitar is consistently excellent, and the material (whether instrumental or vocal) is frankly much more varied and interesting than those of many other artists from the time who were working the same territory. "Wildwood Flower" sounds like a more even-tempered Link Wray, "Snow on the Mountain" is a first-class overlooked blue-eyed soul cooker from 1967, and the overdone "Money" gets a very cool minor-keyed interpretation. His singing is good enough to make you wish that he'd sung more often, and indeed some cuts, like "I Found a Love," sound suspiciously like they were meant to have lead vocals but never got overdubbed with them, as they have full backup vocal choruses. On the other hand, instrumental workouts like "Stand By Me" bring a fresh interpretation to such standards that wouldn't have been possible if they'd included vocals. ~ Richie Unterberger
The celebrated 1976 double album from that 'Memphis' man, amended and expanded by the addition of 10previously-unissued or unreissued masters and alternates. 26 remastered tracks. 2002.

Still On The Move album
$13.09 As one of the pioneers in Tex-Mex music, Doug Sahm fused rock & roll, R&B, conjunto, and country. This posthumous release, containing some of the last recordings made before his death, finds Sahm focusing on the country part of that equation. As this disc makes plain, country music was a major part of Sahm's life and music, and these tracks are pure, dyed-in-the-wool honky-tonk in the grand old style. Most are original tunes, and "Oh No! Not Another One" shows Sahm's feelings about country by humorously expressing his dismay at the way pop posers have taken over the country music scene. "Texas Me" is an old Sahm staple, but it's given new ...
| | Junior Watson If I Had A Genie CD (2002)
Still On The Move CD music
$18.99 Too bad guitarist Junior Watson isn't as prolific as he is talented. This is only his second solo album and it comes eight years after his first. Regardless, it's nearly an hour's worth of crackling jump blues, played and sung by a guy with chops to spare and a light enough vocal touch to make these 11 covers and three originals connect like the finest music from the '40s and '50s jazz/blues hipsters that have obviously influenced his style. Watson's own contemporaries, such as Rick Holmstrom, Jimmie Vaughan, and Kim Wilson, sing his praises for a good reason; his taste and tone recall the heavyweights of the ...
| | Saunders King Cool Blues, Jumps & Shuffles CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Still On The Move music CDs
$17.05 Includes recordings originally released on Rhythm, Modern, RPM, and Flair in the 1940s and early 1950s.
The accurately titled Cool Blues, Jumps & Shuffles is a good overview of Saunders King's career containing 25 tracks from 1942-1954, though it's slightly flawed in that it draws exclusively from his Rhythm and Modern recordings. Those do comprise the bulk of his sessions, but this doesn't include anything from the sides he cut for a few other companies. Still, it does have both parts of his 1942 hit "S.K. Blues," as well as his pair of 1949 R&B hits, "Empty Bedroom Blues" and "Stay Gone Blues." As a whole, the disc shows ...

| | Spider John Koerner Raised By Humans CD (1992)
Still On The Move music CDs
$14.45 Fifty-three-year-old folksinger Spider John Koerner delivers only his sixth solo album in 27 years with Raised by Humans, following Spider Blues (1965), Running, Jumping, Standing Still (1969), Music Is Just a Bunch of Notes (1972), Some American Folk Songs Like They Used To (1974), and Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Been (1986). That last album marked something of a resurgence for Koerner, but it was a little deceptive in the sense that the recording was six years old when it was released. So, it's been more than six years between albums for Koerner, but not, perhaps, as much as 12, by the evidence of one of the few original compositions, "Summer of '88," the singer's wry observation of the ...
