Fat Cat are proud to announce their release by recent signings (2002) from Iceland, Mum. Highly-anticipated second album from this Icelandic 4-piece. Beautifully meshing some dense but intricate programming with gorgeous vocal and instrumental melodies, richly textured, hypnotic and unashamedly sumptuous.
Mum: Gunnar Orn Tynes, Orvar Poreyjarson Smarason, Kristin Anna Valtysdottir, Gyda Valtysdottir.l Personnel: Helga _óra Björgvinsdóttir (violin, viola). Audio Mixer: Valgeir Sigurdsson. Recording information: A Rafstodvarvegi; Freyjugotu Og Fjolnisveginum Reykjavik; Galtarvita I Sudureyrarhreppi; Hjallabrekku Kopavogi; Hufelandsstrasse Berlin; I Ellidaardalnum; Mjolnerparken Kobenhvn; Studioinu I Alafosskvosinni (I Mosfellssveit) Og Grodur; Sumarbustadnum A Laugarvatni. Unknown Contributor Role: Samuli Kosminen. Múm's first album for Fat Cat -- by no coincidence, the label that also broke fellow Icelanders Sigur Rós -- has all the majestic synths, crackly drum machine percussion, sampled silence, and crystalline vocals you'd expect from the country that produced Björk and Sigur Rós, though with less focus on digital sound than the former and less reliance on drama than the latter. Múm is very interested in the music of sound, but Finally We Are No One never sounds like a difficult record; if it's not the instruments sounding naïve or folksy (in good ways), the lisping, childlike vocals are bound to prompt adjectives like adorable and precious. "Green Grass of Tunnel" has the sweet melancholia, coloring-book hip-hop, and slowly shifting chords of poptronica producers like isan or Boards of Canada, and also trades on the wide-eyed fairy-tale qualities of Björk. Apart from the hefty title, "Don't Be Afraid, You Have Just Got Your Eyes Closed" approaches mainstream appeal -- briefly, and at several different times -- with a nice dance beat gradually replaced by a beatbox breakdown, toy xylophone, and a nice trumpet melody. Several individual passages of songs strike an evocative chord, like the string quartet, piano, warm synthesizers, and percussion rumblings of "K/Half Noise" combining to recall the quieter portions of Tortoise's landmark "Djed." ~ John Bush
Rolling Stone (5/23/02, p.82) - 3.5 out of 5 stars - "...Using dreamy electric-toy melodies, Mum find majestic sounds in unlikely places..." Q (6/02, p.120) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...The fuss was entirely justified. as their quirky take on music is utterly unique...What really sets them apart is their curious combination of bright-eyed playfulness and maudlin moods..." Alternative Press (8/02, p.77) - 9 out of 10 - "...Mums beguiling juxtaposition of ancient and contemporary influences is serene and reassuring...almost magical enough to give credence to the wide-held Icelandic belief in the supernatural." CMJ (7/22/02, p.14) - "...Beautifully shimmering music..." Mojo (Publisher) (6/02, p.116) - "...Unavoidably lonely, yet strangely uplifting..." NME (Magazine) (5/25/02, p.32) - 7 out of 10 - "...Nowhere is quite as odd as Mum's native Iceland, and few childhoods could be as simultaneously idyllic and creepy as those soundtracked by Mum's electronica..." Finally We Are No One Music Mum Finally We Are No One Songs Finally We Are No One Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Interesting cd I am usually not a fan of electronica or anything that is even remotely in that category, but this cd is actually pretty good. I heard song 3 in the movie Wicker Park and was intriqued by the singer's voice. I had a gift certificate to use and couldn't think of a cd to get. I remembered the song from Wicker Park was by Mum so I got this cd and wasn't disappointed. I like the Team Sleep cd that came out recently and some old Massive Attack cds and this is along the same lines, except with a Bjork-sounding Icelandic singer (her voice is much better than Bjork though). The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it gets repetitive at times and they use too much accordian or the accordian sound on their sampler or something. All in all it is a good cd especially if you are in the mood for something different. I usually listen to heavier music like Dredg, Pulse Ultra, Deftones, the Bled and stuff like that but I probably will buy some of the older Mum cds because they are definitely an interesting group with a great deal of musical talent. tracks This is undoubtedly a good album. We Have A Map of the Piano is a beautiful song, however this is a review for the track names that are displayed incorrectly.

Not Quite folks... This is a stong statment, without a doubt; but let's not be daft and call it as good as Sigur Ros. Needs far more texture, variety, depth and angst to reach their icelandic counterparts. Enjoyable, but 5 stars it is not. Submitted by mrmoore01 (Bloomington, IN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
such a classic!!! thanks to radio1190.org, or I may never have been exposed to this truly wonderful gift from some very talented(and quirky) individuals. sounding like some spooky angels rummaging through the attic, this music sounds best to me when the weather is heavy, during a foggy thunderstorm, or when the snow is floating down. just look out of any window. enjoy! peace. Like Sigur Ros in a fit of giggles This album has done well to bring you that thoroughly textured and playful electronic music sound - with the female vocals that are distorted, depressed, and delightful. It's a perfect soundtrack to put on while you're doing something that you love. Submitted by a reviewer (Brooklyn, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Stone Temple Pilots: Weiland (vocals); Dean DeLeo (guitar); Robert DeLeo (bass); Eric Kretz (drums). Recorded at Rumbo Recorders, Los Angeles. "Plush" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal." Stone Temple Pilots were positively vilified once their 1992 debut, Core, started scaling the charts in 1993, pegged as fifth-rate Pearl Jam copyists. It is true that the worst moments of Core play like a parody of the Seattle scene -- titles like "Dead and Bloated" and "Crackerman" tell you that much, playing like really bad Alice in Chains parodies, and the entire record tends to sink into gormless post-grunge sludge. Furthermore, even if it rocks pretty hard, it's usually without much character, sounding like cut-rate grunge. To be fair, it's more that they share the same influences as their peers than being overt copycats, but it's still a little disheartening all the same. If ...
