Speedealer: Jeff Hirshberg, Eric Schmidt (vocals, guitar); Harden Harrison (vocals, drums); Rodney Skelton (bass). Recorded at The Plant, Sausalito, California. Personnel: Eric Schmidt , Jeff Hirshberg (vocals, guitar); Harden Harrison (vocals, drums). Audio Mixer: Kent Matcke. Recording information: The Record Plant, Sausalito, CA. The third release from Speedealer finds them on familiar territory, making more of their patented brand of stoner metal. Their hardcore punk influences are present again, but the album has more of a united feel and incorporates more than just an accelerated tempo. Also improving their situation is producer Jason Newsted, who encourages a slower and heavier vibe from the band without sacrificing their distinct swagger. From the angst-ridden chug of "Leave Me Alone" to the Metallica-esque grandeur of the instrumental "Infinitesimal," this is one of Speedealer's best records. ~ Bradley TorreanoCMJ (5/6/02, p.16) - "...Bong-bubbling stoner rock..." | | Proto-Kaw Wait Of Glory CD (2006)
Second Sight
$10.69 Proto-Kaw: Daryl Batchelor (trumpet, flugelhorn); Craig Kew (6-string bass); Mike Patrum (drums); Jake Livgren, Kerry Livgren, Lynn Meredith, John Bolton, Jr., Dan Wright. Personnel: Jake Livgren (vocals, guitar, alto saxophone, percussion, background vocals); Lynn Meredith (vocals); Kerry Livgren (guitar, piano, keyboards, percussion, background vocals); John Bolton, Jr. (flute, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Dan Wright (organ, keyboards); Craig Kew (background vocals). Recording information: Grandy Zine, Berryton, KS (2005). Former Kansas member Kerry Livgren was responsible for penning the group's two best-known tracks (which remain standards on classic rock radio): "Carry on Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind." But by the early 21st century, Livgren had put his Kansas days behind him and launched a new outfit, Proto-Kaw. 2006 saw the release of their third release overall, The Wait of Glory, which shows that Livgren is still an admirer of bombastic hard rock, with prog rock tendencies. The difference between the tracks on The Wait of Glory and the aforementioned Kansas hits are that those two aforementioned tracks possessed tight arrangements and were hook-heavy. The tracks here are simply not as immediately hard-hitting (as evidenced by such selections as "Relics of the Tempest"). There are a few surprises, however, such as the hard rockers "When the Rains Come" and "Physic," which are both led by horns (rather than the patented guitar/keyboard interplay that Kansas popularized). If prog rock with heavy ties to the genre's '70s heyday (not to mention being played by what sounds like expertly skilled session musicians) is your bag, then Proto-Kaw's The Wait of Glory should fit in well with your copies of Kansas and Leftoverture. ~ Greg Prato Former ...
| | Disgruntled Sherpa Project Old Hat CD (2006)
Second Sight
$12.69 Philadelphia, PA February 15, 2006 -- The Disgruntled Sherpa Project, Philadelphia's most enigmatic (in this case meaning "unknown") band released their fifth CD, OLD HAT. The album was recorded from late summer through Christmas 2005 in Delaware County, PA with the band's mobile recording unit which lent itself to the clubhouse atmosphere of the recordings."Old Hat" was mixed and mastered by Steve LaFashia from Jealousy Curve who also worked on the band's 2004 album, "Keeping It Real". The album is an exploration of roots rock, country and bluegrass and "all things Americana" as the band borrows a term from rock legend Gram Parsons and labels the music part of "Cosmic American Music."The 12 tracks on the album range from rock songs such as "In a Meadow" and "Perfect" to dulcimer and mandolin driven country and bluegrass songs like "Western Prayer" and "Shenandoah" to acoustic songs "Can't Rain All the Time" and "Crumbling Down."“In fact there's a great deal of acoustic music reflecting a warmer, more family oriented vibe. Working on this disc has been without a doubt the most fun I've ever had recording," commented Disgruntled Sherpa drummer Wayne Lee. "From top to bottom it’s the most diverse body of music I've had the pleasure of playing on." According to the band, the album contains evokes references to the Civil War, President Lincoln’s assassination, and Zapata's uprising in Mexico without a glamorized musical history lesson. "There is something for everyone. From hard rock to slow ballads, stripped down rock and roll to old school country," Lee adds."Everything with the band and our lives is at a point where we just ...
