Initial pressings included a bonus DVD featuring live performances and behind-the-scenes footage.
By the time Atreyu's 2002 debut full-length SUICIDE NOTES AND BUTTERFLY KISSES was released, they'd already built a devoted following in their native Orange County, California, with their polished yet punishing brand of metalcore. An EP, FRACTURES IN THE FACADE OF YOUR PORCELAIN BEAUTY, had established the band's sonic blueprint, and Atreyu reworked three songs from the EP to place among the newer material on SUICIDE NOTES.
The group's hallmarks-furiously churning riffs, double-bass thunder, and tortured screamo vocals-arrive fully formed here. Titles like "Living Each Day Like You're Already Dead" and "Someone's Standing On My Chest" suggest lead singer and lyricist Alex Vartkatzas's penchant for violent psychological anguish and anger, feelings reinforced by the brutal nature of the music. The singles "Ain't Love Grand" and "Lip Gloss and Black" are album highlights, not least for their melodic choruses sung by drummer Brandon Saller, but there isn't a weak track on the disc. Atreyu would go on to refine their unique sound, but this is the album that started it all, and it's still one of their best.

This Album gave me the musical taste I have today I first heard this cd blasting at lunch the first day of senior year in high school back in 2003. I'll admit up until that point I really only listened to gangsta rap, and the heaviest thing I listened to was probably Incubus. When I heard this, I fell in love with the fast drums (particularly the double bass although I didnt know what that was yet) and the melodies of the dual guatar. The vocals, added to the intensity of the overall product. I didnt know music like this existed. I mean it wasnt being spoonfed to the masses via MTV and the radio, so this was like a new thing for me. I was hooked to hardcore/metal from that day forward.
Looking back on it now "Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses" really isnt that special, but this cd was responsible for my personal music revolution, so it holds a special place in my heart.
Since being exposed to this album, I have been engrossed in the rise of metalcore and deathcore, which traditional metal enthusiests would label a trend. I don't care what they have to say. Bands like Lamb Of God, The Black Dahlia Murder, As Blood Runs Black, Darkest Hour, and The Acacia Strain are good for metal. That doesnt mean I don't listen to what some ppl would consider "real metal" such as Dissection, Kalmah, At The Gates, Amon Amarth, (old) In Flames and Dark Tranquility.
What I'm trying to say is if it wasnt for Atreyu, I wouldnt have listened to metal at all. This album is a perfect introduction for someone who hasnt been exposed to hardcore or metal.
Yeah I've moved on to bigger and better things musically, but for something produced in the infancy of metalcore, this album still holds up today. Also if you're looking for anything better than S.N.A.B.K. from Atreyu, you wont find it. They've gone for a softer sound, and the vocals have gotten even worse through the years.
If you're not in to listening to heavier music than this, I suggest you listen to Avenged Sevenfold, From Autumn To Ashes, and Hopesfall. If you want to go a notch above Atreyu in the heavy department, start off with bands like Killswitch Engage, The Devil Wears Prada, August Burns Red, Caliban, Unearth, and As I Lay Dying; then work your way up from there. You'll be blasting Carnifex and Job For A Cowboy in no time! Submitted by antcast113 (Los Angeles, The Capital of the World AKA The Grea) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Album This has to be the best record atreyu has ever put out. They mix a blend of different rythms and beautiful sounds and put it together to make a great album. Also, you don't usually find many hardcore bands that can write such emotionally captivating lyrics as well as these guys do. In my opinion, this cd is much better than the curse or a death grip on yesterday. Atreyu at its finest; you can find it on this album. Submitted by Cody (Orange County, Ca.) Was This Review Helpful? wow, garbage the only thing admirable about these guys is they can fool people into buying their cds and liking it because its "hardcore" when they really suck. hardcore aint a bad thing, its when you force it and scream with no skills like these guys that it becomes garbage and it just gives a bad name to every band that tries to make it on the hardcore scene, this is the kind of crap that turns people off. | | Megadeth Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good! CD (1985) Remix
Suicide Notes And Butterfly Kisses
$8.15 After guitarist Dave Mustaine was booted out of Metallica in 1983, he immediately returned home to San Francisco and formed Megadeth. The new outfit was instantly compared to Mustaine's former band, and the comparisons haven't subsided since. Whereas both outfits shared such musical elements as muted guitar riffs and speedy rhythms, Megadeth's first album seemed to be more influenced by punk and hardcore. KILLING IS MY BUSINESS AND BUSINESS IS GOOD also saw Mustaine's debuting his lead-vocal skills.
Mustaine must have had a lot of pent-up anger to express, since KILLING is simply explosive from beginning to end. The brutal title track lyrically deals with a sniper who revels in hunting down his unsuspecting prey. Nancy Sinatra's hit "These Boots are Made For Walking" is redone as a blinding speed metal ditty. Other highlights include the album opening "Last Rites/Loved to Death" and the pro-heavy metal "Rattlehead." The album-closing "Mechanix" had previously surfaced-as "The Four Horsemen," with different lyrics-on Metallica's debut KILL 'EM ALL. While not as exceptional as Megadeth's subsequent albums, KILLING proves that Mustaine is a survivor.
If you have the original version of Megadeth's debut record, Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!, then there is no reason to go out and buy this slightly remixed 2002 version. Only the most hardcore fan would want to own both. It is a classic metal album, as good if not better than Metallica's or Slayer's debut records. Songs like "Looking Down the Cross" and "The Skull Beneath the Skin" are heavy, while sillier tunes like "Killing Is My Business" and Megadeth's cover of the Nancy Sinatra hit "These Boots" are a lot of fun. The guitar playing all over the record absolutely shreds. This was music from the glory years of metal and Megadeth was at the top of the game with many ...

Suicide Notes And Butterfly Kisses
$17.89 Re-forming no less than 27 years after the band last broke up, Van Der Graaf Generator were never going to put together the usual kind of reunion record. For a start, the reunion itself is largely in the eye of the beholder -- various permutations of the band have played together on a number of occasions over the past three decades, which means that it's their own understanding of what the Van Der Graaf Generator name signifies that dominates this album, rather than any of the motives and moods that normally ...
