Initial copies of THE LAST BROADCAST include a limited edition bonus disc of 4 previously unreleased songs.

England's Doves began as teenage purveyors of feel-good dance music in the early '90s as Sub Sub, and even scored a minor hit. After a studio fire cost them their equipment along with demos of their second release, the members of Sub Sub forged ahead, transform their sound and renaming themselves. With 200's LOST SOULS, Doves blew up in England and garnered a cult following in the states, signaling a mess of anticipation for 2002's THE LAST BROADCAST.

LAST BROADCAST clearly owes heaps to early-'90s shoegazing bands like Ride and Lush, nowhere more so than on the dizzying, spiraling "Words." At other times THE LAST BROADCAST recalls the Manchester (not coincidentally Doves' hometown) sound of the same era, particularly hearkening back to Inspiral Carpets (see "There Goes The Fear"). However, to truly describe Doves one would have to invoke everyone from the Kinks to James, as the threesome pick from all over the British musical map to conjure up a delectable sound, wholly its own. On THE LAST BROADCAST, Doves uphold the hope aroused by their thrilling debut.

Recorded in England between January 2001 and January 2002.

3 stars Doves are awesome!!!
"The Last Broadcast" is an excellent CD and deserves a place in Brit Pop history. Not only is the CD awesome but the bonus disc that comes with the initial run is awesome!!! The songs "There Goes the Fear," "The Last Broadcast," "Caught By the River," "Far From Grace," and "Sulphur Man" are highlights even though I could list almost every song on the album and from the bonus disc!!! A great album that any true fan of 90's to modern brit pop should own. Also, a must for fans of King Crimson's "In the Court of the Crimson King" album. Buy it, you'll love it!!!

5 stars The best album since OK Computer
This is simply a monumental record. I found about this band by looking at the "related artists" section when buying Coldplay's last record... and this is so much better than any other British band out there at this moment. But this album, these guys will be huge (I don't know why is this band practically unknown outside of the UK).

5 stars Very, very thought provoking...well, just reaaaaal good!
Ok. My tastes are a possibly a little different than those of normal eart hl ings. Forinstance, I like stuff like The Cure, Bowie, Radiohead, and Joy Division/New Order. This is the 5th best band I have. Hah! And chances are - you don't got it! Seriously, though, you should definitely buy this as soon as you have the ability/frame of mind to do so. Its not Disintegration, Dark Side Of The Moon, Low, Regatta De Blanc or Low, but please consider buying it.

5 stars I can't stop playing this CD
This is the first rock CD I have bought in years and it is soooo good. It sounds like the Beatles play Pink Floyd with Morrisey, but at the same time it sounds like nothing I've heard before. My wife hates it though, I should add.

Doves Lost Souls CD  (2000)

CD $11.79  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
While some rock groups have been known to lean heavily on electronic elements (Radiohead, the Flaming Lips), it's rare for an electronica act to morph into a rock band. But that's exactly what the Manchester, England dance trio Sub Sub did when they reinvented themselves as Doves. Surprisingly enough, the Britpop group's bold 2000 debut, LOST SOULS, arrived fully formed, revealing airy shoegazer atmospherics anchored by a muscular, stadium-ready sound. The album opens with the dream-like "Firesuite," which gives way to the surging, soul-tinged "Here It Comes." Throughout the record, the band--consisting of Jimi Goodwin and brothers Jez and Andy Williams, who all share vocal and instrumental duties--maintains a hypnotically dark tone that's best showcased on the haunting "Sea Song" and the echo-laden "Rise." And unlike many front-loaded rock discs, LOST SOULS saves its most energetic, guitar-heavy tracks until later in the album, with the driving "Catch the Sun" and "The Cedar Room" (one of Doves' most soaringly anthemic songs) pushing ...

"Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. This limited edition includes a bonus DVD version of YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS including the whole album in surround sound, videos and rare tracks. Emerging sometime in the '80s, Oklahoma boys The Flaming Lips have held steady to a peripheral, but significant location in the indie-rock world, visionaries blessed with a hyper-keen pop sensibility. In 1999, four years removed from the surprise alterna-pop hit "She Don't Use Jelly," the trio fronted by the fetching, impelling whisper of Wayne Coyne hit a remarkably high note, making scores of year-end 'best of' lists with THE SOFT BULLETIN, a mellifluous, masterful slice of Brian Wilson-level pop distorted through a few looking glasses. Following an acclaimed album is always a craggy cliff of anticipation, but if BULLETIN was the Flaming Lips' PET SOUNDS, then the ethereal YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS may be their SMILEY SMILE, a record which skillfully straddles the line between pop and experimentation. YOSHIMI offers lush, enveloping arrangements, forging a soundscape both comfortably predictable and satisfyingly, even dizzyingly, diverse, awash in Todd Rundgren-like grandiosity, yet startlingly simple in structure like the better work of Paul McCartney. Despite having the air ...

"Clocks" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Record Of The Year. A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. "In My Place" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. In 2000, Coldplay appeared seemingly out of nowhere and immediately advanced to the head of the Britpop class in the UK, while easily outdistancing the likes of Oasis and Blur in terms of US popularity. The most striking thing was that they did it with zero attitude and unassuming, melodic tunes humbly presented with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of memorability. That trend continues on the band's second album, A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD. There's little stylistic alteration from PARACHUTES here, which is just fine, considering how enormously and instantly appealing that style is. While Travis, Elbow, and other entrants in the Britpop sweepstakes offer a not dissimilar sound, none can communicate with the honest immediacy and directness of Coldplay. Part of the key, apart from melodies so ridiculously catchy as to make Belle & Sebastian sound like Public Image Ltd., may be their working-class sense of all-for-one proletarianism (though not in the breast-beating Oasis manner). Even on "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face," when Chris Martin goes so far as to offer a few boastful phrases, the ultimate sentiment that comes across is the refrain "your guess is good ...

Sweden's Caesars mine a retro, 1960s sound, with touchstones that include the Zombies, the Yardbirds, the Animals, and the poppier side of the British Invasion a la Herman's Hermits. While it might be easy to label them mere revivalists, there is a freshness and conviction in how Caesars approach this classic aesthetic that is immediately appealing. The minor key jangle of "It's Not the Fall That Hurts" and the arpeggios and layered harmonies of "Out There" hit all the right buttons, while "My Heart Is Breaking Down" shows the band's knack for a well-constructed hook. At times, as on "Spirit," the opening track, Caesars meld their '60s obsession with a contemporary indie sensibility. Moody and expansive, the tune brings together guitars, layered vocals, and a haunting keyboard line--first with a quiet spaciousness, then with a sense of rock majesty, complete with heavy ...
