The pretense of this group's name and their debut record's title are generally in keeping with the tenets of '90s Euro-metal. Dominated by the many Scandinavian derivations of death, black, goth, and power metal, the movement was as strong as ever when Lake of Tears tossed this disc into the overcrowded metal marketplace. While there were a few decent notices, not much was made of this recording, and for good reason. The guitar work is especially unremarkable, as too many well-worn riffs litter Greater Art, that is, when riffs are attempted at all. Much of the time, a pallid chugging is all Lake of Tears can come up with to support the hoarsely shouted vocals that lack the vivid tone that defines black and death metal ranting, while the guitars lack the heft of doom or sludge metal, making the recording difficult to categorize, but not in a good way. So much mid- to slow-tempo nothingness simply makes Greater Art one to avoid. ~ Vincent Jeffries

Together with fellow countrymen like Cemetary and Tiamat - Lake Of Tears was one of the pioneers in the now famous Swedish melodic death metal scene. With their debut album, Greater Art (1994), the band proved that harsh metal tones could make a perfect blend with the groovy sound of the 70s. Black Mark.

Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome ...

When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That ...

On Chimaira's second full-length album, THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF REASON, the Midwestern nu-metal outfit charges out of the gate with an electrifying mix of brutally direct Sabbath-esque guitars, the scariest death metal howls this side of Morbid Angel, and double-kick-drum patterns so fast and clean they make Slipknot's drummer sound like the guy who played on "Louie Louie." Unlike many of its similarly hard-edged contemporaries, Chimaira features the added novelty ...
Good Side/Bad Side
Master P Good Side/Bad Side CDs  (2004)

Greater Art album
CD $8.75  4.2 stars Audio Samples
In the late 1990s, Percy Miller built a tremendous empire with his No Limit label, featuring a slew of hardcore rap artists, including himself--the incomparable, growl-voiced Master P. No Limit never really went away, but nevertheless Miller decided to revamp it in 2004, and who better to christen the revival than his own alter ego? Christen it Master P does, in a style befitting the brash overstatement of the label known for its instantly recognizable covers featuring tanks and medallions, pastel-colored sleeves, and titles airbrushed in platinum. P's opening salvo is a double concept album loaded with star appearances and featuring two sides of his personality, GOOD SIDE/BAD SIDE. In actuality, the two shades are more suitably described as "bad side" and "badder side" as both are pretty brash. Master P opens the "good side" with the warning "if [someone] comes at me, they better ...

Couture (CR-2)
Tori Fixx Couture (CR-2) CD  (2008)

Greater Art album
CD $16.45
Round 1: IMPACT, Round 2: THE MOCHASUTRA, Round 3: REFIXX, Round 4: BLACK.OUT: Disc 1, Round 5: MARRY ME, Round 6: CODE RED.Round seven brings forth COUTURE (CR-2), a twenty-two track adventure of never-ending funk, frolicking and verbal foreplay. This is Tori Fixx today, yesterday and even yet to come. “All of my work has lead to this album”, proclaims the man known as one of the Godfathers of Out Hip-Hop music. “It’s the perfect blend of past, present and future as far as my voice, my sound, and overall production.” And that’s just being modest. COUTURE (CR-2) is doused in melodic hooks and catchy choruses, which has always been a trademark of Mr. Fixx, but here the hooks and choruses are dominating and un-forgetful with harmonies that are as rich and layered as a triple-decker German Chocolate cake. Tori has surely found new comfort in his singing voice most notably in such jams like “All Becuz”, the futuristic “Bare” and the tear jerking ballad called “Let Him Go”. Be it solo or joined by guest vocalist Lady Roth, T. Fixx is singing on nearly half of the tracks on this record much unlike his past work. It’s apparent that the phenomenon is evolving and looking to expand his audience as well as continue to mesh so many genres into a fresh on the ears, commercial sound. Classic T. Fixx can still be found on this record in such bangers like “Massive”, “Double Dutch”, “I’m The Same”, and “Hip Hop Ain’t Me” in which Tori just sticks to being a storytelling emcee with a dope beat and a mic. Guaranteed to keep old Fixx fans satisfied, but COUTURE (CR-2) is all about new territory and experimentation such as the already fan favorite, “Cowboy”. A hybrid of dance, hip-hop and country that makes for one hell of a crossover hit record for dance-floors and radio stations alike (and he’s even got a new line dance for the song). On songs like “Bare”, “Girls Play”, “Can Eye Luv U?” “He’s Gone” and the first single and playful new anthem “WOOF!” T. Fixx taps into his knowledge and skills as a disc jockey to bring forth an electro drenched, funky, hip-house sound reminiscent of the likes of Kraftwerk, Parliament/Funkadelic and Roger Troutman all the way up to Daft Punk but still keeping many of the songs between 110-116 BPMs (for all of you DJ’s out there). Yes the politics and activism is still here (“Eye Want to Know”, “I’m The Same”, “Hip Hop Ain’t Me?”). Yes the sex is still here as well (“Stunts & Shows”, “Dat Boi”, “Who Do U Want Me 2 B?”) And of course no T. Fixx album is complete without at least ONE anthem, which this time comes in the form of a jam called “DRANK!” (Just play it once and you’ll see). Add in guest appearances from MELANGE LAVONNE, DEADLEE, LAST OFFENCE, TIM’M ...
