$8.85 The whistling trill that opens the main theme to THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY is so familiar as to be a cultural touchstone. Even an abbreviated sound byte of the theme is enough to conjure images of desolate desert plains, rolling tumbleweeds, and a cowboy-booted figure standing ominously in the distance. These images come from Sergio Leone's "spaghetti" Westerns (so called because they were shot in Italy), while the sounds--created to aid Leone's existential narratives--are the work of the ...

John Barry's fifth Oscar-winning score is a profoundly moving body of music, generally (though not entirely) elegiac in tone, very much like the movie for which it was written. It's also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early/mid-'60s. The main title theme uses some of those devices -- dense, heavy string passages adjacent to trumpet calls -- but it is hardly representative of the full score. The real heart of Dances With Wolves is the pensive, tragic "John Dunbar Theme," which is far closer in spirit to Barry's music for Somewhere in Time or They Might Be Giants, films (and scores) far removed from the Bond movies. It seems as though, when Barry is asked to write music for characters that are complex and troubled (of which Bond is neither), ...

| | Pal Joey/With A Song In My Heart CD (2003) Original Soundtrack
Backgrounds For Brando Soundtrack CD music
$8.79 This two-fer CD reissue combines the contents of a couple of 1952 LPs prominently featuring Jane Froman. With a Song in My Heart was a Froman bio-pic starring Susan Hayward that was one of the more successful films of the year. Froman's life story, which turned on her survival of an airplane crash when she was going to Europe to entertain the troops during World War II and her struggle to recover afterwards, made for an emotional film, and the soundtrack album consisted of her recordings of period songs including "I'll Walk Alone," "They're Either Too Young or Too Old," and a patriotic medley. None of Alfred Newman's Oscar-winning score was included, and as such, the album is basically a Froman best-of. Its association with the film, however, assured it of success, and it topped the Billboard charts for a remarkable 25 weeks. The same year, Froman stepped into the cast recording for a Broadway revival of Pal Joey because Vivienne Segal, star of the original production and the revival, was contracted to Columbia Records while Capitol controlled rights to the cast album. (Harold Lang, who played Joey on-stage, was similarly replaced by Dick Beavers.) Froman does her best, but the resulting "cast" album is really a botched job, both because the singer lacks the smoldering appeal needed for the role and because, in any ...
