Gota Yashiki's work with other artists as a producer, drummer, and remix artist has been wide-ranging and justly praised. His solo work is a little bit more difficult to evaluate. This handy best-of makes the project a little bit easier by offering a representative overview of that work, but the basic problem remains: By what criteria should this music be judged? As an accompaniment to elevator rides and doctor's visits, it is clearly superior; the themes are original (no orchestral arrangements of "Don't Fear the Reaper" here), the mixes are expert, and the grooves are effortlessly engaging but won't distract you from that three-month-old issue of People Magazine. As smooth jazz, it's quite good: The saxophones are sweet and in-tune (don't laugh -- that's not a given), the beats are funky but polite, and the textures are rich and creamy. As dance music, it's a bust: These polite little instrumental miniatures are more likely to induce snuggling than booty shaking. As snuggling music, though, it's not bad. So call it "Muzak for cool people" and judge it on those merits, and it comes out pretty respectable. That said, this handy best-of is almost certainly all you'll ever need. ~ Rick Anderson

Best Of Gota album
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including ...

| | Doors Legacy: The Absolute Best CDs (1967)
Best Of Gota songs
$19.79 Recorded between 1967 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Jim Ladd.
Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. At two discs and 34 tracks, this is quite comprehensive for a band whose key lineup released only half a dozen albums. In addition to all the expected hits like "Light My Fire," "Hello I Love You," and "Roadhouse Blues," this compilation delves much deeper into the catalogue with fan favorites such as "Not To Touch the Earth" and "Wishful Sinful," as ...
| | Will Downing Emotions CD (2003)
Best Of Gota album
$14.09 To the untrained eye, silken-voiced Will Downing may seem merely an R&B journeyman, making solid, soulful records year after year, just on the edge of stardom. However, there has to be more to an artist whose first hit single is an update of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." And, indeed, EMOTIONS, the singer's tenth album, features a jazz undercurrent (no, not Kenny G "jazz"), sincerely channeling the spirit of Bill Withers and Al Green records past.
EMOTIONS opens with a tender jam (gutsily "for the fellas"), "A Million Ways," which asserts "making love ain't just in the bed." In this chronicle ...
| | Cyro Baptista Beat The Donkey CD (2002)
Best Of Gota CD music
$13.89 Make no mistake -- Beat the Donkey (translated from the Portuguese "Pau la Mula" as "let's go" or "let's do it") is not a reference to animal cruelty, but percussion Cyro Baptista's calling card to party. This debut recording for the group is split into fragments of small ensembles, a rotating cadre of players (a sextet at best) from many different disciplines. They range from riotous celebratory dance to multi-ethnic elements, cerebral, lighthearted, at times goofy and at other times heavy. There is no real core band, but rather a Gypsy circus loose association with Baptista clearly the madcap ringleader. Brazilian music can be the center of Beat the Donkey, but also Balkan sounds, nomadic music, rock and funk, and a festive attitude that surely appeals to summertime outdoor merrymaking. Carnival meets hard rock circus at ...

| | Critters Buggin Stampede CD (2004)
Best Of Gota songs
$10.05 For their first album in five years, the Seattle quartet continues in the instrumental jazz/electronica/funk/dub/experimental vein established on its existing catalog. Moody and eclectic but never frigid, the music succeeds by combining its diverse influences in warm, organic ways. Each track is a multi-layered microcosm of movement, and although there are plenty of danceable parts -- along with some dancefloor-clearing ones -- the album is best appreciated with headphones where all the intricacies of the tempo changes and especially the dynamic percussion can be picked out amongst the clatter. Even elements of prog -- especially early King Crimson on the pounding "Punk Rock Guilt" -- shapeshift into jazz and free form then back again with deceptive ...
