| | John Brown's Body Spirits All Around Us CD John Brown's Body Discography of CDs
A pleasant chill record of roots reggae, John Brown's Body's Spirits All Around Us presents 14 densely layered tracks from the Ithaca, NY-based ensemble. Frontman Kevin Kinsella has a knack for crafting poppy vocal hooks that he skillfully embeds within the dubby grooves (such as on "33 RPM"). The real genius of the album, though, is in the syncopated wall of sound the band creates. Synths, percussion, horns, vocals, and guitars layer together to create a rich blend. One minor complaint is that, perhaps, there is not enough low end on the disc. The band shows its experimental side on cuts like the instrumental "Instrument" (perhaps the highlight of the disc) and the almost industrial-sounding "Ambrosia." On the former, the band's thick dub percolates over a hearty seven minutes, making one wish that the band would someday devote an entire disc to this sort of exploration. ~ Jesse Jarnow

Spirits All Around Us CD music
$14.39 Listening to this disc is a vaguely disturbing experience, because this American reggae group has captured so uncannily the sound of early dancehall reggae, the kind that came out of small Jamaican recording studios in the late '70s and early '80s. Only the digitally clean production quality betrays this as a product of its decade. And hey, that's a compliment. The elastic rocksteady groove and sweet horn lines (though not the violin obbligato) of "Love Is a Fire" could have come out of Coxsone Dodd's studio in 1974, and Dodd would have been proud to release it. "This Is Not the End" wallows in a wet, reverb-heavy ambience and features an authentic "yugga-yugga-yugga-yo" chorus, then slides into an excellent dub mix. And speaking of dub, King Tubby would have killed ...

Spirits All Around Us music CDs
$13.89 It's not entirely accurate to call John Brown's Body an anachronism, but it' s not entirely inaccurate either. This brand of reggae hasn't been played by any other band in almost 20 years; it's the style usually referred to as "roots" reggae, to differentiate it from the earthier and more percussive dancehall and reggae styles that developed during the 1980s and 1990s. "Satisfaction Feeling," with its slow-skanking rock-steady rhythm, could have been written and sung in 1975; "Poor Man's Prayer," with its flying-cymbals drum style, could have come out of Bunny Lee's studio in the same year (though the album's high production standards betray both songs as modern recordings). There's even an old-fashioned ...
