Say what you will about Poison; these glamour boys are worthy of veteran status, releasing HOLLYWEIRD 15 years after their debut LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN. Poison plays homage to the gritty side of their beloved Hollywood in both "Wishful Thinkin'" and the title track. "Shooting Star," weaves a tale of a small-town girl with stars in her eyes and boasts one of the band's signature gang-vocal choruses (much in the spirit of "Fallen Angel" from OPEN UP AND SAY AHH!).
While they're not the first to cover it, Poison's take on Pete Townshend's "Squeeze Box" notches up the innuendo, making it their own. No stranger to the forefront (after leading his trio Samantha 7), notorious guitarist C.C. DeVille takes over lead vocals in the reprise of the anthemic singalong "Home." When you consider the come-and-go trends the music business has seen during Poison's history, it's an accomplishment to find a band spawned by the likes of KISS and Motley Crue still churning out their brand of sleazy, fun pop-metal while most of their contemporaries are extinct.

| | Tom Russell Hotwalker: Charles Bukowski & A Ballad For Gone America CD (2005)
Hollyweird songs
$10.09 Songwriter Tom Russell has long been possessed by the ghosts and places of history, big and small, from William Faulkner and outlaw Claude Dallas to Jack Johnson, Little Willie John and Bill Haley, from Manzanar to Begenfield. There are also dozens of nameless, faceless denizens barely hanging on to the fringes on both sides of the border, cheated endlessly by life yet becoming archetypes in the American myth of Russell's songs. Hotwalker is subtitled "Charles Bukowski and a Ballad for Gone America." This is Russell's latest conceptual work, a palette of excess lovingly offered to the heroes of his life, those that defined for him the America that has been erased from the popular psychic topography and has entered into the hallways of myth and memory. This is a record ...

$18.99 SILVERADO RECORDS TO RELEASE HAND MADE PORTRAIT, THE NEW ALBUM FROM LEGENDARY JAZZ GUITARIST CALVIN KEYS ON MAY 1, 2007On Tuesday, May 1, 2007, Silverado Records will release Oakland, CA-based jazz guitar great Calvin Keysâ newest album Hand Made Portrait. Keysâs sophomore release for the label â his critically-acclaimed label debut Calvinesque (#30 on the Jazz Week jazz charts) was released in 2005 â Hand Made Portrait is a beguiling blend of classic Broadway show tunes (Accustomed to Your Face), Great American Songbook (Iâll remember April), Brazilian bossa nova (Wave) and venerable jazz standards (Little Niles) (Good Bait) and (Naima). âThese were some of the songs that I had been playing over the years and I just wanted to go in and record them,â says Keys. âI just like these songs and I just play what I like; I play what I feel. And Iâm paying compliments to some of the greatest writers who ever lived.â Aided and abetted by drummer David Rokeach throughout and bassists Mark âHeshimaâ Williams, Jeff Chambers and Matt Montgomery on alternate tracks, the guitarist claims these songs as his own.The title of this new Calvin Keys joint alludes to both the instrument the songs are played on â Heritage Guitarsâ âhand madeâ âCalvin Keys Golden Eagle Custom model -- and his artistic raison dâetre. âTo me itâs about musical painting,â he muses. âThatâs what I do â come up with different ideas and different arrangements to evoke the poetry, use my guitar as my brush, and then paint musical portraits with my hands.â Like a gifted dauber of pigment, Keysâ Hand Made Portrait style is a collective reflection/conflation of the iconic masters who he studied under during his formative years. In this guitaristâs case, that means Hammond B3 organ gods Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, and Richard âGrooveâ Holmes, Ray Charles and Ahmad Jamal. âPeople say thatâs âold schoolâ, but I call it the real school,â he laughs. Calvin was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1943. A guitar prodigy, he had his first professional gig at the age of 14. In 1973, he got The Gig That Changed ...
