Saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis may not be a household name, but his name is spoken with reverence by other funk musicians and fans of vintage soul. A former music director for James Brown (and co-composer of such soul classics as "Cold Sweat" and "Say It Loud -- I'm Black and I'm Proud"), he collaborated with Brown and fellow J.B.'s Fred Wesley, Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker, and others to establish the parameters of modern funk. This live album finds him reunited with several of his old compadres as well as singer Fred Ross for an unabashed revival of that sound, including a number of James Brown tunes ("Pass the Peas," "I Got the Feeling," "Cold Sweat," "I Got You [I Feel Good]"). There are a couple of missteps: the cover of Bill Withers' emotionally damp "Grandma's Hands" was utterly unnecessary, and it's not at all clear why Ellis chose to take "I Got You (I Feel Good)" at half the normal tempo. But overall, this album is lots of good, sweaty, greasy, funky fun. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
Personnel: Pee Wee Ellis (vocals, tenor saxophone); Fred Wisley (vocals, trombone); Fred Ross (vocals); Mick Gaffney, Mike Hogan (guitar); Jimmy Smith (keyboards); Curtis Ohlson (bass); John Mader (drums).

Live & Funky CD music
$11.19 Personnel Sharon Jones (vocals); Binky Griptite (spoken vocals, guitar);
Anda Szilagyi (trumpet); Otis Youngblood (tenor saxophone); Jack Zapata (baritone saxophone); Earl Maxton (organ); Bosco Mann (bass); Homer Steinweiss (drums); Bugaloo Velez (congas).
It's hard to believe that Sharon Jones' debut LP is a product of the year 2002, for several reasons. Given the excellent singles she recorded for Desco beginning in the late '90s, it seems like she would have gotten the opportunity for a full-length sooner; plus, her brand of raw, heavy, hard-driving funk is such a throwback to the '70s, and she pulls it off so well, that you wonder how she could have escaped that decade without at least a few rare, classic 45s (in the vein of labelmate Lee Fields). It's not hard to believe she once made her living as a prison guard, based on the tough-as-nails, no-nonsense ...

$12.05 Lettuce is the group that began the careers of several noted "jam band" musicians: Eric Krasno of Soulive, Adam Deitch of the John Scofield Band, Adam Smirnoff of the Squad, Jeff Bhayshk of Kudu, Ryan Zoidis of Rustic Overtones, and Eric Coomes, now a Los Angeles-based producer. Outta Here is essentially a reunion project featuring these players and several special guests, including trombonist Fred Wesley, Soulive organist Neal Evans, and John Scofield himself. Toni ...

| | Phyllis Hyman Prime Of My Life CD (1991)
Live & Funky album
$7.59 Listening to Phyllis Hyman's 1991 emotional tour de force Prime of My Life is at once a happy and sad experience. Happy because it finds Hyman at a moment when she was not tortured by her inner demons and tragic because it provides an undeniable glimpse into Hyman's tortured soul and the pending suicide which would materialize four years later. Prime of My Life granted the sophisticated lady her first R&B chart-topper with the saucy "Don't Wanna Change the World," which incorporates ...

$8.99 Inevitably, any genre of music -- be it rock, R&B, rap, jazz, reggae, country, or salsa -- will have its leaders (who are the minority) as well as its followers (who are the majority). It's unrealistic to expect every artist who comes along to be a leader or an innovator; the artists who were honest-to-God innovators (Jimi Hendrix, Charlie Parker, Run-D.M.C., Bing Crosby, Kraftwerk) were the exception instead of the rule. But if you're going to be a follower ...
