Southern California's Duraluxe added pianist Frank Lenz for their 2002 album The Suitcase. Led by Christopher Colbert's shimmering guitar work and Troy Daugherty's effortless vocals, this album is more straightforwardly poppy than the band's previous efforts. Drummer Mark Emge, bassist Brian Blue, and organist Megan Morrison round out the lineup. The pop sounds on the record are borderline psychedelic, infusing Flaming Lips-like rock with Sparklehorse-like cosmic pop. The opening track, "Your Boarding Pass...," is an vocal experimental ditty. After the flamboyant pop/rock of the first real song of the disc, "Your Boarding Pass...," the mellow second and third tracks, "7ths & Minors" and "All Together Now," set the album's sails, perfectly creating a calm and peaceful tone for the rest of the disc. The latest version of their song "Hit So Hard (Winsome Version)" is more orchestral than previously, and the addition of harmonies adds a new element to the song as well. The intelligent lyrics on "For the Memory of St. Joan" and the rowdy rock of "Sometimes" are possibly the most impressive songs on the disc. The vocals on "Helium Hand of Power" are blanketed by a layer of sublime and mellow instrumentation. Richard Swift guests on piano on the track. The disc ends with the experimental track "&I-95," the opening of which closely matches the first track, before launching into song. The Suitcase was recorded at California's Green Room Studios and released on Hidden Agenda Records in 2002. ~ Stephen Cramer

Suitcase album
$7.79 Having made a name for themselves in the relatively young world of emo since emerging on the scene in 1997, The Juliana Theory made quite a splash in ascending upwards to the big leagues via LOVE, their major-label debut. With former Talking Head Jerry Harrison aboard as a producer, this Pennsylvania quintet busts out of the emo ghetto with a number of tunes cloaked in a variety of stylistic nuances. The churning chaos of "Trance" brings to mind Black Sabbath's deeper and darker side; subtle, waltz-like tempos get infused into the harmony-laden "Into The Dark," and the closing number "As It Stands" benefits from a stark arrangement marked by the use of a medieval-sounding acoustic guitar. ...

| | Damien Jurado Where Shall You Take Me? CD (2003)
Suitcase songs
$10.15 Arriving just a year after the surprisingly eclectic and electric rock of I Break Chairs, Damien Jurado's Where Shall You Take Me? is something of a return -- but not a retreat -- to the moody minimalism of albums like Ghost of David. Songs like "Amateur Night" and "Omaha" share the acoustic strumming and rustic, shuffling rhythms of his earlier work, but also have a subtly polished confidence that brings out the warmth in Jurado's singing and playing as never before. The country and folk elements always present in his music come to the fore on "Abilene" and "Window," which, with its sweet, close harmonies, borrows equally from the traditions of bluegrass and hymns. A devotional thread runs through Where Shall You Take Me?, particularly on its second half, where "I Can't Get ...

Suitcase songs
$8.59 Principally recorded at Paradise Studios and Rhinoceros Studios, Sydney, Australia; The Power Station, New York; Studio De La Grand Armee, Paris, France between 1980 and 1994.
A straight-up singles collection, plus two acceptable new tracks, GREATEST HITS may be all the INXS the casual fan requires. Only on certain albums, like 1982's SHABOOH SHOOBAH and 1984's THE SWING, did the Australian sextet have many terribly interesting songs that weren't released as singles. The late singer Michael Hutchence was a born rock star, and ...
