This two-fer from Dutton Vocalion features a pair of out of print Edmundo Ros LPs, Ros on Broadway and More Ros on Broadway, originally issued in 1958 and 1959, respectively. These 24 tracks are made up of mainly well-known compositions from such Broadway hits as South Pacific, Annie Get Your Gun, and The King and I, including "Surrey With the Fringe on Top," "Shall We Dance?," "I Love Paris," "Bewitched," and "Some Enchanted Evening." This is an enjoyable reissue from the bandleader's deleted catalog on London Phase 4 Records. ~ Al Campbell

When it comes right down to it, the music of Philip Glass is simply one of those love-it-or-hate-it propositions: most people find his signature technique (relentlessly repeating arpeggios with minimal harmonic movement and even less rhythmic variation) to be either frantically, hair-pullingly dull or mystically transcendent. So the idea behind a project like Orion seems a bit curious. Here Glass has written brief pieces designed to showcase a variety of world music traditions, including those of China, the Gambia, Brazil, Canada (in this case the Scottish-derived music of Nova Scotia), and Australia, among others. His collaborators include some fairly big names: fiddler Ashley MacIsaac, legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar, griot and kora player Foday Musa Suso, and so on. Everyone plays enthusiastically and well and the music is unfailingly pleasant, but nothing here is likely to win over those who tend toward the hair-pulling end of the spectrum of responses to Glass's music. These pieces are probably more effective in the live setting for which they were intended than they are on disc, where they generally come across as pleasant and goodheartedly multicultural, but not terribly exciting. As he often does, MacIsaac brings a special energy to the "Canada" track, and Uakti's performance on "Brazil" is also worth noting. Otherwise, this will be of interest primarily to world fusion fanatics and Glass's large cult following. ~ Rick Anderson

Currently serving as Director of Music and Organist for the First United Methodist Church of Columbus, Indiana, David Kevin Lamb is a graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.Dr. Lamb's professional credits as an organist include church music positions in Indiana and Kentucky and guest organ concert performances in Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. European performances include presentations in Austria, Germany, and, most recently, two concerts in France on the Historic Cavaille-Coll Organs in the churches of St. Augustin and La Trinite in Paris. Dr. Lamb's professional experiences include work in the realms of concert organist, choral director, church organist, singer, voice teacher, accompanist, pit player, music administrator, public school teacher, college instructor, workshop leader, clinician, and recording artist.
