This collection of the Blind Boys' early 1980s output is a wellspring of great rhythm and blues-inflected gospel, featuring the "original" line-up, which includes lead vocalist Clarence Fountain, bass vocalist Johnny Fields, and tenor George Scott. Among the highlights are the dynamite "Morning Train," with its funky breaks and galvanizing, double-time "I'm going home" finale; and the sustained high-note testifying of "Beams of Heaven." Spoken-word moments--as when baritone Olice Thomas recalls a near-fatal highway accident as a prelude to "I'll Always Be in Love with God," or the call and response of "Shackled by a Heavy Burden"--add a live-at-the-pulpit authenticity to the proceedings, making this not just of a collection of great gospel, but a bona fide spiritual event. Fans of the group's later albums will be delighted to discover this hip-shaking, soul-quaking collection. Between all the raw love and gratitude in the voices, the sweet electric guitar, muscular bass, and rollicking Hammond B-3 organ, it's got the power to heal the pain in any heart and move the devil out of any pair of feet.
Five Blind Boys Of Alabama includes: Clarence Fountain, Louis Dicks (vocals).

$10.39 Perhaps more than any other player, Rahsaan Roland Kirk embodied the entire history of not only jazz but 20th century American music in his playing. No matter which of the many horns he played (more often than not three at once), he would cut through an original composition, something from the current pop repertoire, or a jazz or R&B nugget that hadn't been heard in a while, and open the floodgates, bringing all of the other musics he knew to bear on the present selection. And Kirk was not one for excess; his humor, his fire, and his soulfulness were always ...

$16.45 FULLERMac Randall (guitar & effects)Michael Gelfand (bass)Peter Catapano (drums)After garnering praise from an array of fellow mad geniuses such as Gary Lucas, Wharton Tiers and Daniel Lanios, the New York City-based trio, Fuller have repackaged their two most recent mindbending, but tuneful albums -- 'Year of the Rat' and 'The Lotus' -- into a single CD, at single CD cost! Twice as many reasons to dive into the sonic wonderland that is Fuller.Forged in the damp, dingy basement of a former sweatshop on New York's Lower East Side during 1999, the sound of Fuller is complex, dramatic, muscular, and proudly vocal-free. The group taps into both the sonic aggression of rock and the exploratory aesthetics of jazz, but it is not a jam band. Its music is tightly composed and orchestrated, with a wide dynamic range and a strong sense of melody. Influences include the likes of Tortoise, Trans Am, and Don Caballero, but also In A Silent Way-era Miles Davis, King Crimson, Bill Frisell, Erik Satie and Thelonious Monk.If the names Mac Randall, Michael Gelfand, and Peter Catapano sound familiar, that may be because you've seen their bylines in publications like the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Musician, Salon, and Launch. Though all three have made their living as writers and editors, they separately served time in local bands for over a decade. As Fuller, they have performed Austin, TX's heralded South By South West confernece as well as major NYC clubs such as the Mercury Lounge, the Knitting Factory, CB's Lounge, and Tonic and Boston's Lizard Lounge. In 2000, Fuller recorded an EP called The Tiers Suite (named for Wharton Tiers, longtime Sonic Youth associate, friend of Fuller, and leader of the Wharton Tiers Ensemble, of which Randall is a current member and Gelfand was once a member). A collection of four separate ...
