Original Broadway Cast Li'l Abner (Orig. Cast) CD (2002)
Barnum (Original Broadway Cast Recording) Soundtrack songs Music composed by Gene De Paul. Lyrics written by Johnny Mercer.
Songwriter Johnny Mercer did not have much luck writing for Broadway, but the exception was Lil' Abner, based on the satiric Al Capp comic strip about the rural residents of Dogpatch. Mercer wrote the song lyrics to music by Gene DePaul, with whom he had worked on the movie musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. After the show opened on November 15, 1956, it became the only stage work with which Mercer was associated to turn a profit, running 693 performances. Actually, the score isn't as strong as that for one of Mercer's flops, St. Louis Woman, but it is appropriate to the subject matter. The songs "Jubilation T. Cornpone," "The Country's in the Very Best of Hands," and "Progress Is the Root of All Evil" wittily capture Capp's sense of humor and dim view of politics. There are also some attractive romantic ballads, notably "Namely You" and "Love in a Home," both of which became minor hits. Edith "Edie" Adams and Stubby Kaye lead a cast of unknowns who give their all to the show's broad comedy. A key element of Lil' Abner's success was the staging and choreography of director Michael Kidd, not available on record, although the 2002 reissue adds the main dance number, "Sadie Hawkins Day Ballet." The disc is, in fact, full of new material, including a stereo version of the "Overture" (Li'l Abner was Columbia Records' last cast album not recorded in stereo, but the label was experimenting); the previously unreleased song "What's Good for General Bullmoose"; an expanded version of the finale, "The Matrimonial Stomp"; "There's Room Enough for Us," from the 1959 soundtrack album; and pop versions of two songs cut from the score, Percy Faith's "The Way to a Man's Heart" and Rosemary Clooney's "It's a Nuisance Having You Around." ~ William Ruhlmann

Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris CD (1974)
Barnum (Original Broadway Cast Recording) Soundtrack album for sale Music and lyrics written by Jacques Brel. English lyrics translated by Eric Blau and Mort Schuman.
One of the most fascinating figures in French pop music history, singer/songwriter Jacques Brel is renowned for his overt theatricality and witty lyrics, which could range in tone from playfully bawdy to outright morbid. Though quite popular in Europe Brel's bold aesthetic eventually won a cult following in the United States, thanks to the occasional English translation and interpretation of his compositions. In 1968, New York City-based playwright Eric Blau and singer/songwriter Mort Shuman translated a large number of Brel's tunes and based their theatrical production, JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE & WELL & LIVING IN PARIS, around them. It's no surprise that many of the performances echo the work of another beloved cult musician Scott Walker, particularly since the American-born singer has interpreted dozens of Brel songs in his own distinctive, brooding velvety manner. Fans of Brel, Walker, and inventive musicals in general will appreciate this reverent and celebratory production.

Pearl Bailey / Original Broadway Cast House of Flowers CD (1955)
Barnum (Original Broadway Cast Recording) Soundtrack CD music Music composed by Harold Arlen. Lyrics written by Truman Capote.
This is part of Columbia Records "Broadway Masterworks" series.
House of Flowers, based on a celebrated Truman Capote novella about love in a brothel in the West Indies, failed as a Broadway musical, running only 165 performances from its opening on December 30, 1954. But the cast album, featuring Pearl Bailey, Diahann Carroll, and Juanita Hall, turned the show into a Broadway legend because it preserved one of Harold Arlen's best scores. Legendary backstage arguments among the principals may have resulted in a production that didn't work in the theater, but you wouldn't have known that from the music, which included the lovely "A Sleepin' Bee," "Two Ladies in de Shade of de Banana Tree" (performed by Ada Moore and Enid Mosier), and "I Never Has Seen Snow." The irrepressible Bailey is really just her usual extroverted self, breaking out of character in "One Man (Ain't Quite Enough)" to announce that there hasn't been time to write the "ad libs" she was supposed to be singing at one point in the song. The young Carroll, in contrast, is delicate and sensitive as the ingénue. Capote's lyrics are serviceable, but Arlen's music, typically bluesy, takes on Caribbean elements and works as a whole piece as much as it does in its individual songs. As a result, House of Flowers did not become one of those forgotten Broadway flops; it was remembered as one of Broadway's legendary failures in which great talents did not mange to create a masterpiece that could have been. The cast album was the record of that elusive masterpiece and remains a classic. ~ William Ruhlmann

Original Broadway Cast Thoroughly Modern Millie (Original Broadway Cast) CD (2002)
Barnum (Original Broadway Cast Recording) Soundtrack buy CD music The theatrical tale of a '20s Flapper gal, THOROUGHLY MODERN MINNIE already had a place in the hearts of many 21st-century folks due to the version featuring Julie Andrews singing atop an orchestra conducted by no less than Andre Previn. This newer take on the classic musical, however, is full of just as much verve as any previous staging. How else could it have taken jaded New York theater audiences by storm? Moving full circle from the plaint "What Do I Need With Love?" to the revelatory "I'm in Love With Someone," Millie's voyage is one that can be enjoyed equally as well on this disc as it can on the stage.
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Musical Show Album.

Original Studio Cast Miss Spectacular (The Concept Album) CD (2002)
Barnum (Original Broadway Cast Recording) Soundtrack album for sale Musical theater songwriter Jerry Herman enjoyed his last Broadway hit with La Cage aux Folles in 1983, but he has kept writing, and Miss Spectacular is presented here as a concept album, no doubt with the intention of mounting a stage production in the future. The recording is not technically a studio-cast album, since the songs are not sung by a few performers meant to portray the actual characters, but instead by seven different performers in what amounts to a various-artists recording. It's an accomplished bunch, including several actor-singers associated with the musical theater, notably Faith Prince, Christine Baranski, and Debbie Gravitte (the only person to sing more than one song), as well as performers more associated with the concert stage, such as Steve Lawrence and Michael Feinstein. The synopsis included in the CD booklet tells the story of a Midwestern girl who goes to Las Vegas to seek fame and fortune, specifically by entering a contest sponsored by the Hotel Spectacular. Herman has penned some entertaining songs, including "Las Vegas," which Lawrence handles well, gamely including a lyric that refers to himself and wife Eydie Gorme, and the comic "Where in the World Is My Prince?," sung with appropriate humor by Faith Prince. The score sounds like old-fashioned show music, which perhaps doesn't matter in terms of a stage version, since Broadway often seems to be in its own unique time warp. But the songs don't approach in wit or tunefulness those of previous Herman shows such as Hello, Dolly! and Mame. Still, theater fans should be happy that Herman is still working and willing to add this late, minor effort to their collections of his shows. ~ William Ruhlmann
