The first two Weather Report albums to feature Jaco (and two of their very best) were combined on to a single cassette, containing the smash hit "Birdland". If cassette was your format, this was a great way to pick up two great albums, but it is now out of print. ~ Sean Westergaard
The shifts in Weather Report's personnel come fast and furious now, with Narada Michael Walden and Chester Thompson as the drummers, Alex Acuna and Don Alias at the percussion table, and Alphonso Johnson giving way to the mighty, martyred Jaco Pastorius. It is interesting to hear Pastorius expanding the bass role only incrementally over what the more funk-oriented Johnson was doing at this early point -- that is, until "Barbary Coast," where suddenly Jaco leaps athletically forward into the spotlight. Joe Zawinul or just Zawinul, as he preferred to be billed -- contributed all of side one's compositions, mostly Third World-flavored workouts except for "Cannon Ball," a touching tribute to his ex-boss Cannonball Adderley (who had died the year before). Shorter, Pastorius, and Johnson split the remainder of the tracks, with Shorter now set in a long-limbed compositional mode for electric bands that would serve him into the 1990s. While it goes without saying that most Weather Report albums are transition albums, this diverse record is even more transient than most, paving the way for WR's most popular period while retaining the old sense of adventure. ~ Richard S. Ginell

Infectious Grooves and Exotic Melodies Weather Report's Black Market was an incredibly important album in the history of jazz. The most important contribution it gave to the music world was the electric fretless bass playing of Jaco Pastorius. His funky, R&B grooves on "Barbary Coast," and his singing, beautiful style on "Cannonball" demonstrated the versatility of a bass in the right hands. Even without Jaco's contributions, however, this is a great album, and possibly one of the best strict jazz albums by Weather Report. While Heavy Weather yielded the group's most famous and memorable tunes, it was not a true jazz album; rather, it was more of a fusion/world/dance album. Black Market, while borrowing heavily from the elements of fusion and funk music, was still a very jazz oriented album. The ballad form was strictly adhered to in "Cannonball," "Gibraltar" contained Coltranesque idioms, and even the title track, while borrowing a funk rhythmic structure, featured a full blown, strictly jazz oriented solo by one of music's most brilliant improvisers of all time, Wayne Shorter. It was Shorter's and Zawinul's combined compositional contributions that greatly added to the consistency of this album. Out of all the Weather Report albums, this is the most consistent one to listen to. It is also one of the group's most innovate albums in terms of utilizing timbre. On a final note, the phenomenal drummer/percussionist Alex Acuna made his debut on this album. Eventually, him and Jaco would create one of the greatest rhythm sections in modern music as Weather Report's popularity grew. Submitted by jasdecristofaro (Asheville, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Weather Report at their best This is a great CD, better than "Heavy Weather" or anything done after it. Is it jazz? Is it fusion? Who cares! It's great music. Every track on this 38 minute CD is excellent, but you will not be hearing this in an elevator or on those awful "light jazz" radio stations. This is real music!
