Nashville Pussy: Blaine (vocals, guitar); Ruyter (guitar); Katielynn (bass); Jeremy (drums). Recorded at Barrick Recordings, Glasgow, Kentucky. Personnel: Blaine Cartwright (vocals, guitar); Ruyter Suys (guitar); Jeremy Thompson (drums). Recording information: Barrick Recordings, Glasgow, KY. Photographer: Mike McClure. Arranger: Nashville Pussy. Five years into their career, Nashville Pussy are showing no signs of maturing -- which is great news for the fans. Say Something Nasty is cut from the same cloth as its two predecessors, fusing garage-style AC/DC boogie with a gleefully unrepentant embrace of white-trash decadence. Although most of the songs are little more than a place to hang gimmicky catch phrases like "You Give Drugs a Bad Name" and "Keep on Fucking," the entire Nashville Pussy package, taken as a whole, is satisfying just the same. Lead guitarist Ruyter Suys emerges as the group's secret weapon here -- her Angus Young-style fretboard scrabbling raises the excitement level considerably -- while the absence of original bassist Corey Parks is virtually unnoticeable on record (her physical presence and on-stage antics were Parks' most memorable contributions to the band). Amidst all the decidedly unmelodic noisemaking, "Here's to Your Destruction" -- smartly placed in the middle of the record -- provides a refreshing change of pace, featuring a heavy-handed take on Lynyrd Skynyrd-style Southern boogie. Gloriously dumb fun. ~ Andy Hinds With such riff-rock merchants as Aerosmith, AC/DC, and Guns N' Roses taking extended periods of time between albums by the late '90s, a whole new wave of disciples began to emerge in the U.S., including Buckcherry and Nashville Pussy. The latter band never flirted with mainstream success like the former did, but have definitely carved a niche for themselves with their over-the-top stage show and down 'n' dirty approach--as proven by the group's third release overall (and first for new label, Artemis), 2002's SAY SOMETHING NASTY. Nashville Pussy continues to specialize in hard-hitting and anything-but-subtle heavy metal, as evidenced by such scorchers as "Gonna Hitchhike Down to Cincinnati and Kick the Shit Outta Your Drunk Daddy," "You Give Drugs A Bad Name," and "Beat Me Senseless." For those who remember the golden age, there's even a rowdy yet faithful reading of Rick Derringer's '70s party- rock anthem "Rock N' Roll Hoochie Coo."CMJ (6/02, p.19) - "...Bottom line: no one is currently making rowdy bar rock as good as this band and that's why we love them..." Another Good Album Say Somethin' Nasty isn't Nashville Pussy's best album, as there are some filler tracks toward the end, but there are definitely some NP classics here, like the title track, "Keep On F*ckin'" "Here's To Your Destruction," and of course, the unforgettably-named "I'm Gonna Hitchhike Down To Cincinnati, Etc., Etc." Musically, it continues the trend of veering away from the band's hardcore-punkish roots, into a more trailer-park AC/DC direction. This album evokes blurry memories of being holed up in my college apartment that summer, dealing with no air conditioning, summer classes, woman troubles and a LOT of beer, and I blared this CD incessantly. Say Something Nasty
$11.59 Recorded in 1967 & 1968. Liner Note Author: Big Boy Pete. Recording information: 1966-1968. Unknown Contributor Role: Big Boy Pete. Though he has not yet become a household name -- perhaps because he never spent time in an asylum, homeless shelter, or halfway house and because he actively continued to make and promote his music -- Pete Miller's body of work deserves the same sort of devoted coterie of enthusiasts as other great eccentric acid mavericks like Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson, and Skip Spence. The Margetson Demos is still more evidence of Big Boy Pete's incomparable, fascinatingly bizarre vision. And his was no cheeky "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" punnery but the real "L.S.D." deal. The compilation features just what the title says: 23 unpolished demo recordings made by Miller alone at his home studio on Margetson Avenue on the outskirts of Norwich between the Technicolor years of 1966 and 1968, and released here for the first time. Miller himself confesses that many of these songs, to say nothing of the rough-hewn ...
