Svend Asmussen's career has unfortunately been overshadowed by phenomenal success of Stephane Grappelli. With Grappelli's death in 1997, there is no reason why this swinging violinist shouldn't achieve wider recognition, particularly with this excellent studio date. Accompanied by guitarist Jacob Fischer, bassist Jesper Lundgaard, and drummer Aage Tanggaard, Asmussen's diverse program is full of surprises. The understated treatment of "How Deep Is the Ocean" passes the solo spotlight continuously among the string players, while Fletcher Henderson's "Down South Camp Meeting," a piece pretty much overlooked since the heyday of Benny Goodman, swings like mad. A brisk "Hallelujah," powered by Tanggaard's brushwork, is easily the most adventurous track. "Sermon for Stuff," though obviously dedicated to the late violinist Stuff Smith, is a slow waltz that has a bit of a reverential air to it. The CD also ranges from Eubie Blake's "Memories of You" to classical composer Edvard Grieg's "Jeg Elsker Dig" and the Jewish melody "Shalom Elechem." Asmussen is also a delight as a composer, contributing the joyful "Silly Shuffle." Swing fans should pick up this disc without hesitation. ~ Ken Dryden

Still Fiddling album
$13.85 There are times when you listen to this recording and, if you close your eyes, you would think you were listening to Susannah McCorkle. That is how powerful Dena DeRose can be. For this, her third release for Sharp Nine Records, the vocalist continues to dazzle with her sensuous voice and confident style. Once again, she assembles a strong team to accompany her, including drummer Matt Wilson, vibist Joe Locke, and Jim Rotundi (on a couple of tracks). When DeRose is at her best (as she is on several tracks), she is as good a singer as there is. Her "Day in Day Out," taken up-tempo, hearkens to the great vocalists of years past. DeRose gets inside the lyrics, and with a slight vibrato to end her phrases and a luxurious tone, she can be absolutely commanding. Perhaps because she was first a jazz pianist and only became a vocalist afterwards, her phrasing as a singer is immaculate. Her strong piano soloing is a pleasure, too. There are a couple of numbers not quite up to snuff, but overall, DeRose is a singer who packs a bang, and this CD is further evidence of her development. ...

Still Fiddling music CDs
$31.55 Recorded live at the Hollywood Empire, Hollywood, California in February 1949.
Duke Ellington recorded a series of radio transcriptions during an extended engagement at the Hollywood Empire for Jubilee and Just Jazz, the source of the material for this compilation. As well-recorded as these performances are, an egomaniac announcer spoils several tracks by insisting on introducing every soloist in the midst of the actual performances. In spite of this irritating occurrence, the Ellington band is well recorded and in top form, in spite of the decline of most other big bands during this period, as the numerous strikes initiated by union despot James Petrillo helped kill the popularity of instrumental jazz. A good deal of the material consists of lesser known Ellington originals that were dropped from the band book not long after this time frame, though there are plenty of hits as well. Ray Nance steals the show with his vamping vocal in "Tulip or Turnip" (no wonder he was nicknamed "Floorshow") and his signature trumpet ...
