The jokes come fast and furious as Topper attempts to clear his family name while completing his mission despite the absurdity going on around him, and the spoofs are not limited to TOP GUN; DANCES WITH WOLVES and THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS also receive their due! Lloyd Bridges turns in a hilarious performance as the accident prone and eccentric Admiral Tug Benson, and Cary Elwes plays Topper's sleazy rival to perfection. Presented by Twentieth Century Fox in association with Peter V. Miller Investment Corp.
The flying sequences were directed by Richard T. Stevens, who also supervised the flight scenes in "Top Gun" and "Fire Birds."
The aircraft carrier on which the movie takes place is actually a wooden deck built on the edge of a cliff at a deserted Marineland facility. Filmmakers shot the film at an angle that made the deck look like a ship at sea.
"Hot Shots!" features spoofs of many other movies, including "Nine 1/2 Weeks," "Superman," "The Fabulous Baker Boys," "Top Gun," "An Officer and a Gentleman," and "Gone with the Wind."
Shooting began January 10, 1991; completed April 11. Filmed in and around Los Angeles. Recorded in a THX Sound System Theater. Color by CFI; prints by DeLuxe.
"Hots Shots!" produced a sequel: "Hot Shots! Part Deux" (1993).
The $9.98 VHS version has been released under the "Twentieth Century Fox Selections" label.

Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker--of AIRPLANE! and NAKED GUN fame--wrote and directed this genre-hopping slapstick juggernaut which lampoons World War II spy films and Elvis movies, making many other satirical stops along the way. East Germany is planning a cultural festival, and invites rock-and-roll singer Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) (but only after Leonard Bernstein can't make it). The festival, however is a mere distraction so that the Germans can launch a secret attack on a submarine fleet without being detected. Kelsey Grammar plays a wayward Navy officer, Tom Dodge, who is notorious throughout the Navy for having responded to a close call involving a Russian submarine by getting drunk and tattooing "welcome aboard" on an unmentionable appendage. He gets assigned by Admiral Winslow (Rip Torn) to command his own submarine; unfortunately, this sub is a rusting 1958 diesel model that the Navy wants to engage in war games to find out if it could inflict any damage. The assumption is, this sub is comparable to those the Russians are selling to renegade Iraqi and Libyan commanders, who might use them on suicide missions against the US.

Tyler Perry follows up his DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN with more of his unique fusion of soapy melodrama, poetry, spirituality, romance, and raucous humor based on his popular stage play. This time around, the drama centers on a pair of half-sisters struggling to overcome the oppression of their materialistic mother (Lynn Whitfield).
