Is This My World songs
$11.49 FRANCES THE MUTE, the highly anticipated follow-up to the Mars Volta's stunning debut, DE-LOUSED IN THE COMATORIUM, finds the band's masterminds, Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (both formerly of At the Drive-In), diving further into their bizarre, unique sonic aesthetic. Here various forms of Latin music merge with ambient passages, jazzy interludes, and fierce progressive rock. The Latin influence, in fact, is more evident than ever, with Bixler Zavala often alternating between Spanish and English lyrics, and full-on salsa sections providing a melodic respite from ...
| | Prurient Black Vase CD (2005)
Is This My World album
$12.19 Pitched somewhere between S&M fests -- a chunk of the album art might as well be Merzbow approximations if not direct outtakes -- and instrumental abuse that will prompt tinnitus checks while any dogs in the area dance wildly about, Black Vase shows that it just needs a day for Prurient to do what it does. Quite literally -- the whole album was recorded at a one-day session, with sole Prurient member Dominick Fernow occasionally helped by engineer Kris Lapke on drums and related beats. "Roman Shower" demonstrates that it's not only possible to create "ambient" music that irritates, but that even at low volume high-pitched squeals are just plain obnoxious -- and that to keep it going for 15 minutes is as perfect a way to find out just who will have the patience to listen to the rest of the album and who will run away screaming. At least after a while he breaks into extended periods of more conventional if frenetic feedback buzz, so by the time his anguished vocals appear at the end one can assume it's black metal without the beats and riffs. In contrast "Silent Mary" is almost power pop, though not many would call a song with near indeterminable lyrics, nervous squelchy drum hits, and sheets of trebly feedback and distortion ear candy power pop -- still, it does show how "noise" as concept even has its own rules and limits, and how aiming for catchiness can show them up. From there ...
| | Hospitals I've Visited The Island Of Jocks And Jazz CDs (2005)
Is This My World CD music
$12.95 Following up a covers EP with a second album of all-original songs, the Hospitals embrace the noise-via-Load Records aesthetic through, on the face of it, expected ways. Unconventional/"ugly" mixes, the blunt art-yet-not cover art and design, aggro-spacticism, and so forth. But the flip side of the noise approach has always been a sometimes subliminal fascination with silence and space as the counterpart, and that element, plus a similarly low-key catchiness, is what makes this album stand out a bit from the crowd. Adam Stonehouse's drumming is often a massively rumbling rampage but is rarely messy, but it's his singing that's arguably the band's secret weapon. Often swathed in reverb, he sings but most of the time doesn't scream, sounding more like a bemused, slightly stoned observer instead of trying to drown out or compete with the sheer racket created by himself and guitarists Ned Meiners and Rob Enbom. "Olympic Ghost" is a good example -- the piercing feedback and monstrous riffs are (intentionally excruciating), but Stonehouse sounds almost calm, a contrast not all that far removed from a number of early songs ...
| | Chillin' At The Playboy Mansion CDs (2003)
Is This My World music CDs
$10.95 For Chillin' at the Playboy Mansion, the first chillout record released by the men's magazine with discriminating tastes but questionable motives, downbeat specialist Chris Coco took over the Playboy DJ booth from disco don Dimitri From Paris (who moved on after two Playboy-related mixes). Coco, the man behind the respected BBC radio show The Blue Room, is a perfect choice for a downtempo mix volume, even more of a taste-maker than Dimitri as well as a man with a broader range of favorites. And difficult as it is to imagine the sublime ambient pop of Ulrich Schnauss being enjoyed by most Playboy readers, this one rates far above the dozens of similar post-club collections cluttering the stores. Coco was fortunately given a free hand with the compiling, so if those looking for the next volume of Ultra Chill are disappointed at the lack of Zero 7, at least they'll be soothed by Coco's excellent selector and mixer capabilities. He balances a few familiar downbeat names (Tosca, Thievery Corporation, dZihan & Kamien, FC ...
