Whitney Houston I Look To You CD  (2009)

Emotions album
CD $10.69  3.9 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
Despite her star having lost some of its luster in the 2000s, Whitney Houston is still regarded as a benchmark for modern singers of all stripes (from soulful divas to would-be pop idols). Almost seven years in the making, 2009's I LOOK TO YOU marks a music industry homecoming for the singer. Supported by a mob of A-list producers and songwriters including Diane Warren, David Foster, R. Kelly, Alicia Keys, and many more, Houston's vocals are in fine form on material ranging ...

Emotions CD music
CD $9.75  Top 500 Audio Samples
Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks. A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords and busy percussion. T.I.P. featuring Beanie Sigel offers "2 Glock 9's," one of the soundtrack's most rugged grooves, a minimal, stripped-down drum break that stutters and skids backwards and forwards over a Notorious BIG vocal sample and is easily the eeriest track on the album. The only light relief is provided by Too $hort's "Pimp Sh*t," a humorous foray into playa politics. The title track's perennially recognizable hi-hat and wah-wah guitar intro, interlocking horn/string parts, and smooth, proto-rap verses conjure the name SHAFT as surely as a snake-charmer's incantation. It also conjures the name of Isaac Hayes--the songwriter, arranger, musician, and producer responsible for the phenomenally successful soundtrack to the landmark 1971 Blaxploitation film. Hayes's status as a key player in the Stax/Volt soul empire, and as a solo artist of considerable renown, went through ...

Don't let the title fool you; after listening to The Only Doo-Wop Collection You'll Ever Need, you'll definitely want more. This is a good starting point for the curious, since all the basics are here in the original hit versions: "The Great Pretender," "Earth Angel," "I Only Have Eyes for You," "Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight," and, thrown in for good measure, a few tracks that even vocal group scholars wouldn't mind hearing again by the Marvelows, the Duprees, the Jive Five, and the Earls. While this is an excellent primer, the best representation of vocal group harmonies ...

DVD $14.79  5 stars Top 500
The first of its kind, this DVD is expected to quickly become a Collectors item to be cherished by thousands of fans for years to come. Unlike many groups who'd broken through in the 70s and 80s, The Whispers music was unaffected by the onslaught of disco and Rap; they were neither old wave nor new wave, they were just The Whispers. You will now be able to enjoy the Whispers in the comfort of your home while they sooth you, rock you, and mesmerize you ...

The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs  (2009)

Emotions album
CD $15.49  Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits as "One." We don't get to "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" until halfway through the second disc, and this jumbled, almost haphazard sequencing is a little disconcerting since it appears to follow no true rhyme or reason. Nevertheless, scattershot is still plenty entertaining when the music is as good as this, and this does have all the Bee Gees' big hits, plus live versions of songs they gave to others, so it's a good, swift way to get all this stuff at once -- at least for those ...

Donny Hathaway Collection CD  (1990)

Emotions CD music
CD $8.09  4.9 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The Ghetto," his live cover of "What's Going On"), but not before haunted material like "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and "Giving Up." Admittedly, his duets with Flack are among the best recordings of his career, ranging from the depressed ("Where Is the Love") to the atmospheric ("The Closer I Get to You") to the downright driving ("Back Together Again"). But A Donny Hathaway Collection neglects far too much material from his two greatest solo albums, 1970s Everything Is Everything ...

ITS HOT!!! There really ain't much else to be said. Whenever U Ready is a hit featuring Soldier, Mista Kista and J-Bird. That boy Soldier got thunder! Mista Kista got flow that rivals any rapper out there and J-Bird, well she just sound sexier than a motha..... and once the Dj's at these radio stations get a hold of it, they're going to play it and play it and play it. It's going to get all the club hoppers hopping out of their seats to find that fine one to grove with. This CD is what you need, it's like shade in the summer and heat in the winter. Stupidity
Bad Manners Stupidity CD  (2003)

Emotions music CDs
CD $11.39
Wearing the term stupidity as a badge of honor, Buster Bloodvessel and his ever-changing cast of Bad Manners members enter the millennium with this collection of new songs recorded over the past few years. Although they've sounded more exciting in the past, this release certainly has a lot going for it. How can you fault an album that kicks off with "Fatman" (sung to the tune of the Batman theme)? Then again, the second track is a lackluster cover of "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" that should have been better thought out before it was recorded. "Happy" picks up the pace again, sounding as invigorating as the band did back during its commercial heyday in the early '80s. "What Ya Gonna Do" sounds like a Judge Dread outtake (it could actually be a Judge Dread track, but it's hard to tell since there are no song credits listed anywhere). "I'm a Mummy" and "Way Out Mummy" are good fun. "Tossin" is as tender as Bloodvessel has ever been, and is a standout track. The Specials' "Do Nothing" gets a rocking rave-up here, and proves that you can't ruin a great song (not that they try to). Though not all of the 16 tracks are winners, this is another fine album of new material from a band that has always been sorely overlooked. Too bad the production value is not as consistent as they deserve, but at least they're still releasing new stuff. ~ Steve "Spaz" Schnee Bad Manners: Simon Cuell (vocals, guitar); Buster Bloodvessel (vocals); Louis Cook (guitar, keyboards); Tony "Treacle" Richardson (saxophone); Trevor Irving, Chris Bull (trumpet); Warren Middleton (trombone); Dave Welton (bass trombone); Rickesh Macwana (keyboards); John Thompson , Lee Thompson (bass guitar); Carlton Hunt (drums, percussion); Mark Harrison (drums).
