Spanning the divide between some early reggae he produced during the late '60s (the Bleechers) and his more contemporary solo work from the '80s, Trojan Upsetter Box Set frames Lee "Scratch" Perry in a varied set of choice and often obscure vocal, dub, and DJ sides. Perry was adept in each style, lending his idiosyncratic and spookily roots-heavy touch to cuts by Junior Byles, Bob Marley, the Stingers, U-Roy, Jah Lloyd, and the Congos. And that's not to forget his own unearthly turns at the mic, including "Sipreano" and latter-day confessional "I Am a Madman." This three-disc bargain roundup has all of these highlights and performers, as well as plenty of fine instrumentals by Perry's early house band, the Upsetters; some funk-inspired musings from DJ Dave Barker; and, of course, more inimitable work by the fantasy-friendly boss himself. A primer that does stretch a bit too far in the name of all-inclusiveness, Trojan Upsetter Box Set still succeeds as a potent and fitting tribute to this singular Jamaican son. ~ Stephen Cook

| | Carpenters Live In Japan CD (1975) Japan
Trojan Upsetter Box Set songs
$49.89 The Carpenters never released a concert album in America, so this pricey double disc from Osaka, Japan, has been a choice import among serious fans for many years. The show opens with a fair medley comprising "Superstar" and "Rainy Days and Mondays." Other numbers include "Goodbye to Love," "Top of the World," and "Help" (which comes off better and more sincere here than it did in the duo's studio version, ...

| | Big Youth Screaming Target CD (1973) Bonus Tracks
Trojan Upsetter Box Set music CDs
$10.19 This reggae classic, long heralded as a cornerstone of the DJ genre, was remastered and reissued in 2006. Along with U-Roy, Big Youth was one of the most influential DJs on the Jamaican scene in the 1970s, helping to develop and popularize the tradition of singers "toasting" over records (a tradition that bears a direct lineage to dancehall and rap). Big Youth's 1973 debut SCREAMING TARGET has the passionate vocalist espousing conscious themes over smartly produced roots reggae rhythms in a way that sounds as fresh decades later as it did upon its original release. The reissue contains 14 bonus tracks and crisply remastered sound.
Big Youth's 1973 debut is one of the seminal albums of Jamaican DJ music. Building on the groundbreaking innovations of '60s toasters like U Roy, Big Youth changed the face of DJ-ing in the '70s with his relaxed, conversational style and the politically charged themes he premiered on SCREAMING TARGET. The shrieks that kick off the title track command the listener's attention immediately, and belie Big Youth's jazzy, ...

| | Willie Williams Comet Ride CD (2007)
Trojan Upsetter Box Set CD music
$13.85 The fact that saxophonist Willie Williams is from Philadelphia, combined with the cool, retro, space graphics and the title Comet Ride, might lead some to expect a Sun Ra-style space-jazz freak-out. But while there's an adventurous feel to this trio set, the longtime T.S. Monk sideman keeps to the tonal side of modern jazz throughout. In fact, after the spirited title track, the album settles into a fairly placid groove for its first half, following the lovely, floating "Tenor Ballet" with a pair of post-bop ballads, the gently melodic "I'm Misunderstood" and the slightly more outside "Three Generations," that strongly recall John Coltrane's late-'50s work with Monk. The feisty "Freedom Suite" kicks off the more up-tempo second half of this double-album-length set; not the Sonny Rollins masterpiece of the same title, this powerful 15-minute workout marries Eddie Harris' "Freedom ...
