| | Sex Pistols Jubilee: The Best Of CD - Import Sex Pistols Discography of CDs
JUBILEE is an excellent Sex Pistols collection that brings together work from their landmark NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS album with bonus tracks, live recordings, and three videos.
The problem is the legacy. Boiled down to its essentials, it's not even one album -- it's a series of singles, buttressed by a handful of songs scattered among the lone album, singles and demos. It's enough to help support the legend, or at least keep the myth alive, but as music, it can sound bloated and tedious, hardly sounding like the epochal music it allegedly is. That's largely because the Sex Pistols were only partially about music. Sure, Johnny Rotten's snarl and the bludgeoning chords (despite their reputation, the Pistols never really played fast, it just occasionally sounded that way) counted for something, but so did the attitude, the appearance, and the timing. Appearing at the silver jubilee of the Queen, the Sex Pistols pissed all over that celebration with their scabrous "God Save the Queen," causing something truly dangerous, if only for a minute. A moment later, Johnny Rotten left the band, manager Malcolm McLaren brought in former train-robber Ronnie Biggs for a series of awful singles, Sid Vicious allegedly killed his girlfriend and then offed himself, and the Sex Pistols' story ended, only to be turned into farce and vaudeville through countless bios, bad stories, bad reissues, tacky T-shirts, and an ill-advised reunion or two, the second of which happened in 2002, on the Golden Jubilee. To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Pistols and, of course, 50 years of the Queen, a new round of reissues was hauled out, with the three-disc The Box Set being the figurative crown jewel, and the single-disc Jubilee being the hits collection. Theoretically, both are good ideas -- a box containing everything, a disc containing the essentials -- yet they're both executed poorly. Of the two, Jubilee is the worse, because it is saddled with a bunch of Biggs material and solo recordings, all of which are technically singles, yet aren't part of the legacy that includes "No Feelings," "Bodies," and "Problems," all absent here (don't worry -- there are three versions of "Pretty Vacant" instead, including a live cut from 1996! Hooray!). Even if you're an advocate of Sid's "My Way" or "Something Else" -- and even if you take some pleasure out of the Tenpole Tudor-esque goofiness of "Friggin' in the Riggin'" -- you'll have to admit that this ain't the essentials, nor a celebration of the Sex Pistols at their peak, even if technically has the singles. There are a couple of songs not on Bollocks that would work well on a compilation with the highlights from that album, but that compilation still hasn't been made -- and Jubilee could have been that disc, which makes its failure all the more disappointing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Import only compilation features 14 classic tracks along with three enhanced tracks. Highlights include, 'God Save The Queen', 'Anarchy In The UK', and 'Pretty Vacant'. EMI.

| | Chris Stamey Travels In The South CD (2004)
Jubilee: The Best Of
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the ...

| | Revere, Paul & The Raiders Kicks! The Anthology 1963-1972 CD (2005)
Jubilee: The Best Of
$17.75 Paul Revere & the Raiders didn't have an especially high perceived hipness quotient by the time their run as hitmakers came to a close in the mid-'70s, thanks to their revolutionary war costumes, their near-constant presence on television, and their goofy sense of humor. Then again, it might have been hipper to like Kansas or Emerson, Lake & Palmer by that point, but how many folks listen to them of their own volition today? Slap Kicks! The Anthology 1963-1972 into your CD player and you'll get 77 minutes of high quality proof that the Raiders and their music have truly stood the test of time -- this is prime quality American rock & roll, replete with killer hooks, tough guitars, and high attitude vocals. While garage rock enthusiasts have come around to the virtues of the Raiders in recent years, ...
| | Aretha Franklin Live At The Fillmore West CD (2006)
Jubilee: The Best Of
$7.59 Recorded live at Fillmore West, San Francisco, California on February 5 and 7, 1971. Originally released on Atlantic (7205). Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
When Aretha Franklin recorded 1971's LIVE AT FILLMORE WEST, she was backed by a group of veteran session musicians on a mix of popular interpretations along with some of her trademark numbers. Opening with Otis Redding's "Respect," Franklin made Stephen Stills' "Love The One You're With" her own with the help of Billy Preston's joyous organ playing while Bread's saccharine "Make It With You" was injected with a healthy shot of sexy sassiness.
Aretha Franklin's underrated piano playing and a healthy display of her gospel roots make FILLMORE one of the more special recordings in Lady Soul's vast canon. Franklin's skill on the eighty-eights particularly shines on her swinging treatment of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" and the jubilant "Don't Play That Song." Franklin also plays electric piano on "Dr. Feelgood," and from this point on she turns Bill Graham's hall into a Baptist church. Between the call-and-response of her background singers and King Curtis' skillful band-leading/saxophone playing, Franklin's high point came when she brought Ray Charles out for the reprise of the testimonial "Spirit In The Dark" followed by the uplifting "Reach Out And Touch (Somebody's Hand)."
