$14.75 | | The Best Of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere CD (2007)
Mozart: String Quartets
$10.39 Issued in 2007, this Andrea Bocelli collection presents many of the Italian classical/pop-crossover artist's most memorable vocal performances. Highlights of the compilation include "Sogno" and "Because We Believe," tracks that fully reveal Bocelli's emotive and resonant voice, as well as duets with Celine Dion ("The Prayer," a delicate ballad) and Sarah Brightman (the wistful "Time to Say Goodbye"). While VIVERE may be a bit too concise for diehard Bocelli fans, it serves as a perfect introduction to the beloved singer.
Classical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli's first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly a decade-and-a-half after he made his album debut in 1994, The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere includes many of his best-known songs plus five new recordings exclusive to this compilation. His international breakthrough album, Romanza (1997), is well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Sarah Brightman on "Time to Say Goodbye." His most successful album, the classical crossover follow-up effort Sogno (1999), is likewise well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Céline Dion on "The Prayer." Later albums Cieli di Toscana (2001) and Amore (2006) are also represented with a couple inclusions on The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere. The five new recordings exclusive to Vivere include "La Voce del Silenzio"; "Dare to Live (Vivere)," a duet with Italian pop star Laura Pausini; "A Te," which features Kenny G on saxophone; "Io Ci Sarň," a David Foster co-write that features Lang Lang on piano; and "Bellissime Stelle." While many of songs compiled on Vivere are no doubt already familiar (if not overly familiar) to Bocelli fans, especially those from Romanza and Sogno, the new recordings are substantial enough to make this compilation a rewarding listening experience for fans regardless of its redundancies. As for neophytes, Vivere is an ideal introduction to Bocelli's classical crosso

$13.25 | | To The Soul: Thomas Hampson Sings The Poetry Of Walt Whitman CD (1997) Reissue
Mozart: String Quartets
$8.99 This recording includes readings by Thomas Hampson of Walt Whitman's poems "One's self I sing," "The mystic trumpeter," "I hear it was charged against me" and "Song of myself."
This recording received a 1998 "Critic's Choice" award from Gramophone
TO THE SOUL is a collection centered on a poet rather than a composer. Walt Whitman's words have inspired over a thousand song settings, whose range is suggested here. Towering behind them all is the figure of Whitman himself, the excited voice of an emergent nation, champion of individual freedom and spirituality, lover of nature, at once the most public and personal of poets. Thomas Hampson has chosen an intriguing recital, filled with names both familiar and obscure.
Among the rarities is the quotationally evocative "Ethiopia Saluting the Colors" by Henry Thacker Burleigh - a student of Dvorák and one of the first conservatory-trained African American composers. The program also includes the provocatively plain setting of "As I Watched the Ploughman Ploughing" by Philip Dalmas, for whom we have not even a birth date. There are contributions from Ralph Vaughan Williams, Paul Hindemith, Ned Rorem and even Kurt Weill, but the highlight is Leonard Bernstein's "To What You Said," a moving statement culled from an unpublished Whitman letter and one of the great American art songs. Hampson sings throughout with the art which conceals art, beautiful, but just right.
