What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many years. In "Old City Bar," the angel finds the daughter, standing alone outside a bar, and talks to the bartender who, out of a random act of kindness, takes all the cash from his register drawer and gives it to the girl so she can go home. The third song, "This Christmas Day," has the father praising God, thanking him for bringing his daughter back to him on this night of all nights. The two stellar reissues of collected Dockstader material on the Starkland label can be separated by their connections to light and darker material. As could be expected, Apocalypse concerns the darker edge. Both the 20-minute title track and the included 10-minute "Traveling Music" cultivate a series of chilling atmospheres with few precedents in the academic electronic community. "Traveling Music" does so with a series of clicks and chirps that gradually morph themselves into an undeniable air of menace while "Apocalypse" accomplishes the same with Forbidden Planet effects reminiscent of flying saucers and interstellar explosions plus a series of voice treatments that truly do sound as though they're of an alien nature. Also included on the same disc, "Luna Park" turns the laughter of vacationers into chipmunk-frequency effects processed with tremendous amounts of reverb and echo. ~ John Bush
Starkland's two Tod Dockstader CDs have led to the recognition of this pioneering genius as one of the finest electronic music composers yet to appear. The Washington Post calls Dockstader "one of the giants in the field," while Stereophile places his output "on a par with the best." These two CDs have been extensively praised. For example, The Wire wrote that "The obsessive care with which Starkland have compiled these extraordinary recordings should ensure that Dockstader will be remembered as the innovative, visionary figure he undoubtedly was."Dockstader's second Starkland CD begins with the composer's pulsing, spatially-shifting Traveling Music. He explains that "Traveling Music was originally composed as a monaural piece... When I got the use of a two-track recorder, I used this piece, instead of doing a new work, so I could concentrate on teaching myself the techniques of placing sound in space (between speakers) and moving it through space - hence the title."The eerie, otherworldly Luna Park has been described by one critic as "one of the finest works of electronic music I've ever heard" (Fanfare). Dockstader writes that "Luna is a very simple piece: three movements - fast/slow/fast - using few sound-materials. (People remember the laughter; one station broadcast it as 'Dockstader's Laughing Music' - but there actually isn't that much laughter in it.) I wanted it to be silly and sad and simple. The title comes from the old Luna Park at Coney Island... by the time I saw it, all that remained was a vast, rutted parking lot."The CD's major work is the brooding, ominous Apocalypse. The composer details the disparate elements of this four-part masterpiece: "I wanted to do something heavier, thicker in texture, more unruly and alarming - a concrete Dies Irae. The slowed (creaking) doors and the cat-cry toy are central to it: they provided the threat and despair I wanted! The passage of Gregorian chant, in Part Two, was used as a vocalization of the door sounds - I'm always looking for sounds of different timbres that express the same emotion. The title is surprisingly accurate. The Turks, a smooth vocal quartet little remembered outside of hardcore doo wop collectors' circles but much beloved by those in the know, recorded only four sides for Bob Keene's Keen Records label, and those were from 1958, long after the group's initial splash in the Los Angeles vocal scene alongside the Platters, the Penguins and the Flamingos. However, this reconstituted lineup of the Turks included the legendary Jesse Belvin, one of L.A. doo wop's most legendary figures, and the four songs -- "Okay," "It's You," "Father Time" and "My Baby" (this last one was never completed) -- are all hugely enjoyable examples of the form featuring Belvin's interplay with the Turks' lead singer Gaynel Hodge. The rest of this 49-minute disc, however, is filled out with rehearsal takes and studio chatter that's of interest only to die-hard fans. ~ Stewart Mason
