The punishment befits the crime, and a quarter of a century later, Supertramp have been forgiven by critics. Quite why they induced such negative press seems unjustified, as 'Bloody Well Right' and 'Dreamer' sound as fresh as ever. The electric piano cuts through the speakers like a knife through butter, the treble at times hurting the ear like a heavy rock guitar solo. Both Hodgson's and Davies' voices sound rich and confident, although both are quite different. Maybe the pace slackens with the slightly indulgent 'If Everyone Was Listening' and the title track, but there are enough musical highlights to recommend this for any would-be '90s progster's wants list.

Nestled between the accomplished Crime of the Century album and 1977's Even in the Quietest Moments, Crisis? What Crisis? may not have given the band any chart success, but it did help them capture a fan base that had no concern for Supertramp's commercial sound. With Rick ...

Crime Of The Century music CDs
$14.75 Hailing from Canada, 54-40 are a long-standing staple of the alternative rock scene, and this 11th album from the band contains 11 tracks of their carefully constructed melodic rock.
The first album with former Matthew Good Band guitarist Dave Genn has Canadian rock icons 54-40 invigorated with new blood. And Yes to Everything shows the band very comfortable in delivering well-crafted rock that also happens to be radio-friendly at the same time. This is very evident judging by the midtempo pop/rock of "Easy to Love" that has a certain swagger to it. Meanwhile, the straightforward punch of "Can't Get Enough" also seems to work with Genn and singer Neil Osborne working as tightly as the tandem of drummer Matt Johnson and bassist Brad Merritt. The quartet also manages to change things up with the bouncy and almost ska-tinged "Golden Sun," that could be covered at some point by No Doubt. The first mediocre effort comes during the winding and somewhat meandering "Stopline" that relies on Merritt's bassline once too often. It's a cheerful effort but one that really doesn't go anywhere. The obvious highlight comes on the midtempo, roots-y "This Is ...

Crime Of The Century album
$12.39 Some albums take a while to find their tone, but Sneaky Thieves have captured their desired atmosphere with the leadoff number "Elegy," a pretty, poignant and pleasing instrumental that conjures up images of Godspeed You Black Emperor! or Sigur Rós without the ethereal vocals. This leads somewhat awkwardly into a lighter, thoughtful and focused pop number "With a Smile in a Suit" which is driven by "Freddy Bale" and his earnest warble. The atmosphere is quite important to the songs, whether it is during the close, hushed tone taken during the aptly titled "Quiet" or the rather mundane jazz-tinted "Nothing, Nothing" which is basically nothing to turn one's head. Fortunately, that's often the exception as Sneaky Thieves deliver "Old Tired Joke" with an almost Radiohead-like precision for very strong results. Just as fulfilling despite being half the length is the melancholic "Across the Field," which seems perfect for rainy Sunday fall evenings. Some efforts in the middle sag, including an interlude that is horrid filler, or padding at best. Yet the group wins the listener over again with sparse, inviting jewels such as "The Din" and possibly the lone uplifting or up-tempo number "The Point Is This..." with its winding, heady bridge portion. Only during "Forgotten" does the band seem to fall into the eerie or slow-building tension category with its growing use of ...

| | David Kolker Letting Go CD (2002)
Crime Of The Century music CDs
$10.65 David Kolker is an energetic, yet nuanced player who can reel off mind-blowing solos and deliver gutsy heart-felt vocals. He trades soul-bending licks with whirl-wind alto saxophonist Isamo Sato while Paul LeFebvre interlaces wiry melodic counterpoints with his Stratocaster or lays down thick rich chromatic carpets of chords with his leslie-drenched guitar and pedal steel. Driving it al is the inspired bass playing of Time Luntzell and the slippery/pliant/subtle/urbane drumming/drum stylings of Tony Mason.Kolker has been playing to a full house of in-the-know musicians and music-lovers every Tuesday night from 10 to 2 at the Baggott Inn on East Third Street for the past two years. Like veteran drummer Bernard ¡°Pretty¡± Purdie who said ¡°Man, I an hooked on what is going on here and I¡¯m coming back for more,¡± after seeing Kolker¡¯s dynamic live performance for the first time, may of the people who hear them once come back week after week/ make Tuesday night 10 to 2 the centerpiece of their music-listening schedules.DAVID KOLKER PRESSTHE NEW YORK TIMES, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2001David Kolker, Melvin Spark, Mike Errico,Mercury Lounge, 217 Houston Street, at Ludlow Street, lower east side, (212) 260-4700.
