Supertramp: Roger Hodgson (vocals, guitar, piano); John Anthony Helliwell (vocals, saxophone, clarinet); Richard Davies (vocals, harmonica, keyboards); Dougie Thomson (bass); Bob C. Benberg (drums, percussion). Producers: Ken Scott, Supertramp. Reissue producer: Beth Stempel. Recorded at Trident, Ramport Studios and Scorpion Sound, London, England between February & June 1974. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Supertramp came into their own on their third album, 1974's Crime of the Century, as their lineup gelled but, more importantly, so did their sound. The group still betrayed a heavy Pink Floyd influence, particularly in its expansive art rock arrangements graced by saxophones, but Supertramp isn't nearly as spooky as Floyd -- they're snarky collegiate elitists, an art rock variation on Steely Dan or perhaps a less difficult 10cc, filled with cutting jokes and allusions, best heard on "Bloody Well Right." This streak would later flourish on Breakfast in America, but it's present enough to give them their own character. Also present is a slight sentimental streak and a heavy fondness for pop, heard on "Dreamer," a soaring piece of art pop that became their first big hit. That and "Bloody Well Right" are the concise pop moments on the record; the rest of Crime of the Century is atmospheric like Dark Side of the Moon, but with a lighter feel and a Beatles bent. At times the album floats off into its own world, with an effect more tedious than hypnotic, but it's still a huge leap forward for the group and their most consistent album outside of that 1979 masterwork, Breakfast in America. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The punishment befits the crime, and a quarter of a century later, Supertramp have been forgiven by critics. Quite why they induced such negative press seems unjustified, as 'Bloody Well Right' and 'Dreamer' sound as fresh as ever. The electric piano cuts through the speakers like a knife through butter, the treble at times hurting the ear like a heavy rock guitar solo. Both Hodgson's and Davies' voices sound rich and confident, although both are quite different. Maybe the pace slackens with the slightly indulgent 'If Everyone Was Listening' and the title track, but there are enough musical highlights to recommend this for any would-be '90s progster's wants list.

Crime Of The Century
$12.39 Some albums take a while to find their tone, but Sneaky Thieves have captured their desired atmosphere with the leadoff number "Elegy," a pretty, poignant and pleasing instrumental that conjures up images of Godspeed You Black Emperor! or Sigur Rós without the ethereal vocals. This leads somewhat awkwardly into a lighter, thoughtful and focused pop number "With a Smile in a Suit" which is driven by "Freddy Bale" and his earnest warble. The atmosphere is quite important to the songs, whether it is during the close, hushed tone taken during the aptly titled "Quiet" or the rather mundane jazz-tinted "Nothing, Nothing" which is basically nothing to turn one's head. Fortunately, that's often the exception as Sneaky Thieves deliver "Old Tired Joke" with an almost Radiohead-like precision for very strong results. Just as fulfilling despite being half the length is the melancholic "Across the Field," which seems perfect for rainy Sunday fall evenings. Some efforts in the middle sag, including an interlude that is horrid filler, or padding at best. Yet the group wins the listener over again with sparse, inviting jewels such as "The Din" and possibly the lone uplifting or up-tempo number "The Point Is This..." with its winding, ...
| | Patrick Wolf Magic Position CD (2007)
Crime Of The Century
$9.89 Personnel: Patrick Wolf (autoharp); Marianne Faithfull (vocals); Victoria Sutherland (violin); Katy Wright (cello); Derek Apps (alto clarinet); Mark Rudland (trombone); Flip Philipp (glockenspiel); Werner Dafeldecker (double bass); Richard Eigner (drums); Anna At Eastcate, Jeremy Shaw, Patrick Pulsinger (hand claps); Jo Apps (background vocals); Austrian String Quartet. Additional personnel: Edward Larrikin (vocals). On his 2007 major-label debut, THE MAGIC POSITION, Irish singer-songwriter Patrick Wolf largely abandons his brooding Nick Cave-like demeanor (expertly displayed on '05's acclaimed WIND IN THE WIRES), opting instead to embrace the aesthetic of a brightly bedecked, life-loving dandy. What hasn't changed in this POSITION is Wolf's wildly inventive approach, which fully showcases the young performer's expressive croon and multi-instrumental skills on tracks ranging from the swooning, New Romantic-influenced "Bluebells" to the pulsing, beat-driven "Accident and Emergency" to the delicate, jazzy "Enchanted." As unpredictable and fascinating as Wolf himself, ...
| | David Kolker Letting Go CD (2002)
Crime Of The Century
$10.65 David Kolker is an energetic, yet nuanced player who can reel off mind-blowing solos and deliver gutsy heart-felt vocals. He trades soul-bending licks with whirl-wind alto saxophonist Isamo Sato while Paul LeFebvre interlaces wiry melodic counterpoints with his Stratocaster or lays down thick rich chromatic carpets of chords with his leslie-drenched guitar and pedal steel. Driving it al is the inspired bass playing of Time Luntzell and the slippery/pliant/subtle/urbane drumming/drum stylings of Tony Mason.Kolker has ...
