There's little doubt that the Tragically Hip are sick of being called "the Canadain R.E.M.," but it's just so much fun to say. Besides which, there's a grain of truth to the appelation. The band's ringing guitars, intelligent lyrics, and rich, driving sound would garner them a welcome among fans of Stipe and company, but the Hip do have gheir own identity. That identity has made them a big deal in their homeland for years (their first album was released in 1987). Their smaller but still fervent stateside following turned out in droves to pick up IN VIOLET LIGHT which offers everything from the hard-rocking, Stones/Replacements-like bravado of "Use it Up" to the quirky, evocative "It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken."

In Violet Light album
$14.29 JERUSALEM was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
For a singer-songwriter who proclaims himself "somewhat to the left of Mao" it's no surprise that Steve Earle has drawn the ire of the right for challenging the status quo, particularly around the one-year anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks. ...

| | John Hiatt Beneath This Gruff Exterior CD (2003)
In Violet Light music CDs
$14.45 "Some people call it depression and I call it a song." That simple observation from "Uncommon Connection," the rollickingly catchy opening track of songwriter/singer John Hiatt's 2003 release BENEATH THIS GRUFF EXTERIOR, sums it up quite sweetly. Hiatt's been channeling glorious depression through the muse since the early ...

In Violet Light songs
$15.09 THE WIND won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Keep Me in Your Heart" was nominated for Song Of The Year and for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Disorder in the House" won for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and was also nominated for Best Rock Song.
With the specter of a terminal lung cancer diagnosis hanging over his head, Warren Zevon responded by rallying to make THE WIND, an album that found him working with longtime collaborator and friend ...
| | Tragically Hip In Between Evolution CD (2004)
In Violet Light album
$14.55 The first few seconds of In Between Evolution offer a summation in miniature of both why the Tragically Hip are so great and why mainstream success has eluded them, at least in the United States. A distorted guitar chimes out a road-ready riff, soon joined by a taut rhythm section. Then lead singer Gordon Downie shouts out "Here's a glue guy, a performance God," in a pinched howl that sounds like it's ready to veer off-key at any second. That combination of arena rock and indie sensibility is exactly what fans have come to expect from the band; the approach isn't all that different ...

| | Throw Rag Desert Shores CD (2003)
In Violet Light music CDs
$11.79 Throw Rag's approach to punk rock is refreshing and yet still time-honored. "Space Hump Me" has a lot of early-'70s punk in it, particularly with the sneering vocals and simple arrangement such as the Damned. Lead singer Captain Sean-Doe never lets loose as the song is wild but still quite tight, much like "Hollywood," which appears later. "Hang Up" continues the party rock atmosphere as more guitars are brought ...
| | Stiff Little Fingers Now Then CD (1982)
In Violet Light songs
$12.95 After the unabashed brilliance of Go for It, Stiff Little Fingers' fourth album, September 1982's Now Then came as something of a disappointment, a bedraggled mish-mash that illustrated (though nobody knew it at the time) the internal dissent that was already pulling the group apart. Within weeks of Now Then's release, Stiff Little Fingers would have disbanded, to lie fallow for much of the next five years, and it was only with the release, in 1983, of the All the Best compilation that the true brilliance of the best of this album was revealed. Divorced from the often workaday filler that punctuated the album, the U.K. hit single "Bits of Kids," the snappy "Touch And Go" and "Talkback," and a genuinely moving version of Nicky Thomas' reggae smash "Love of the Common People" are as good as any earlier Fingers masterpiece, while the bonus tracks appended to the Captain Oi! reissue round up the solidly excellent 1.10 or Less EP, plus the bitter B-side "Good for Nothing." ~ Dave Thompson

$6.69 Joey Pearson is a phenomenon! The instant you hear him, you know he was born to sing. The key to Joey's electrifying presence is that his performances feel so right, so effortless: no feigned emotion, no artificial ingredients. His ability to connect with an audience is second to none. While Joey grew up in the Nineties, his shows sizzle with intensity that evokes ...
