A range of emotions played out via a range of rock-&-roll styles, TIME BOMB HIGH SCHOOL is a high-water mark in the lengthy career of garage-rock mover and shaker Greg Cartwright. Kicking off with a raucous cover of the standard "Stormy Weather," the album touches on everything from power pop and singer-songwriter country to classic R&B and soul without compromising its basic guitar-driven punk energy.
While garage rock often prioritizes sloppy energy over skill and traditional musicianship, on TIME BOMB HIGH SCHOOL, Cartwright's considerable abilities as a songwriter, his clear love of pop music's rich past (in addition to "Stormy Weather," the album contains several other choice covers), and his obvious desire to communicate genuinely with his audience are placed at the fore. Cartwright has taken garage rock out of the dingy clubhouse from which it got its name and made an underground classic.

| Time Bomb High School Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Great follow-up by the Reigning Sound. Reigning Sound
Time Bomb High School, CD (In The Red records)
Okay, new album by Reigning Sound, this time released (in 2002) on In The Red records. Same line-up as on last record, guess they´re friends then, no wonder since they seem like nice folks.
The old classic, "Stormy weather"(written by Arlen/Koehler, but don´t know the band) starts the ball, and they´ve put more energy in it, than the whole "Break up..." record. Great back-up vocals by the boys, and Greg roberson is quite a steady drummer. I was a bit surprised, in a positive way, since the last record was so calm and easy 60´s rock. They really wanna rock´n roll this time, and it sounds like they´ve had more fun in the studio. Maybe not so heartbroken, but still gotta sing about longing and hurtin´. That´s the way of rock´n roll, it´s always about the competition between men and women. And few are better writing about it than Greg Cartwright. Though they´ve included some cover-songs, they got a pretty big vault of wonderful music down there in Memphis, TN. And only the best ones are chosen.
The punk-rock feeling of the smash-hit (should be anyway) title-track, and "She´s bored with you", really makes the crowd dance. Impossible to sit still, and great sing-a-longs (right guys?!).
Mostly, "Time bomb high school" reminds me of Hermans Hermits, with much more guitar. A nice way to sum it up, and look forward to the next Reigning Sound release.

Time Bomb High School songs
$11.59 Greg Cartwright sums up his approach on the third album from the Reigning Sound with the title, Too Much Guitar -- here, Cartwright moves the old-school soul influences that were in the forefront on Break Up Break Down and Time Bomb High School to the back burner in favor of a hip-shakin' set of loud and primal guitar-based rock & roll. While Cartwright's passion for R&B is still prominent in these songs (and their performances), here it manifests itself in a set of tunes that take Stones/Pretties-style raunch and filters it through '60s garage rock bashing in the manner of the Sonics or the Misunderstood. In short, this thing goes bash, pound, bash through ...
| | Reigning Sound Home For Orphans CD (2005)
Time Bomb High School album
$9.95 This short (28 minutes) album is primarily made up of outtakes from the sessions for Reigning Sound's 2004 scorcher Too Much Guitar, but if that disc was too much rock and not enough soul for you, then you're in luck. Home for Orphans is dominated by the sort of moody, low-key laments that are Greg Cartwright's real secret weapon when he isn't cranking his amp up to ten, along with a superb cover of Gene Clark's "Here Without You" that fits this set like a glove. While "If You Can't Give Me Everything," "Funny Thing," and "Medication" all appeared on Too Much Guitar, these versions turn down the volume and dig into the lonely heart and soul of these songs, and prove that there are few people who can write and sing modern-day soul with the same passion and skill as Cartwright. His band offers understated but solid support (especially Alex Greene on organ), and it's hard to imagine why songs as good as "Find Me Now" and "What Could I Do" didn't ...

| | Matthew Von Doran In This Present Moment CD (2004)
Time Bomb High School CD music
$11.09 Matthew Von Doran has an easy listening tone on the guitar. However, his lazy sound should not lure listeners into thinking this is a sleepy date, for the music grooves in its own way, ranging from light fusion and post-bop to some swinging sections. A great deal of inner fire is expressed along the way. There are spots for the tenors of Bob Mintzer and Bob Sheppard and some for the other sidemen, but guitarist Von Doran is the star throughout and he rises to the occasion. Of course, it is not surprising that he knows the material well, for he composed all ten songs. While none of the tunes are probably destined to become standards, they work well on this set, as does the constant changing of personnel and instrumentation. Matthew Von Doran, who is versatile and subtle, deserves to be much better known. ~ Scott Yanow
