(4 Customer Reviews)
A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety will appreciate the fact that this is an unapologetic, non-ironic valentine to the sound of not only Skynyrd, but the Allman Brothers, the Marshall Tucker Band, and the modern-day jam bands that are their musical descendents. Funny and surprisingly sad, passionate but with obvious good humor, SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA must be experienced to be understood.

Rolling Stone (1/31/02, p.54) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Explodes the yahoo baggage of 1970s Southern rock in a roaring memoir of gorwing up white, loud and desperate in the former Confederacy..." Spin (1/03, p.72) - Ranked #23 on Spin's list of 2002's "Albums of the Year" - "...Fictionalizing the bourbon-soaked saga of Lynyrd Skynyrd, SOUTHERN ROCK is a hard-rock history lesson for anyone who's ever yelled out for 'Freebird' and meant it." Q (9/02, p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...This is indeed a rock opera...and they are unafraid to rock. Bonkers of course, but it's also a treat." Southern Rock Opera Music Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera Songs Southern Rock Opera Music Southern Rock Opera Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) Lynyrd Remembered The "...Truckers" remember and pay tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd in this Southern rock opus. Some of the better tracks include "Guitar Man Upstairs" thru the eyes of an old man and "Shut Up and Get on the Plane" and "Greenville to Baton Rouge" and the down tempo "Woman without Whiskey". All in all, a good album and a good buy. The "...Truckers" are in the same category as the Outlaws, Georgia Sattelites and .38 Special. Good ol' Sothern white boy rock 'n' Roll - 3 chords and a cloud of dust. Submitted by dfwthebold (Waterloo, IA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 3 found this helpful.
Death on the Highway Patterson Hood and DBT tell the story of the in and outs of growing up in the South. Fast Cars, Booze, Drugs, and Death on the Highway. Rednecks pay the ultimate price getting thier kicks after too many brews or bowls on some twisting dark highway with Skynard cranking in the radio, leaving only some bizzare shrine to remind us of the dangers of our youthful past Submitted by shaun_dubois (Parts Unknown Arkansas) Was This Review Helpful? Check this out!! Intrigued by the title and a reference in one song to Blue Oyster Cult, I bought this. I like it better with each listen. It's Southern rock as you've probably never heard, a story about growing up in the south and the musical and political influences. Very interesting, great lyrics and music "throw another log on the fire, George Wallace is comin' to Hell". Ya gotta love it! Expect big things from these guys! Southern Rock Opera album
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Decoration Day CD (2003)
Southern Rock Opera CD music
$14.19 Though SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is probably the Drive-By Truckers' most ambitious album, its follow-up, DECORATION DAY, is where the band really came into its own. The template they established on their first three albums--bluesy Southern rock with a raw punk edge and a contemporary alt-country tinge--is at it's most concise ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Dirty South CD (2004) Digipak
Southern Rock Opera music CDs
$11.79 After recording SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA--a two-act, two-disc epic about growing up in the American South--and then following it up with 2003's equally lauded DECORATION DAY, one might think Drive-By Truckers would be out of energy. But nothing seems tired about 2004's THE DIRTY SOUTH. In an age when some artists are building a glamorous "redneck" image, Drive-By Truckers convey realistic, hard-hitting truths about life in the margins of the South.
Here the Truckers unveil a dark, lean roots-rock set redolent of whiskey, low-income housing, and kudzu vines, as they spin narratives about war veterans ("The Sands of Iwo Jima"), steel workers ("The Day John Henry Died"), and convicts ("The Boys from Alabama"). With the exception of a couple of hook-filled, sing-along rockers, the band favors portraits of struggle. "Puttin' People on the Moon" depicts a character working at department store and selling drugs to support his family, while "Cottonseed" is a confession from a murderous outlaw. There ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Pizza Deliverance CD (1999) Remastered; Digipak
Southern Rock Opera songs
$12.79 An Alabama alt-country band puts out an album named Pizza Deliverance -- sounds like a gimmick, right? Another band taking potshots at double-wides, velvet Elvises, and appearances on Cops, riding the ironic white-trash train. Make no mistake, the Drive-By Truckers are white trash by trade. But they're trash with heart, attentive to the South's smaller details without being condescending, sensitive without being sentimental. Behind the greasy, sand-twang vocals, frontman Patterson Hood is a barroom storyteller through and through. And like their debut, Gangstabilly, the Truckers' sophomore Pizza Deliverance extends Hood's sensibilities beyond Southern-fried ...

| | New Mixes, Vol. 1: Quincy Jones And Bill Cosby CD (2004)
Southern Rock Opera songs
$9.65 The remix collection that complements Original Jam Sessions 1969 has a handful of stunners, with the rest of the tracks being groovy enough, if only because of Bill Cosby and Quincy Jones' original recordings. Herbert mucks everything up on his track, making Quincy's band sound both death metal and amusement-park carousel. Cornershop relate ...
| | Tracks Of Tyler Hilton CD (2004) Enhanced CD
Southern Rock Opera album
$8.39 The Tracks of Tyler Hilton is the kind of major-label pop debut that's not heard much in 2004 -- an album that has its eye on middle-American middle of the road, appealing equally to pre-teens and housewives without condescending to either. Hilton isn't a teen-pop idol, nor is he a crooner. He's an unabashed mainstream pop singer/songwriter, blessed with good looks, a lightly husky and appealing voice, a good ear and a knack for pleasing MOR mature pop. It's a sound that would have had found a greater audience in the first Bush administration rather than the second, but that doesn't mean that it sounds dated -- it just means that there are few venues ...
