Purchase Con Mariachi CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Disney Mania Vol. 1: Pop CD (2002)
Con Mariachi album
$10.19 Taking a page from the Hal Willner-produced 1988 collection STAY AWAKE, the folks at the House Of Mouse enlisted 2002's bubble-gum brigade to achieve the same goals with DISNEYMANIA. Some of pop's biggest names have been handed over music from numerous Disney flicks (with most of the emphasis being on '80s and '90s fare), and then asked to give them totally new makeovers. Thus you have Smashmouth infusing a light trip-hop beat, turntable scratches, and surf guitar into "I Wanna Be Like You," Baha Men laying on a dash of steel drums to a bouncy "Hakuna Matata," and No Secrets frolicking amidst the beeping electronics of "Kiss The Girl."
Other highlights include Anastacia making over the normally saccharine "Some Day My Prince Will Come" with keyboard washes and a soulful delivery, A*Teens pumping in beats and toasting into "Under The Sea," and *Nsync putting an a cappella stamp onto "When You Wish Upon A Star." Not surprisingly, The Lion King soundtrack gets plundered the most as Aaron Carter puts a "Footloose"-like spin on "I Just Can't Wait To Be King," S Club delivers an understated "Can You Feel The Love Tonight," and Ronan Keating ...
| | Los Campesinos De Michoacan CD (2003)
Con Mariachi CD music
$9.59 Los Campesinos de Michoacan is split roughly half-and-half between a session the group did in November 1985 and one they did in February 1987. The personnel altered between sessions, although group leader Salvador Baldovinos (who sings and plays harp) and his singer wife, Elisa Baldovinos, participated in both. Though there are differences between numerous areas of Mexico in the traditional music produced by the regions, to most listeners not deeply schooled in the sounds, this will for the most part sound like average Mexican traditional fare. It's heavy on the violins, vocal duets, and merry rancheras, though Salvador Baldovinos' harp adds a more specifically Michoacan element. At times another relatively unusual factor comes into play when a rhythm is beat out on the box of the harp itself. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Jenni Rivera Homenaje A Las Grandes CD (2003)
Con Mariachi music CDs
$11.19 In Spanish, the word "homenaje" means "homage" or "tribute." When salsa/Latin jazz giant Tito Puente recorded an album titled Homenaje a Beny Moré in 1978, he was paying homage to one of the top Afro-Cuban bandleaders of the '40s and '50s -- he was saluting Beny Moré's accomplishments. Similarly, Mexican-American banda/corrido vocalist Jenni Rivera pays homage to some of the major Mexican singers -- specifically, female singers -- on Homenaje a las Grandes. The title Homenaje a las Grandes means "homage to the great ones," and Rivera salutes a variety of singers who have had a major impact on Mexican music -- including Mercedes Castro on "Ahora Vengo a Verte," Lucha Villa and Rocio Dúrcal on "Juro Que Nunca Volvere," and the late Lola Beltrán on a medley of "Por un Amor" and "Cucurrucucu Paloma." And Rivera, much to her credit, is smart enough to salute these "estrellas mexicanas" (Mexican female stars) on her own terms; she makes certain that her own vibrant personality shines through instead of actually emulating any of them. Rivera also salutes someone who most definitely isn't Mexican -- Diana Ross -- on an unlikely remake of the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go," which is the CD's only English-language track and lends itself surprisingly well to a banda/corrido makeover. You wouldn't expect to find a Ross/Supremes classic on what is primarily a tribute to Mexican singers, but then, classic soul has been tremendously popular among Mexican-Americans ...
