Following its release, the New York Times devoted a Sunday edition article to the group, which went on to win the 1995 Kerrville New Music Award because of this debut effort. The album showcased the eerie vocals of Kelly Flint and the songwriting of Dave Cantor, the man who gave the group its name. Together, they create relaxed lounge music with both jazz and pop overtones, though more the former than the latter. In particular, "Crazy Eyes" stands out because of its appearance in the film Kissing Jessica Stein. Originally self-released, this eponymous debut remained long out of print until 2002, when Flint and Cantor remastered and re-released it with four bonus tracks, one of them being a remix of "Crazy Eyes." [In addition, the 2002 re-release featured a slightly altered cover design.] ~ Jason Birchmeier The eponymous debut album by Dave's True Story won substantial acclaim upon its initial release in 1994. Cantor, who writes the material, has a very wry macabre sense of humor. Its not that these are funny songs but some are so dark you can't help but laugh. The arrangements, which owe a debt to classic Blue Note Jazz, are beautifully recorded. Cantor plays guitar and Kelly Flint sings with a breezy Julie London/June Christy sort of sound. Flint's flat delivery of the gender bending "Nadine" is very classy. All her vocals are understated and clearly communicate the smartness of the lyrics. Other key tracks are "My Last Go Round" about impending reincarnation and a pick-up bar, and "Flexible Man," which is an upscale generous song about bondage. ~ Richard Meyer The eponymous debut album by Dave's True Story won substantial acclaim upon its initial release in 1994. Dave's True Story
$9.45 With only seven Bob Dylan covers (three are reprised as "radio edits," another is repeated as an "alternative mix"), and a closing original tune, this is more an EP than a full-length album. Regardless, Dave's True Story does right by Dylan, covering songs from the early part of his career, with two coming from Blood on the Tracks and two from Blonde on Blonde. Reinterpreting them in the DTS' lounge-core, tropicalia fashion ...

Dave's True Story
$10.49 By Peggy OliverWhy I Sing by Kirk Franklin and The Family drew immense inspiration from God to move in a certain songwriter/producer's life. That was the first choir directing experience for James Fortune. From the age of five when he played drums at his father's church to leading choirs, he senses praise is unique for everyone, especially the youth. You Survived, the debut for Fortune and FIYA (Free In Yahwah's Abundance) exemplifies the only way to peace of mind is turning to the Creator. FIYA, formerly known as Young For Christ, administers the Good News throughout the greater Houston, Texas area. They were also nominated several times over as Texas Gospel Youth and Young Choir, plus opened for Mary Mary, Donald Lawrence and The Tri-City Mass Choir, and Ricky Smiley. Fortune also serves as Youth and Young Adult Minister of Music for Southwest Community Church "The Bridge" of Houston. No matter whom Fortune is involved with musically, his main concern lies in communicating God's sustaining love through storms of life and the joy of knowing Who is waiting on the other side. The festivities start with an appropriate greeting, We Welcome. Surrounded by barely an instrumental whisper, a calming presence enters: "We welcome in Your power...Your might, For when I could not take the pain, You came and wiped my tears away." Cheryl Fortune's (James' wife) tender voice and FIYA rolls out the welcome mat fit for the ultimate King. Two left feet-two right feet; there's no limit in dancing when praise follows suit. The party on My Praise is loud and clear, including aggressive raps by EB and nods to Beyonce's recent jam Crazy In Love sans original lyrics with James sneaking in the last laugh. I'm Still Here reminds us never dwell on the bills and the like, focusing more on eternal goodness: "Troubles come but I'm glad they won't last always, Clouds go away, the sun brings a new day." A dramatic vignette to God Can centers on a young woman stressed out in finding financial security for her child after the lights are shut down in her home. This is one of many tests in the game of life, but as guest vocalist Micah Stampley testifies, ...

Dave's True Story
$13.49 The French singer-songwriter, Gil Rose made his musical début with the punk-rock'n'roll groups The Paralytics and The Bohemians. Rose had been originally attracted to, and influenced by, the Anglo-Saxon tradition as played by the likes of Alex Chilton, Suicide, The Kinks, T-Rex and The Velvet Underground. Eager for a different experience, he struck out on his own, giving his first solo concert in 1996. This was followed by a series of gigs in such diverse venues as the bars and squats of his new-found stamping-ground of Geneva. Then Rose began to look elsewhere for inspiration and found it in such french musicians as Nino Ferrer, Dutronc, and Ronnie Bird. Up to this point, Rose had been concentrating on writing his lyrics in English which certainly was a good exercise in rhythm but his new musical influences gave him a desire to try writing, in what he likes to call, The Original Version, thus helping him find a more personal tone. This passage led to a new period of prolific writing accumulating in a sizable repertoire of songs. To record these works it was quite natural for Rose to turn to the accomplices of his early days for support. We find jack O. Leroy, guitarist and vocalist, whose talents had previously been noted in albums by Drive Blind and Kevin K. There is Mat Mysterious, bassist, the Pop Sir of the band, who has also recorded with Drive Blind and another band, Via Romance. And last, but not least, Doc Poison, the man with the harmonica from Rose’s Paralytic days, who had performed with The Sonic Reducers and Mystery Girls as well.In 2005, the band released their first album, Le Roi de Rien, (The ...
