Mahler: Symphony No 9 / Claudio Abbado, Berlin Po
$8.29 The CD reissue of the two volumes titled The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson straighten out his three Blue Note sessions of 1953-55 and add alternate takes. This particular CD concentrates exclusively on the trombonist's 1953 sextet date with the great trumpeter Clifford Brown, Jimmy Heath (who doubles on tenor and baritone), pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Kenny Clarke. The six titles (plus three alternates) are highlighted by "It Could Happen to You," "Turnpike" and a classic rendition of "Get Happy." Although Johnson has a couple of features, Clifford Brown largely steals the show. This CD is well worth getting by listeners who do not have the music on Brownie's own Complete Blue Note set. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at WOR Studio, New York, New York on June 22, 1953.
Personnel: J.J. Johnson (trombone); Jimmy Heath (tenor & baritone saxophones); Clifford Brown (trumpet); John Lewis (piano); Percy Heath (bass); Kenny Clarke (drums).

Mahler: Symphony No 9 / Claudio Abbado, Berlin Po
$13.55 The last Stones studio album of the '60s finds the band, for perhaps the first time, accurately reflecting the spirit of its age. The erstwhile bad boy outsiders of rock now found themselves firmly in the center of the social and political post-'68 whirlwind, and faced up to the challenge magnificently. The band's confident climb to its artistic peak was begun by BEGGAR'S BANQUET, but LET IT BLEED is a quantum leap even from that musical milestone.
The album's opener, "Gimme Shelter," with its insinuating guitar introduction, leads us decisively out of Flower Power and into a world where rape and murder are "just a shot away," and the Devil of BANQUET is very much alive and taking names. There's a nod to seminal influence Robert Johnson, whose "Love in Vain" is a mandolin-accompanied highlight. The climax arrives in the form of "You Can't Always Get What You Want," bearing references to the fallout of the Swinging London era. LET IT BLEED finds the Stones brimming with musical confidence and artistic inspiration.

Mahler: Symphony No 9 / Claudio Abbado, Berlin Po
$21.15 EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas.
The thing that separates the men from the boys in the world of jazz improvisation is listening--when the performers are paying close attention to one another, the creative horizons are all but limitless. It would be a slight to say this quintet is all on the same page, better to imagine they all bring their knowledge of great art and fine cuisine to bear each time they play together--it's a multi-faceted, heady brew. Holland's compositions are angular but never dissonant, polished but also earthy. The illusion is that these tunes flow effortlessly from this smart ensemble. The truth is that this is one of the best groups in early 21st-century jazz, based on a refined collective sensibility that is savvy and rare.
Dave Holland Quintet: Dave Holland (double-bass); Chris Potter (soprano, alto & tenor saxophone); Robin Eubanks (trombone, cowbell); Steve Nelson (vibraphone, marimba); Billy Kilson (drums).
