John McLaughlin is regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in the history of music. Making albums from the 60's through the present, his intense guitar work with The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Miles Davis gave birth to jazz/fusion. In 1984 he formed a reincarnation of sorts of The Mahavishnu Orchestra. John McLaughlin resurrected the esteemed old Mahavishnu Orchestra for his mid-'80s quintet, even getting old mate Billy Cobham to fill the drum slot on the band's first album. But this is an entirely different conception than any of the '70s Mahavishnu outfits. The sound is cooler, less strident, more thoroughly dominated by advanced electronic textures -- including a sleekly elegant digital guitar played through a Synclavier. Instead of a violin, Bill Evans contributes some swirling and sometimes bop-flavored work on saxes, and McLaughlin gets mobile but not overly combustible support from keyboardist Mitch Forman and bassist Jonas Hellborg. The homages continue; the opening of "Nostalgia" is exactly that, a throwback to "In a Silent Way" as filtered through digital gear. While this is undeniably prog-minded, beautifully played electric music, it is not terribly absorbing; the quality of the material and the intensity level aren't too high. ~ Richard S. Ginell

The third (re)incarnation of the mahavishnu band leaves you as
dumb-founded as the first two. Just as much "fast stuff" as the first bands, but the new sounds, given the new technology, and the fact that "The Mahavishnu" is about 11 years older gives the record ( and the performance/Copenhagen 1984 ) a more mature, even mellow feeling.
Definately a must for true followers.
I had it on vinyl, and havn't heard it for about 16 years.
It was like meeting an old friend again.

 Don't expect "Birds of Fire" or "Inner Mounting Flame"
A decent enough "traditional" jazz disc - how could it be bad with John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham on it - but this is Mahavishnu Orchestra in name only.
The material included on this disc is nothing like the ground breaking "Inner Mounting Flame" or "Birds of Fire", or even like the later discs under the Mahavishnu moniker with Narada Michael Walden, such as "Visions of the Emerald Beyond."
Actually, I just purchased the Chick Corea title "Friends" for my wife (one of her faves) in the same order as this title, and enjoyed it far more.
Unless you're a completist, or like "lounge" and "trad" jazz, stay away. I give this three stars on the strength of the musicianship, but not the material.

Old fashioned jazz-rock (sorry, fusion)revival for a guitar hero who still seems to live in the seventies. What can we say else?
Than the technic of McLaughling still impress but thant it's just technic and not music with it full range of emotion, drama, and true sonic adventure? An empty celebration of revolute and forgetable past.

This is the album that made John McLaughlin a semi-household name, a furious, high-energy, yet rigorously conceived meeting of virtuosos that, for all intents and purposes, defined the fusion of jazz and rock a year after Miles Davis' Bitches Brew breakthrough. It also inadvertently led to the derogatory connotation of the word fusion, for it paved the way for an army of imitators, many of whose excesses and commercial panderings devalued the entire movement. Though much was made of the influence of jazz-influenced improvisation in the Mahavishnu band, it is the rock element that predominates, stemming directly from the electronic innovations of Jimi Hendrix. The improvisations, particularly McLaughlin's post-Hendrix machine-gun assaults on double-necked electric guitar and Jerry Goodman's flights on electric violin, owe more to the freakouts that had been circulating in progressive rock circles than to jazz, based as they often are on ostinatos on one chord. These still sound genuinely thrilling today on CD, as McLaughlin and Goodman battle Jan Hammer's keyboards, Rick Laird's bass, and especially Billy Cobham's hard-charging drums, whose jazz-trained technique pushed the envelope for all rock drummers. Anyone with even a passing interest in classic fusion and progressive jazz will want to own TRIO OF DOOM. Comprising three giants of the genre--guitarist John McLaughlin, drummer Tony Williams, and bassist Jaco Pastorius--Trio of Doom recorded both a studio session and a live set in 1979, and this 10-track disc contains selections from each, including Pastorius's "Continuum," McLaughlin's "Dark Prince," and Williams's "Drum Improvisation." Needless to say the playing is superb, and the energy--complex, knotted, and consistently pushing toward astral heights--is dazzling.
Certainly the potential of a recording by this trio featuring guitarist John McLaughlin and drummer Tony Williams (both members of Lifetime with organist Larry Young) along with bassist Jaco Pastorius -- aka the Trio of Doom -- is enormous. Although it was recorded in 1988, the photo of Leon Redbone on the cover of No Regrets harks back to an earlier time. In fact, he looks as though he's getting ready to sell some innocent soul property in the Florida swamp. But the listener need have no fear. Redbone's old-fashioned fashion sense only reflects his musical taste, firmly planted in pop, blues, and jazz from the '20s, '30s, and '40s. He's equally at home with Mooney and Seals' "Crazy Arms" as he is with Hank Williams' "Long Gone Lonesome Blues." The spare production performed by luminaries like banjoist Béla Fleck, violinist Mark O'Connor, and dobroist Jerry Douglas gives these songs a nice, simple underpinning. Redbone's husky vocals add the last ingredient needed for fine versions of "Lazy Bones" and "My Good Gal's Done Gone Blues." He seems to have a special penchant for old Ernest Tubb and Jimmie Rodgers' songs, but he's smart enough to pick lesser-known jewels like "You Nearly Lose Your Mind" and "Somewhere Down Below the Dixon Line." The only drawback to the whole affair is how straightforward it is. While the songs and vocals are technically solid, they lack the spark that made earlier Redbone albums something special. Still, No Regrets is an enjoyable album and fans will appreciate its 2004 reissue on CD. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel Anderson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Kengo Nakamura, and percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez. Special mention must be made of Robert Rucker for his highly energetic tambourine performance on the New Orleans "2nd Line" finale. New Orleans jazz aficionados may recognize this tune as "Joe Avery's Blues" and based on the cheering, clapping, and general rowdiness of the crowd, it probably found the band marching around the room. In fact, one of the great things about the album is that you can really hear the crowd. There are many moments of the band playing a particularly nice phrase or line and somebody grunting out a surprised and pleased "hmmm." Marsalis seems to really feed off this interplay and his playing, never less than technically superb, sounds inspired. To these ends, Marsalis takes swinging blues and angular post-bop harmonicism to ever-increasing absurdist heights on "Green Chimneys." While Four & More and My Funny Valentine -- both taken from the same 1964 New York Philharmonic Hall concert -- are most often cited as this lineup's essential live recording, Miles Davis in Europe is a no less exciting listen.
