2002 reissue of the 1963 jazz classic originally issued on Reprise. Collectables.
Personnel includes: Chico Hamilton (drums); Charles Lloyd (tenor saxophone, flute); Gabor Szabo (guitar). Personnel: Chico Hamilton (drums); Gabor Szabo (guitar); Charles Lloyd (flute, tenor saxophone); George Bohannon (trombone). Liner Note Author: Nat Hentoff. Recording information: 01/19/1963-01/31/1963. Drummer Chico Hamilton considered this quintet (which also included Charles Lloyd on tenor and flute, trombonist George Bohanon, guitarist Gabor Szabo and bassist Albert Stinson) to be his finest band. This superb LP of material not yet reissued on CD has several memorable melodies (including the closing "Island Blues"), lots of advanced yet logical improvising, and more than its share of variety. The group had its own sound and was quite underrated during its relatively short life. A gem. ~ Scott Yanow

Different Journey
$12.49 Live Recording
Personnel: Chico Hamilton (drums); Charles Lloyd (tenor saxophone, flute); George Bohanon (trombone); Gabor Szabo (guitar); Albert Stinson (bass). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded on September 18, 1962 and December 11, 1963. Digitally remastered by Paul Elmore (MCA Music Media Studios). Although it tended to get overlooked at the time, one of drummer Chico Hamilton's finest groups was his 1962-1963 quartet/quintet. With Charles Lloyd at his most fiery on tenor and flute, and the colorful solos of the up-and-coming Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo, this band placed a stronger emphasis on melody and softer sounds than the more avant-garde groups of the time but still pushed away at musical boundaries. Trombonist George Bohanon is also on the final four numbers of this CD reissue, ...

| | Gabor Szabo Spellbinder CD (1967) Remastered
Different Journey
$8.65 Personnel: Gabor Szabo (vocals, guitar); Ron Carter (double bass); Chico Hamilton (drums); Willie Bobo, Victor Pantoja (percussion). Liner Note Author: Nat Hentoff. Released just six months after Gypsy '66, Gabor Szabo's second album as a leader (after leaving a sublime Chico Hamilton band that also included Charles Lloyd) remains one of his finest moments in the studio. Szabo utilized the tales of bassist Ron Carter and his old boss Hamilton on drums, as well as a pair of fine Latin percussionists -- Willie Bobo and Victor Pantoja. The groove quotient was very high on Spellbinder, maybe even higher than on later albums such as Jazz Raga or Sorcerer. This set is all Szabo, drifting, wafting, and soaring above all that rhythm; the track selection provides ample space for Szabo's highly individualized Eastern modal style to ...
