Founding guitarist Larry Field left before this album was recorded, resulting in an emphasis on keyboardist Raul Matute and sax player Danny Hull. The result is, surprisingly, somewhat tighter playing by the band, with the horn section reined in to provide percussive punches on guitar- and keyboard-driven songs. The Escovedos drop in to provide Latin percussion on such funk monsters as "Down to the Bone," and the band sounds both confident and aggressive in the tightly wound rave-up of "All My Honey." The album takes an unusual turn toward soulfully bittersweet blues on "You Had to Know"; while the song takes entirely too long to resolve, it's still an admirable showcase for Lydia Pense's bruised vocals. Trumpeter Max Haskett also steps in to provide vocals on a couple tracks, but they're an unavoidable letdown after the explosive power of Pense's singing. ~ Paul Collins

Cold Blood First Taste Of Sin Songs First Taste Of Sin Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) The spirit of 70s block parties What more can you say about Cold Blood? The albums "First Taste of Sin" and "Thriller" so captured an era of time. The early 70s. Block parties, the beach, crumb comics. Aaahh, when life was good. These two albums were such a great part of that time. Now on CDs. FAAANTASTIC! I only wish there was more recorded Live material from the Vintage Blood session. Not enough stars One word - Lydia. Smokin' hot looks and smokin' hot voice! Think Tower of Power with a female vocalist. Funk, R&B, soul - you name it. Great performances, great charts, outstanding grooves and production. Get "Down to the Bone" and put this record in your must-have collection! Thank goodness for re-releases I have this on LP & it's been played so often it's full of scratches. Cold Blood is one of the best bands you'll ever hear. If you like soul/funk/r&b/blues with a little jazz to boot...Buy It. Submitted by a reviewer (New Providence, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

First Taste Of Sin album
$12.95 A straight, no-frills-or-bonus-tracks reissue of Cold Blood's first two albums from 1969 and 1971 on one CD, these 13 tracks make a case for the band as one of the better "lost" groups of the late-'60s San Francisco scene. Gutsy-voiced singer Lydia Pense had her Janis Joplin schtick down-pat, and even though the group was fraught with the usual revolving door personnel that a nine-piece is bound to experience, these two albums find them young, hungry, and relatively unscathed by the business dealings that ultimately did them in. Their debut (tracks one through seven) is predominantly comprised of sassy blues and R&B covers injected with their personal groove, while tracks eight through 13 from Sisyphus ply their originals, except for a scorching cover of the Hayes/Porter classic "Your Good Thing" with the young Pointer Sisters on backing vocals. The 2001 remastering is adequate, but the sound, especially on the drums, is a little tinny and compressed. As a combination of Tower of Power's funky horn attack, Big Brother's shambling garage approach, ...
| | Cold Blood Vintage Blood: Live! 1973 CD (2001)
First Taste Of Sin CD music
$14.69 Cold Blood was on the verge of a musical breakthrough during the early '70s, but the band's inability to write compelling original material or expand their range beyond high-octane, horn-dominated R&B relegated them to second-tier status. The band was at their best on-stage, but curiously never released a live album until this release 30 years past their heyday. Vintage Blood Live! 1973 catches the band at their funkified norm. Recorded at a studio before a small but appreciative audience, this performance emphasizes the groove. Cold Blood hits it quickly and stays there for long stretches, submerging beneath Lydia Pense's powerful R&B voice. Pense, keyboard player Raul Matute, and bassist Rod Ellicott ...
| | Cold Blood Lydia CD (1974)
First Taste Of Sin music CDs
$9.85 Even legendary Stax guitarist Steve Cropper couldn't save this album. Cropper produced it and played on three cuts, but his soulful approach and the band's determination to play blue-eyed funk just don't mesh. The horn section sounds ready to break out into "I Can't Turn You Loose" throughout the Cropper-penned "Consideration," an interesting glimpse into what might have been had Cold Blood chosen a different road. Singer Lydia Pense is in fine form as always. ~ Mark Allan

| | Cold Blood Thriller! CD (1973)
First Taste Of Sin songs
$9.69 Thriller! -- Cold Blood's fourth LP -- is a continuation on the brass-intensive funky R&B that drove their previous efforts. In contrast to those discs, however, there is very little in the way of original material here, the singular exception being Max Haskett's rollicking "Live Your Dream," which features the Pointer Sisters on backing vocals. This was not the first collaborative effort between the two either, as the vocal trio had also made a few notable contributions to the Sisyphus album. One of the primary distinctions between Cold Blood and their Bay Area contemporaries the Tower of Power is lead vocalist Lydia Pense. She has developed from simply belting out the blues -- à la Janis Joplin -- to becoming an increasingly sensitive lyrical interpreter without diminishing her prowess or guttural growl. One prime example is her ease and agility on the cover of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the ...
| | Witchcraft Firewood CD (2005)
First Taste Of Sin album
$13.55 Ask a group of doom metal or stoner rock enthusiasts what band was the blueprint for the doom/stoner field, and the vast majority will -- without hesitation -- say Black Sabbath. So when a band is as Sabbath-influenced as Witchcraft, it is understandable that some headbangers would describe them as a doom band. But Witchcraft isn't nearly as forceful or as heavy as Eyehategod, Orange Goblin, or Toadliquor, and Firewood isn't typical of what has been considered doom metal and stoner rock in the '90s and 2000 -- actually, this 2005 release shows no awareness of post-'80s metal or even post-'70s metal. Rather, Firewood is a total throwback to the heavy metal, hard rock, and psychedelic rock of the late '60s and very early '70s. Black Sabbath's first few albums with Ozzy Osbourne are a strong influence, and the Swedish band's other inspirations include Jethro Tull, Cream, Uriah Heep, ...
