The Souther, Hillman, Furay Band was one of those supergroup creations of the 70's. Chris Hillman was an original member of The Byrds, Richie Furay was one of the founders of Poco and J.D. Souther worked with Glen Frey of the Eagles. In 1974 they formed this unique group and recorded two albums. Trouble In Paradise rose to # 39 and is making its worldwide CD debut. Wounded Bird Records. 2002.

Souther, Hillman, Furay Band: J.D. Souther (vocals, guitar, bass, drums); Chris Hillman (guitar, mandolin, bass, background vocals); Richie Furay (guitar, background vocals); Al Perkins (guitar, pedal steel guitar, dobro); Paul Harris (flute, keyboards); Ron "Crunchy" Grinel (drums); Joe Lala (percussion).
With producer Tom Dowd, known for his work at Atlantic Records, at the helm, the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band seemed to be distancing itself a bit from its country-rock roots with its second release, the appropriately titled Trouble in Paradise. Here the band expands on the funkier aspects of its debut album, while at the same time slipping even closer to the middle of the road. On that record it was former Poco frontman Richie Furay who was responsible for the highlights, but this time out it's J.D. Souther, who penned four of the LP's nine tracks, who leads the way, with "Prisoner in Disguise" (recorded that same year by Linda Ronstadt) and the title cut the standouts. Still, Furay, whose two compositions were dominated by his recent conversion to Christianity, does connect with the lovely "For Someone I Love," which interestingly enough precedes the sleazy rationalizations of Souther's "Mexico." As was the case with the previous album, Chris Hillman's trio of selections, including "Love and Satisfy," which borrows the lyrics for the majority of its first two verses from his and Gram Parsons' "Train Song," are moderately successful, if in the long run somewhat forgettable. Before the recording of the album, original drummer Jim Gordon had left and was replaced by Ron Grinel (Souther also played drums on a couple of tracks), and what must have seemed like a great idea in 1973 was showing signs of unraveling. The band was finished by 1976 following Trouble in Paradise's poor showing, with each of its primary members recording solo records for Asylum within the year. Originally released by Asylum Records in 1975 and reissued on CD in 2002 by Wounded Bird. ~ Brett Hartenbach

3 stars It Really was "Trouble in Paradise"
Let me clear this out of the way first. Normally I would give almost anything Chris Hillman has played on four-five stars or better, but this second S-H-F band gets an average rating through no fault of Chris. Check out the cover of the album. J.D. Souther stares towards the ground, deep in thought(??), Richie Furay has his hands in his pockets, shrugging - and Chris has a no-nonsense stance, as if he was fed up with the proceedings. There was indeed "Trouble in Paradise". Why??? Simply because the S-H-F Band were three extremely talented musicians thrown together by Davey Geffen to get back at CSN and the Eagles. If Souther, Hillman and Furay had had time to coalesce, to jell, write songs together, be a band they would have knocked the Eagles on their asses. The first album showed great promise. But the fly in the ointment was ironically the one guy closest to Henley, Frey and Jackson Browne in this band - namely the "Heartbreaker" J.D. Souther. Souther did not want to be in a group, did not want to be a team player. And S-H-F fell apart at the seams. The title track is okay, although the solo version J.D. did four years later with Frey and Henley's harmonies where Furay and Hillman were is much stronger...the redeeming factors are the jazzy keyboards of Paul Harris. Souther is also okay and just that on "Mexico" the mediocre single that was the band's swan song. It is clearly obvious Souther preferred to fly solo. The guy is a gifted songwriter, but not much else - and his lacklustre performance on this record is sorry proof. A much more powerful and energetic singer now than he was then, Hillman nonetheless does a good job on "Love and Satisfy" and "Move Me Real Slow" with more than ample support from Harris and from Al Perkins on Guitar. Furay's two efforts are satisfying but nothing like "Falling in Love" or "Believe Me" (a song he originally recorded for Poco) off the first album. "Falling in Love" was Furay's apogee, he never came close to it on "Trouble"... A good choice to round out a Furay or Hillman collection, but nothing out of the ordinary, I'm afraid, especially with a group about to call it quits.

3 stars The SHF Band is great
Altough the first record of The SHF Band is better than this, it is good record with beautiful ballads, especially from Hillman. These three guys are great musicians and deserve the reputation they have. I recommend it.

Though recorded by what was technically a Christian rock group, the Richie Furay band's Dance a Little Light is a far cry from the heavy-handed, musically inept evangelizing often associated with the genre. Despite his then-recent born-again status, Furay was still the same guy who played a pivotal role in two of the most important and influential country-rock bands of all ...
