| | Ray Goodman Intimate Moments CD (2002)
Love Potion
$15.95 The "sweet" soul trio of Harry Ray, Al Goodman, and Billy Brown scored several hits for All Platinum/Stang Records in the early '70s as the Moments before they became Ray, Goodman & Brown in 1978. They moved to Polygram, where their poignant ballad "Special Lady" topped the R&B charts in 1979 and reached number five pop. They remained on Polydor until 1981, getting one more Top 20 hit with "Inside of You" in 1980. They moved to Panoramic, then on to EMI, where they got their last Top Ten single in 1986, "Take It to the Limit." Their latest release is "Intimate Moments" which is released on their own label in assoication with Orpheus Music.
| | Nerve Agents Days Of The White Owl CD (2000)
Love Potion
$11.95 16 track debut from the Nerve Agents combines their punk andhardcore influences such as Youth Of Today, Black Flag, and Circle Jerks with 7 Seconds, the Cro-Mags and Cause For Alarm, to form a sound all their own. 2000 release. Standard jewelcase.
The Nerve Agents: Eric "Sheric D." Ozenne (vocals); Zac "The Butcher" Hunter, Timmy Stardust (guitar, background vocals); Dante (piano, bass, background vocals); Andy Outbreak (drums). Additional personnel includes: Dixie Death, Shannon Dean, Joe Fish, Michelle Wolf, Chad Welch, Andy Marks, Thadd Larue (background vocals). Producers: Andy Ernst, The Nerve Agents. Recorded at Art Of Ears Studios, Hayward, California. Personnel: Davey Havok (vocals); Timmy Stardust (guitar, background vocals); Dante Sigona (piano, background vocals); Andy "Outbreak" Granelli (drums, background vocals); R.J., Thadd LaRue, Michelle Wolf, Joe Fish, Andy Marks, Zac (background vocals). Recording information: Art Of Ears, Hayward, CA (11/2000-12/2000). Photographers: Anthony Torres; Jessica Humphrey; Thadd LaRue; Walter Yetman; Lawrence Wolfley; Anne Brown. The Nerve Agents steer clear of mainstream hardcore algorithms on Days of the White Owl, instead preferring to rely on memories of yesterday, as their breed of hardcore punk draws from such '80s cult favorites as the Misfits. Days of the White Owl focuses on short bursts of noise laced with sneering attitude that only punk manages to convey so well. As a matter of fact, the longest song contained within this 16-track album clocks in at 17 seconds short of three minutes. This brevity is not altogether uncommon when it comes to the punk genre, and the Nerve Agents do their very best within the short format of their songs. Vocalist Eric Ozenne barks out his lyrics with evident disdain toward anything and everything around him, and often sounds quite similar to Sick of It All. Guitarist Timmy Stardust rocks like it was 1985, and Dante Sigona could have easily learned how to play bass a week before they recorded this album. Unfortunately, Days of the White Owl misses its intended mark, and the Nerve Agents do not offer up much to attract new listeners. From the cheesy intro, "Spring Heeled Jack," which sounds more like a Scooby-Doo theme than anything close to spooky, to the rather outdated brand of hardcore punk they churn out, the Nerve Agents come off as more of a novelty act than a serious band. Days of the White Owl may appeal to those still locked in the '80s punk scene, but it's not much else. ~ Jason D. Taylor

| | Eloy Dawn CD (1976) Import; Remastered; Reissued
Love Potion
$10.49 This remastered version of the 1976 album features 12 tracks from the prog outfit Eloy. Before recording this album, Eloy's fifth, Frank Bornemann had to rebuild his group. With Klaus Peter Matziol (bass), Detlev Schmidtchen (keyboards), and Jürgen Rosenthal (drums), he had the lineup that would become known as the "classic" Eloy. Furthermore, this version of the band crowned him producer, giving him a wild card to do what he had in mind. Thus the transformation of the group from a blues-rock-influenced avatar of Jethro Tull (circa Benefit and Aqualung) to a symphonic progressive rock group leaning toward Dark Side of the Moon-era Pink Floyd was completed with the release of Dawn. A concept album co-written by Bornemann and Rosenthal, it tells the tale of a man who after a sudden death comes back as a ghost. He tries to pass on his newly acquired knowledge to his loved one (Jeanne, also the name of the girl in Power and the Passion). The album ends with his dissolving into light, closing on the quote, "Nous sommes du soleil" ("We are of the sun") from Yes' Tales From Topographic Oceans, released two years before. The hard rock edge featured on earlier LPs has been purged (including most of Bornemann's guitar solos) to make way for multi-layered keyboards. A string orchestra complements the group on many pieces, most notably "Glinding Into Light and Knowledge," the end of "Lost!?? (Introduction)," and the opener, "Awakening." Together with Ocean, Dawn remains one of Eloy's finest albums, at least musically. The new lineup is able to ornament and refine Bornemann's generally simple songs. As for the lyrics, it's a question of taste. ~ François Couture
Remastered reissue of the prog-rock act's fifth album, originally released in 1976. 9 tracks. EMI. 2004.

| | Soul Rebels More Jams From No More Parades CD (1999)
Love Potion
$11.49 Audio Remixers: Dave Reynolds; Jimmy Augustin. Well, there must be an original CD called "No More Parades" out there since this is a collection of alternate remixes and five previously unreleased tracks by the most lauded New Orleans brass band since Rebirth, with no musician credits. While the Soul Rebels seem intent on offering a serious music and message alternative to the jump up energy of its predecessors, the band unfortunately loses some of the frenzied flavor that can make the genre so exciting. The almost timbales rhythm feel kicking off "Roy's Har-groove" is the first signal they're aiming beyond mere street parade celebration. The tune by the jazz trumpeter puts more emphasis on the harmonic blend in the horns; a trait that continues on "We Be Rollin'," a hip-hop-ish call to arms with an Afrocentric base. The Soul Rebels mostly eschew rhythm & riff power for trumpet/trombone dominance, a tuba providing foundation, and a few jumps to upper-register blurts. The sax is generally discreet -- no deadly Dirty Dozen Brass Band tandem riff machines here -- and the cymbals generally aim for jazz swing more than brass band crash. But the music is too sporadic and rarely takes off. "Skin" boasts an interesting arrangement, with solos working off a groove spine and backing punctuations that could have gone on longer. "Drive" is a good solid track, and "Moment With The Rebel" is marked by moody horns. "Rebel Rock" gets a fair amount of funky undertow mojo working but the rap vocals don't do much, and "Shut Up Po'" hints at the DDBB's "Blackbird Special" but settles for contrapuntal comments rather than going for it. It's a big problem with Soul Rebels -- that reluctance to break away from measured tempos. They do go breakneck on "I'm Worse," with the drums racing up a chop-funk storm underneath a sax solo and nice ensemble arrangement -- it's the best piece here -- and the shortest. "We Be Rollin' (Version 2)" gets a strong go-go-meets-brass band groove going with rap-style shout-outs for the band. But why wait so long to up the energy ante? That refusal to cut loose until the end works against the group's other strong points. If they had, maybe you'd walk away from More Jams From No More Parades thinking "Man, that's really good" instead of "Yeah, it's okay." ~ Don Snowden
