Sweden has produced yet another melodic heavy metal band rooted in classic '80s influences. Dream Evil (taking its name from the Dio album of the same name?) plays the type of soaring, melodramatic heavy metal that combines the progressive metal chops of Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force with the accessibility of pop-metallers Europe. As for the lyrics, a scan of the song titles tells all; tunes like "The Prophecy," "The Chosen One," and "Heavy Metal in the Night" certainly don't address any new or compelling subject matter, but instead wallow in an adolescent, Dungeons & Dragons fantasy land. Which is probably a moot point -- old-school metal fans will come for the pristine musicianship, and will likely not be disappointed. ~ Andy Hinds

 Good power metal
Given all the hype I'd heard, I expected the best music I'd ever heard (nothing can live up to that). Not the best I've ever heard, but a very good CD. Only listened to it twice so far, it keeps getting better.

Renaissance Style Power
This CD combines the strength of traditional power metal with the concepts of the style of the dragon-fighting era. I will not however put them in the class with such bands as Blind Guardian or Manowar yet.

Was This Review Helpful? Yes No Fantastic Heavy Metal Release Featuring A Guitar Monster
I was looking forward to this album for a long time and wasn't disappointed! Gus G. is a monster on the guitar with all the speed and guitar skills of a Yngwie Malmsteen or Chris Impellitteri. Niklas Isfeldt has the perfect voice for the band, not too aggressive and fits the music very nicely. The outstanding songs are "In Flames You Burn" and my favorite "The Prophecy." The only problem I had with this album is the length of about 46 minutes. After I was finished listening to the CD I wanted more (check out 'Firewind' or 'Mystic Prophecy’ the other albums with Gus G. on guitars). This is what Heavy Metal is supposed to be all about and one of the best albums of 2002, but unfortunately it won't be a hit here in the joke of a music scene that is the USA. If you're a fan of 'Stratovarius’ or 'Symphony X' don't miss this one!

Yes it is a good album, just like that. Those albums that you can enjoy, but you do not miss of anything if you pass of it. IMO a band full of cliches and cheesy attitude, maybe it is just that I dont like that childish vibe of Dungeons, Dragons and Knights

Hammerfall's grandiose heavy metal posturing only narrowly avoids the type of self-parody exhibited by Manowar (for that matter, the bandmembers' outfits are only slightly less ridiculous than Manowar's swords-and-loincloths look). But fans of the genre probably won't care -- the band performs its soaring power metal anthems with spirit, dedication, and heroic execution on Crimson Thunder. Evilized is a shameless record, celebrating sacred heavy metal conventions with both passion and a touch of parody. Dream Evil still plays '80s-style power metal with plenty of soaring choruses and fancy fretwork, but they've dropped the Dungeons & Dragons lyrics in favor of songs about the genre itself. The use of lyrical clichés is inspired and witty in this context; singer Niklas Isfeldt's macho boasts of being "so f*cking metal" are self-consciously hilarious yet genuine enough to avoid condescension.
